Salem station (Oregon)

Salem is an Amtrak train station in Salem, Oregon, United States. It is served by the Amtrak Cascades and the Coast Starlight passenger trains.

History

This station was constructed for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1918 and is the third station to be built at this location. The two previous stations were built in 1871 and 1889. The 1871 depot burned down in 1885. The Queen Anne-style 1889 depot burned down on March 5, 1917.

The current Beaux-Arts-style structure was constructed of masonry and is one of five masonry depots that still exist along the original Southern Pacific West Coast line. The other depots are in Albany, Medford, Roseburg and Eugene.

A restoration project by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was completed in 2000. Amtrak leases the station from ODOT for $1 a year, in exchange for maintenance of the building and grounds.

An 1889 Railway Express Agency (REA) freight depot/baggage shed survived the fire that destroyed the previous station and is the oldest freight depot still in existence in the state. After the 1917 fire, the Queen Anne-style REA depot was relocated from its original site to south of the passenger station. The REA depot has not been used since the mid-1970s, and now awaits restoration.

Salem (cigarette)

Salem is a brand of cigarettes introduced in 1956 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as the first filter-tipped menthol cigarette. Its name (along with that of the Winston brand) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered. Salem cigarettes are unique in that they are blended with Asian Menthol rather than the traditional mainstream Menthol. It is currently a product of ITG Brands LLC, a subsidiary of Imperial Tobacco Company. In the 1983 prison movie Bad Boys , both Salem and Winston cigarettes are seen being offered to and purchased by Sean Penn's character.

Sponsorship

Until the early 2000s, Salem was a sponsor of the Hong Kong Open, an ATP tennis tournament, which attracted a number of top ranking professional players. As a result of the sponsorship, it was titled the Salem Open. Salem also sponsored a number of events there including concerts throughout Asia.

In 2001, as with legislation restricting tobacco sponsorship in Hong Kong, the tournament sponsorship was proven to be controversial, when its official logo was altered to include the logo of Perrier, causing anti-smoking campaigners to claim that the organisers exploited a loophole in its sponsorship clause.

Salem (MBTA station)

Salem is a passenger rail station on MBTA Commuter Rail's Newburyport/Rockport Line located at 252 Bridge Street near the intersection of Massachusetts Route 107 and Route 114 in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem station consists of one platform which serves a single track. A staircase provides access to the platform from Route 107. Immediately south of Salem, the train tracks enter the Salem Tunnel, which carries trains underneath Washington Street in Salem. A $44.5 million garage with 715 spaces, along with a full-length high-level platform for speedier boarding, opened on October 24, 2014.

During an April 2013 passenger count, Salem averaged 2,122 inbound weekday boardings, making it the second-busiest station (after Providence) on the system except for the three downtown Boston terminals.

History

The Salem station was originally in what is now Riley Plaza, just south of the downtown businesses along Washington Street. The first structure, built in 1838, was a wooden structure with a train shed. It was replaced in 1847 with a medieval-style structure with two towers and a large granite archway through which trains would pass. Despite damage remaining from an 1882 fire, it had become a local landmark by the time it was demolished in 1954.

Phoebe (bird)

The genus Sayornis is a small group of medium-sized insect-eating birds, known as Phoebes, in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae; they are native to North and South America.

They prefer semi-open or open areas. These birds wait on a perch and then catch insects. Their nest is an open cup sometimes placed on man-made structures.

They often slowly lower and raise their tails while perched.

The Magic School Bus

The Magic School Bus is an edutainment multimedia franchise that consists of a book series, a TV series, and several video games among other things. Each of the stories within the franchise centers on the antics of a fictional elementary school teacher, Ms. Valerie Frizzle, and her class, who board an anthropomorphic Type A school bus, which takes them on field trips to impossible locations, such as the solar system, clouds, the past, and the human body. The class pet Liz, a lizard, accompanies the class on their field trips.

History

The first media in which this franchise was developed was the Magic School Bus book series. Craig Walker, vice-president and senior editorial director at Scholastic Co., stated that the concept began with the idea of combining science with fictional stories, and Joanna Cole (who had written both science and humor before) and Bruce Degen were then approached with creating such a series. Walker also states that his own memories of school field trips and of a teacher he had once, served as further inspiration. The first book "At the Waterworks" was written in 1985 and published the following year. The books are written in the first person from the point of view of an unnamed student in "the Friz's" class. Cole and Degen started a new series called Ms. Frizzle's Adventures in 2001, which teaches social studies, eventually producing three books in that series. Microsoft Home started publishing Magic School Bus software in 1994.

Phoebe (magazine)

Phoebe: A Journal of Literature and Art is a literary journal based at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and first published in 1971. It publishes one print issue and one online issue each year in addition to running annual contests in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The journal has served as a space for up-and-coming writers, whose style, form, voice, and subject matter demonstrate a vigorous appeal to the senses, intellect, and emotions of readers. According to the Phoebe constitution, "We insist on openness, which means we welcome both experimental and conventional prose and poetry, and we insist on being entertained, which means the work must capture and hold our attention, whether it be the potent language of a poem or the narrative mechanics of a short story."
