To believers, Nepal's child goddesses or Kumaris can bestow luck with a glance. But when these children grow up, returning to normal life is virtually impossible.
Girls selected as Kumaris must be aged between two and four and satisfy all the conditions of '32 perfections'. For a few short years, "all Nepalese people worship them" states one woman. But as soon as they experience their first menstruation, they lose their goddess status.

In this film, producer Maryam Violet examines the traditions surrounding the Kumari - or, virgin goddess - in Nepali culture. Unlike most other Hindu gods and goddesses, the Kumari is a living goddess, a pre-pubescent girl worshipped as an embodiment of female divinity and thus restricted to a lifestyle fitting for a goddess: she is not allowed to walk on the ground, nor is she permitted to leave the Kumari Ghar, the house in which she resides attended by priests, except for thirteen days out of the year. As soon as the girl has her first period, something considered “impure” in Hindu culture, she is no longer considered divine and a new Kumari is selected.
This film also explores how Kumari worship and the elevation pre-pubescent purity is directly related to the sometimes harmful restrictions placed on menstruating women in Hindu culture, a problem NGOs are working to address today.

In this film, producer Maryam Violet examines the traditions surrounding the Kumari - or, virgin goddess - in Nepali culture. Unlike most other Hindu gods and goddesses, the Kumari is a living goddess, a pre-pubescent girl worshipped as an embodiment of female divinity and thus restricted to a lifestyle fitting for a goddess: she is not allowed to walk on the ground, nor is she permitted to leave the Kumari Ghar, the house in which she resides attended by priests, except for thirteen days out of the year. As soon as the girl has her first period, something considered “impure” in Hindu culture, she is no longer considered divine and a new Kumari is selected.
