Charles Morazé (1913-2003)
The Prize Charles and Monique Morazé has been recently established by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris, with the support of well-wishers eager to preserve their memory.
Charles Morazé (1913-2003) has been both a leading historian, one of the editors of the Annales journal, and an institution builder dedicated to social sciences. Between his study of the development of the capitalist classes (Les Bourgeois conquérants, 1957) and his last major book on the sacred sources of modern sciences (Les origines sacrées des sciences modernes, 1986) he has covered a wide spectrum of issues related to the epistemology of history; France after WWII (he has been then an adviser to General de Gaulle); the origins of underdevelopment; the history of Brazil, where he taught for two years.
At Sciences-Po, at Ecole Polytechnique (where he introduced social sciences in the curriculum), at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, then at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) he has greatly contributed to the renovation of the higher education and research in social sciences. He has also been the Director of the Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development and Head of a major UNESCO project on the history of the cultural and scientific development of the world. For decades, he has been an active Board member of the Fondation MSH.
His wife Monique Morazé (1922-2007) has been for long an active member, and then President of the Association France Union Indienne (AFUI), the oldest association dedicated to a better understanding of Independent India, established in 1956 by a mix of intellectuals and diplomats. Monique Morazé has been instrumental in helping the Fondation MSH to establish in the 1970’s its Indo-French programme of cooperation, thanks to her contacts in New Delhi. She has also published two books related to India, one on Nehru, the other on Indo-French relations.
The Chair and Prize recognize scholars working on two issues dear to the Morazé: sciences and society on the one hand, education and society on the other hand.
- Laureate 2015 : Yang Dongping
The Charles and Monique Morazé Prize, awarded by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme for the third time, was established to distinguish research activities concerning two big themes: education and society on one hand; sciences and society on the other hand.
For year 2015, the laureate is Mr Yang Dongping, professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology, China.On the occasion of the Prize ceremony, Professor Yang will give a lecture entitled: "Higher education, justice and society".
The conference will be also translated into French.

- Laureate 2014 : Mala Singh
The Charles and Monique Morazé Prize, awarded by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme for the second time, was established to distinguish research activities concerning two big themes: education and society on one hand; sciences and society on the other hand.
For year 2014, the laureate is Madam Mala Singh, professor at the Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa.
On the occasion of the Prize ceremony, Professor Mala Singh will give a lecture entitled: " Social Re-thinking Knowledge and Social Changes".

- Laureates 2013 : V. Krishna and Roland Vaast
The first laureate of the prize Charles and Monique Morazé is the journal Science, Technology and Society, launched in New Delhi in 1996 with the support of FMSH by an Indo-French team led by Professor V.V. Krishna, from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Dr. Roland Waast, from the French Institute for Research on Development, as the first truly international journal in its field devoted to the developing world and published—by Sage— in the region. Roland Waast has edited, amongst other publications, a seven volume series on Sciences outside the Western world in the XXth century. Professor Krishna is Professor in Science Policy, Centre for Studies in Science Policy, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Editor-in-Chief of Science, Technology and Society.
The first Charles and Monique Morazé Prize was received by Professor Krishna and Professor Waast on 3 December 2013, at the Maison de la Chimie, 28 rue Saint-Dominique, Paris 75007, in a year celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the Foundation MSH.
