Cory Bernardi tried to celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary by trolling LGBT people and failed miserably

Poor Cory Bernardi. The conservative, anti-marriage equality Senator just marked his 20th wedding anniversary all alone and far from home, in New York where he's flying the flag at the United Nations for what he's described as "common sense".

Clearly feeling a little sorry for himself, Bernardi turned to Twitter to cheer himself up the only way he knows how: By trolling LGBT people who are fighting for the right to celebrate any wedding anniversary at all.

Dialling up the sarcasm, Bernardi tweeted: "I know the joy it will bring the twittersphere that today is my 20th wedding anniversary.

"I can't wait to read your messages," he added, in case his followers didn't immediately recognise the tweet as bait.

They saw the bait, but nobody took it.

Instead, people responded with the kind of civility that the anti-SSM crowd has already flung out the window in their campaigning on the plebiscite.

Some even had some kind suggestions for how Senator Bernardi might pass the time, once they knew he was spending his anniversary without his wife in New York.

Hint: log off Twitter, Cory.
