2. How TCP/IP Works
IP Addresses -- Every device on a TCP/IP network needs an individual IP Address
DNS (Domain Name Service/Server) resolves Domain names into IP Addreses
DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protcol) Servers automatically assign IP information to clients for a specific time period (Lease). Clients try to renew leases at 50% expiration point.
Default Gateway (Router) connects networks. If an IP Address cannot be found on the local network the computer tries to use the Default Gateway to find the target.
Subnets and Subnet Masking -- Subnets are individual networks. Subnet Masks divide IP Addresses in Subnet Number and Host Number
What the Number Mean
IP Addresses and Subnet Masks are made of 4 Octets of Bits

Subnet Masking
IP Addresses contain the Subnet Number and Host Number. The Subnet Mask tells you where the subnet number ends and the host number begins.

The Highest Address in a Subnet Range is the Broadcast address
To determine the number of subnets (n is the number of bits used)= 2n

This video explains what IP addressing is and why it is used.
For computers to communicate with each other through a network it is necessary to be able to identify specific computers over a network.
An example of an IP address is 195.195.92.161 this translates to 11000011.11000011.01011100.10100001 in binary.
These numbers may look complicated but when explained they are very simple
The use of IP addressing is no different to the use of a phone number.
Phone numbers are used as a way of communicating with specific people. Phone numbers use both and area code and identifier.
Ip addressing uses a similar method of identification. It uses a network number and an identifier number.
For example if we have 3 separate networks all with 5 computers. There would be 3 network different network address's .
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1 etc...
IP addresses are in total 32 bits long.
11000011110000110101110010100001
Each string of 32 bits is then split into 4 equal parts of 8 bits
11000011.11000011.01011100.10100001
These four strings of 8 bits are then converted into decimal numbers for ease of human use.
195.195.92.161
This IP address would then be split up into two parts, one is used to identify the network and one is then used to identify a computer hosted on that network.
The part of the IP address used to identify varies depending on the CLASS.
There are 5 classes of IP address, A,B,C,D and E.
A, B, and C are used for assigning IP addresses
Classes D and E are reserved for special use.
D is used for multicasting
E is reserved for experimentation
A, B and C are the we'll be looking at.
Now the difference between these three types of IP address is how it is split between network and host.
Class A addresses use the first part of the IP address only when identifying a network.

X = Network part
Z= Host part
In the network part of a class A address the leading bit is a 0 allowing the last 7 bits to be used as network identifiers. This allows Class A to have 2^7 networks (128)
There are 24 bits left in the host part of a class A IP address allowing them to be used to identify hosts within a network. This means each network on this system could have 2^24 hosts (16,777,216)
Class B addresses use the first part of the IP address only when identifying a network.

In the network part of a class A address the leading bits are 10 allowing the last 14 bits to be used as network identifiers. This allows Class A to have 2^14 networks (16,384)
There are 16 bits left in the host part of a class A IP address allowing them to be used to identify hosts within a network. This means each network on this system could have 2^16 hosts (65,536)
Class C addresses use the first part of the IP address only when identifying a network.

IP address
An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two principal functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. Its role has been characterized as follows: "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there."
The designers of the Internet Protocol defined an IP address as a 32-bit number and this system, known as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), is still in use today. However, because of the growth of the Internet and the predicted depletion of available addresses, a new version of IP (IPv6), using 128 bits for the address, was developed in 1995. IPv6 was standardized as RFC 2460 in 1998, and its deployment has been ongoing since the mid-2000s.
IP addresses are usually written and displayed in human-readable notations, such as 172.16.254.1 (IPv4), and 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1 (IPv6).

Internet protocol suite
The Internet protocol suite is the computer networking model and set of communications protocols used on the Internet and similar computer networks. It is commonly known as TCP/IP, because its most important protocols, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP) were the first networking protocols defined in this standard. It is occasionally known as the DoD model, because the development of the networking model was funded by DARPA, an agency of the United States Department of Defense.
TCP/IP provides end-to-end connectivity specifying how data should be packetized, addressed, transmitted, routed and received at the destination. This functionality is organized into four abstraction layers which are used to sort all related protocols according to the scope of networking involved. From lowest to highest, the layers are the link layer, containing communication methods for data that remains within a single network segment (link); the internet layer, connecting independent networks, thus establishing internetworking; the transport layer handling host-to-host communication; and the application layer, which provides process-to-process data exchange for applications.

White hat (computer security)
The term "white hat" in Internet slang refers to an ethical computer hacker, or a computer security expert, who specializes in penetration testing and in other testing methodologies to ensure the security of an organization's information systems.Ethical hacking is a term coined by IBM meant to imply a broader category than just penetration testing. White-hat hackers may also work in teams called "sneakers",red teams, or tiger teams.
History
One of the first instances of an ethical hack being used was a "security evaluation" conducted by the United States Air Force of the Multics operating systems for "potential use as a two-level (secret/top secret) system." Their evaluation found that while Multics was "significantly better than other conventional systems," it also had "... vulnerabilities in hardware security, software security and procedural security" that could be uncovered with "a relatively low level of effort." The authors performed their tests under a guideline of realism, so that their results would accurately represent the kinds of access that an intruder could potentially achieve. They performed tests that were simple information-gathering exercises, as well as other tests that were outright attacks upon the system that might damage its integrity. Clearly, their audience wanted to know both results. There are several other now unclassified reports that describe ethical hacking activities within the U.S. military.

The software allows for the creation of spatial interfaces, where interaction is based on the relative movement of 3D content, and the resulting geometric events (e.g. intersection, relative distance and incidence) which occur. The software allows for the creation of spatial interfaces, where interaction is based on the relative movement of 3D content, and the resulting geometric events (e.g. intersection, relative distance and incidence) which occur. A user is represented in the interaction scene by an avatar, which is controlled via standard input devices (eg, keyboard, mouse, joystick, Wii controllers, etc) or via realtime tracking systems. Thus, a user's (avatar) movement in the scene relative to other content will generate geometric events. These events, can be mapped on to actions, which are in turn, sent to systems to control sound, lighting, graphics or other.
In a typical application for live performance, a motion-tracked performer will interact with an overlaid virtual 3D interaction scene that corresponds to the exact dimensions of the performance space. As the performer moves about the stage, his/her avatar encounters the various geometric content defined in the scene, and various actions are triggered; his/her use of a wireless controller adds the modality of "clicking", thus offering a wider range possible event-to-action mappings.
The system operates in a distributed fashion over IP networks, supporting applications that can be shared between multiple users in different locations.

For computers to communicate with each other through a network it is necessary to be able to identify specific computers over a network.
An example of an IP address is 195.195.92.161 this translates to 11000011.11000011.01011100.10100001 in binary.

For example if we have 3 separate networks all with 5 computers. There would be 3 network different network address's .
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1 etc...
IP addresses are in total 32 bits long.
11000011110000110101110010100001
Each string of 32 bits is then split into 4 equal parts of 8 bits
11000011.11000011.01011100.10100001
These four strings of 8 bits are then converted into decimal numbers for ease of human use.

This IP address would then be split up into two parts, one is used to identify the network and one is then used to identify a computer hosted on that network.
The part of the IP address used to identify varies depending on the CLASS.

The software allows for the creation of spatial interfaces, where interaction is based on the relative movement of 3D content, and the resulting geometric events (e.g. intersection, relative distance and incidence) which occur. A user is represented in the interaction scene by an avatar, which is controlled via standard input devices (eg, keyboard, mouse, joystick, Wii controllers, etc) or via realtime tracking systems. Thus, a user's (avatar) movement in the scene relative to other content will generate geometric events. These events, can be mapped on to actions, which are in turn, sent to systems to control sound, lighting, graphics or other.
In a typical application for live performance, a motion-tracked performer will interact with an overlaid virtual 3D interaction scene that corresponds to the exact dimensions of the performance space. As the performer moves about the stage, his/her avatar encounters the various geometric content defined in the scene, and various actions are triggered; his/her use of a wireless controller adds the modality of "clicking", thus offering a wider range possible event-to-action mappings.
The system operates in a distributed fashion over IP networks, supporting applications that can be shared between multiple users in different locations.
