Valentine Wilmot's London nightclub and restaurant, Piccadilly Circus, is a great success due to his star attraction, dancing partners Mabel (Gilda Gray) and Vic (Cyril Ritchard). One night, a dissatisfied diner (Charles Laughton) disrupts Mabel's solo with his loud complaint about a dirty plate. When Wilmot investigates, he finds Shosho (Anna May Wong) distracting the other dishwashers with her dancing. He fires her on the spot.
After the performance, Vic tries to persuade Mabel to become his partner offstage as well as on, and to go to Hollywood with him. She coldly rebuffs him, as she is romantically involved with Wilmot. That night, Wilmot summons Vic to his office. Before Wilmot can fire him, Vic quits.

With its stunning production design and photography, 'Piccadilly' depicts London through an otherworldly cocktail of influences, blending the debauchery of the rich West End set with the sleazy excitement of a Limehouse dive bar and the city's smoky Chinese quarter. German émigré E.A. Dupont, who brought an international flair to late-'20s British cinema, also tackles the then risqué subject of inter-racial sex. As Shosho, who works her way from kitchen hand to star attraction at the eponymous nightclub, via a love tryst with its (attached) owner, Chinese-American star Anna May Wong represents the ultimate, and ultimately doomed, Deco diva. This silent movie, made in 1928 and released early the following year, marked Charles Laughton's official film debut. He played an inebriated diner complaining about a dirty plate in a lavish night-club cabaret scene. It was one day's work for Laughton who, over the previous couple of years, had taken the London stage by storm. As soon as he'd graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1926 he played a series of parts that had West End audiences and critics enthralled. These in turn led to appearances on the Broadway stage, offers from Hollywood and a subsequent film career that is now part of movie history. This particular brief 'vignette' in "Piccadilly" was the forerunner of quite a few 'eating scenes' in Laughton movies. The most famous of these occurs in "The Private Life of...

Dishwasher Shosho, played by Anna May Wong, mesmerizes the audience with her dance routine in this scene from the 1929 silent era film Piccadilly.
Excerpt from the British silent film 'Piccadilly' (E.A. Dupont, 1929) with score by Mr. Andrew 'Octave' Oliver, formerly of Portland, Oregon, and more recently of Bounds Green. Valentine Wilmot (actor Jameson Thomas - who clearly had never seen a piano before) accompanies a fairly pathetic dance by leading lady Gilda Gray. The actress may or may not clearly be seen to mouth 'that was bollocks' at the end. Ye lipreading experts of the world, get yourselves busy.
An electrically recorded Edison Diamond Disc, a very worn copy. The Rollickers Quartet-vocal. Recorded June, 1929.
