GARDEN
Open year round
The final phase of Cooper Hewitt’s incredible renovation and expansion is the transformation of the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden—a rare gem of open green space in Manhattan.
Hood Design Studio, in collaboration with Raft Landscape Architects, evolved the original Richard Schermerhorn, Jr. garden design from 1901. The redesign is inspired by local geology and plantings in Central Park and features new terrace pavers, enlarged garden pathways, colorful plantings and a re-imagined rock garden (rockery). The design honors the historic nature of the garden, while providing an improved landscape experience for all.
The garden is open to the public free of charge, starting at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday—two hours before the museum opens.
