National Forest may refer to:
Chippewa National Forest is a National Forest located in northcentral Minnesota, United States, in the counties of Itasca, Cass, and Beltrami. Forest headquarters are located in Cass Lake, Minnesota. There are local ranger district offices in Blackduck, Deer River, and Walker.
The forest covers 666,623 acres (2,697.73 km2). Water is abundant, with over 1,300 lakes (including Leech Lake), 923 miles (1,485 km) of rivers and streams, and 400,000 acres (1,600 km2) of wetlands.
The forest was established as the Minnesota Forest Reserve on June 27, 1902, with passage of the Morris Act. While this act mainly addressed the disposition of unallotted lands on Ojibwe Indian reservations in Minnesota, 200,000 acres (810 km2) of the Chippewas of the Mississippi, Cass Lake, Leech Lake, and Winnibigoshish Indian reservations were designated as a Forest Reserve.
The Reserve was re-established as the Minnesota National Forest on May 23, 1908. In 1928 the forest was renamed in honor of the Chippewa Indians from whose land the forest was created. Subsequent boundary expansions and land purchases increased the area of the forest to its present size. Today, approximately 75 percent of the forest's land is within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation.
A forest is a large area of land covered with trees or other woody vegetation. Hundreds of more precise definitions of forest are used throughout the world, incorporating factors such as tree density, tree height, land use, legal standing and ecological function. According to the widely used United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization definition, forests covered an area of four billion hectares (15 million square miles) or approximately 30 percent of the world's land area in 2006.
Forests are the dominant terrestrial ecosystem of Earth, and are distributed across the globe. Forests account for 75% of the gross primary productivity of the Earth's biosphere, and contain 80% of the Earth's plant biomass.
Forests at different latitudes form distinctly different ecozones: boreal forests near the poles tend to consist of evergreens, while tropical forests near the equator tend to be distinct from the temperate forests at mid-latitude. The amount of precipitation and the elevation of the forest also affects forest composition.

This is the Lost Forty hiking trail in the Chippewa National Forest in northern Minnesota. This was an area that was supposed to be logged but due to a survey error in the late 1800's it was missed. It is located in a remote part of the state and doesnt get many visitors. However, it's a pretty impressive sight as some of those old pines take three people to get their arms around them. I'm convinced if this was located anywhere near Duluth or the North Shore it would be the most visited site in the state! This is a quiet walk thru video with no narration and uncut. The short loop part of the trail takes just over eight minutes and thats where most of the big pines are. I would highly recommend staying longer than eight minutes. The summer of 2014 was a record breaking buggy year and a nic...
They Chippewa National Forest has a lot to offer the outdoors man.
Aurora Borealis viewed from the Chippewa National Forest north of Grand Rapids, MN on the evening of February 18, 2012. The last segment was taken on Trout Lake near Bovey, MN. I used Canon 5d Mk II, 24mm f1.4 lens, and 16-35mm f2.8 zoom lens with exposures ranging from 6 seconds to 20 seconds. The auroral event came from a coronal high speed stream with a southward-pointing magnetic field. The ensuing geomagnetic storm reached minor levels with Kp=5 at its peak, when the auroral oval was directly overhead at latitude 47 degrees N.

A solo camping experience in the Chippewa National Forest of Northern Minnesota! I cleared a site pad and survived the night in the wilderness, despite all the native animal noises, due to my presence. There's nothing like something running up on your tent at 0300 hours and then quietly leaving the area! Can't wait to go back!
In June 2013 the Forest Service denied our appeal for a new appraisal, because they said there was not" substantial and materially adverse change in a qualitative feature of the lot or immediate surroundings that would alter the appraised value of the lot or substantiate an adjustment inn base user fee." The 2000 CUFFA (Cabin User Fee Fairness Act) established in 2000 by Congress states that we can ask for and expect a new appraisal when an "act of God" has occurred on our permit lot in the national forest. Take a look at these pictures and see how the 80-100 mph windstorm has ravaged our lot taking away our shade, privacy, beauty and cool breezes. Instead, the Forest Service tripled our fees so that we are expected to pay almost $6000 a year for a severely damaged lot on Pike Bay where...

By incorporating real-world Sustainable Operations activities and a little bit of humor, the Deer River Ranger District on the Chippewa National Forest in MN shows where and how opportunities for reducing its costs and environmental footprint can have a tremendous effect if replicated on each District across the agency. Webinar hosted by Lake States Fire Science Consortium on November 20, 2014 at 2 PM EST (1 PM CST) Title: Long-term structural and compositional development of fire-origin red pine forests in north central Minnesota Speaker: Anthony D'Amato Associate Professor Department of Forest Resources University of Minnesota 1530 Cleveland Ave. North St. Paul, MN 55108 Phone: (612) 625-3733 FAX: (612) 625-5212 E-mail: damato@umn.edu Website: http://silviculture.forestry.umn.edu/ Short Abstract: The complex of outwash plains and moraines in north central Minnesota have historically supported some of the most extensive areas of jack, red, and white pine forest in the United States. The extent of these forest has been greatly reduced due in large part to past land use, including logging and asso...
Originally aired on September 16, 2014. Climate change is expected to influence forests by altering disturbance regimes, increasing tree mortality rates during droughts, expanding the range of forest pests and diseases, and changing competitive interactions. The Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) project is a science-management partnership that is establishing a large experimental trial in a red pine-dominated site on the Chippewa National Forest. The goal of the project is to monitor the long-term impacts and effectiveness of silvicultural treatments designed using an adaptive planning framework, and represents adaptation options of resistance, resilience, and transition, along with no action. The site will also serve as a demonstration area for landowners. Speaker: Linda N...
