Dead Kennedys ticked all the boxes for me. Punk greats.

Millions of Dead Cops (MDC) - More Dead Cops (1988)

Part of the West Coast Hardcore scene in the early '80s (though originally from Texas), MDC with, in my opinion, the best variation of their ever changing name. This is a compilation of their early EPs, released between 1980 -84.

Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation (1988)

I was listening to this the other night and it struck me- it's 24 years old. Maybe some people out there have never heard it. It's an absolute classic.

Thurston Moore – guitar, vocals, piano; Kim Gordon – bass guitar, vocals; Steve Shelley – drums;
Lee Ranaldo – guitar, vocals

The cover is Kerze ("Candle") by  Gerhard Richter (1983)
More about the album here.

Loan sharks...

We all know that capitalism is cannibalism.
Watching TV the other day (a daytime pop music programme on some freeview channel aimed, I'm guessing, at 16-24 year olds) I noticed that there were 'payday loans' being advertised that charged an APR of 5500%. I think the popular journalistic cliche for such rates is 'eyewatering'.

It got me thinking about how such companies, targeting low income groups and the financially insecure can be allowed to operate. The 'payday loan' industry in Britain was worth £1.9bn in 2010.
Reading a bit more about the subject of debt and loans I was astonished to read that an APR of 5500% is actually quite generous.
If you were a customer of  Santander (who made a £3 bn profit in 2010) and you happened to be £100 over your agreed overdraft limit for 28 days you would  have to repay £200.
That equates to an  APR of 819,100%.
It is, to quote Hamlet, a fucking rotten business.
Throw out the Argos catalogue.
Be free.

Orange Juice- Postcard Singles (1980-81), You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982), Texas Fever (1984), The Orange Juice (1984)

When I started Burning Aquarium almost three years ago with the idea of sharing music that I thought had been overlooked by posterity Orange Juice were one of my main inspirations.
In many ways Orange Juice drew the blueprint for the Independent music of the 80's and 90's.
These records have all been featured on Burning Aquarium before.

If you can still put up with 128kbps why not grab some sounds off YouTube? Very straightforward.

Ramones- It's Alive (1979- recorded 1977)

Here's a repost: This is for Roy (check out his excellent Rocket Remnants blog)- enjoy the music, man!
Anything on the 'old' Burning Aquarium will be reposted if you leave a request in the comments on the original post. I'll then reply with a new link within a few days.

Hey, ho, let’s go…
If a traveller from another planet ever lands here at Walker Towers and asks the question what’s this rock n roll thing I’ll play him some Ramones.

Simple simple stuff. The brilliance lies in the simplicity, the raw energy.
The minimalism of the music is matched by the purity of the imagery:
Biker jackets, torn jeans, T shirts and Chuck Taylors.
Johnny and his Mosrite guitar. Bubblegum and John Holmstrom cartoon strips…
Recorded on December 31st 1977 at The Rainbow Theatre, London.

Line up:
Joey Ramone - vocals
Johnny Ramone - guitar
Dee Dee Ramone - bass, backing vocals
Tommy Ramone - drums

Tips on downloading...

My old comrade Sau Kopp* has pointed out to me that JDownloader is a good way of  getting these downloads off Megashares. Download JDownloader (it's free, and German, hence undoubtedly reliable), and paste the URLs of the downloads (ie: the links posted on Burning Aquarium) into the Linkgrabber- results in a pretty swift download, whereas by going to the Megashares site you just get 'download slots full' messages (and of course they want you to pay for an account to avoid this). I just tried it out on the URL for one of the Ramones albums and it dowloaded (and extracted) it in about 5 mins.

Get JDownloader here: http://jdownloader.org/download/index

* not that Sau is old- I mean he's a comrade from the recent past.

Ramones (1976), Leave Home (1977), Rocket To Russia (1977)

Nothing rare about these but I thought I'd post something tempting in order to get some feedback on the Megashares links, so let me know how you get on with the downloads.

http://d01.megashares.com/dl/HZc5mQB/Ramones Leave Home.rar *
 * Includes Carbona Not Glue, Babysitter and Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, all of which in turn featured on various releases of the LP.

From Ramones by Nicholas Rombes:

Rombes also described the Ramones as making short, fast songs about nothing. These 3 albums were released in the space of 20 months- the 30 odd songs that the Ramones had together early in 1976 recorded in the order that they were written.  Massively important records that, hard as it may be to believe now, were not commercial smashes.

Joey Ramone (Jeffry Ross Hyman  1951 – 2001) - vocals
Johnny Ramone (John William Cummings 1948 – 2004) - guitar
Dee Dee Ramone  (Douglas Glenn Colvin 1951 – 2002) - bass, backing vocals
Tommy Ramone (Erdélyi Tamás 1952-) - drums

Raymond Williams

Why not have a read whilst the music is getting sorted?

Acknowledged as perhaps the masterpiece of materialist criticism in the English language, this omnibus ranges over British literary history from George Eliot to George Orwell to inquire about the complex ways economic reality shapes the imagination.

I lifted that blurb from Google books Acknowledged as perhaps the masterpiece- what the fuck does that mean? Oh yes! I tell you there is a masterpiece of materialist criticism in the English language and perhaps this is it?
Anyway, It's worth a read and it's here:

Ok, as the Badger said below, we're going to give this another shot. One thing, though, I'm not too sure about how good this Megashares service is. It's rock hard to upload to, and I haven't tested the downloads.
Let's see how it goes.
Constructive feedback welcome.

wepuneX project featuring Nobsta Nutts (2001)

A slice of gritty hip hop from Llanelli/ Swansea- from the gentlemen who went on to feature in The Headcase Ladz. Clever, caustic rhyming, loads of humour and social realism.
Thanks to Griff...
