Sakina Jaffrey

Sakina Jaffrey (born February 14, 1962) is an American actress.

Early life

Jaffrey was born in Manhattan, New York, the youngest daughter of actress, food and travel writer Madhur Jaffrey and actor Saeed Jaffrey. Her parents divorced when she was three years old, and she grew up estranged from her father who subsequently moved to the United Kingdom. She graduated from Vassar College in 1984. She studied Mandarin Chinese at the college, originally planning to be a translator before she became an actress.

Career

Jaffrey appeared with her father in the film Masala (1991) and with her mother in The Perfect Murder (1988). In 2002 she appeared in The Truth About Charlie starring Mark Wahlberg. With her son Cassius Wilkinson and daughter Jamila Wilkinson, she appeared in Raising Helen (2004) and in The Ode (2008).

She stars as Linda Vasquez, the White House Chief of Staff, in the Netflix series House of Cards (2013). In 2014, it was announced that she would be appearing in the second season of Fox's television series Sleepy Hollow as Leena Reyes, the new sheriff.

Saeed Jaffrey

Saeed Jaffrey, OBE (Punjabi: ਸਈਦ ਜਾਫ਼ਰੀ, Urdu: سعید جعفری; Hindi: सईद जाफ़री; 8 January 1929 – 15 November 2015) was an Indian-born British actor whose versatility and fluency in multiple languages allowed him to straddle radio, stage, television and film in a career that spanned over six decades and more than a hundred and fifty British, American and Indian movies.

He was able to breathe life into the smallest of roles through intense preparation and a nuanced performance, like that of the translator and guide Billy Fish in The Man Who Would Be King (1975), an act that brought him international attention. His seductive, resonant voice combined with a gift for mimicry and a sharp ear for accents made him the natural choice as narrator for audio books. His narration of the Kama Sutra titled The Art of Love (1996) was listed by Time magazine as "one of the five best spoken word records ever made". He voiced all 86 characters in the 1997 BBC World Service broadcast of Vikram Seth's novel, A Suitable Boy.

Andra and The BackBone

Andra and The BackBone is a rock band from Indonesia and the solo project of Andra Ramadhan, guitarist of the band Dewa 19. Ramadhan also formed part of fellow Dewa band member Ahmad Dhani's Ahmad Band project.

In addition to Ramadhan, the band also consists of Deddi Suryadi, Stevie Item.

The band released its self-titled debut album in 2007 on EMI Indonesia. The album was also released in Malaysia but with different artwork.

The album's first single, "Musnah", became a big hit in Indonesia, reaching the top of many national radio playlists. The video clip also received heavy rotation on MTV.

School alumni include Anne Hathaway, Tony Hale, and Poorna Jagannathan.

Sakina Jaffrey currently stars as White House chief of staff, Linda Vasquez in the Netflix original series House Of Cards directed and produced by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. House Of Cards, a gripping drama of Washington politics at its most Machiavellian, continues shooting through late 2013. Previous television credits include recurring roles as Dr. Hickman, chief emergency room doctor on NBC's Third Watch, and Mrs. Chandra Suresh on NBC's Heroes. Guest star appearances have included Sex And The City, Law And Order and Suv. Most recently, Sakina played Aasif Mandvi's wife, Beth Qu'osby, on The Daily Show's Muslim sitcom, The Qu'osby Show, and Lena Dunham's gynecologist on the HBO hit GIRLS. In film, Sakina played Nilma, Kate Hudson's bat-wielding neighbour in Garry Marshall's Raising Helen. A performance Roger Friedman called a "comic delight", Roger Ebert said "channels Ethel Mertz", and The Boston Globe's Ty Burr simply said: "I'd like to see a movie about Nilma." Other films include Jonathan Demme's The Truth About Charlie and The Manchurian Candidate; Sidney Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead; Shari Berman's The Nanny Diaries; and Frank Oz's The Indian In The Cupboard. Sakina has long been a favourite of independent film, shooting more than two dozen films on four continents.
