An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
UK students of comparative law will welcome the publication of the latest edition of this substantial and authoritative legal textbook from the Routledge, and the Taylor & Francis Group. The author, Raymond Youngs, a solicitor, is a senior lecturer at Kingston University and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Global Law, University College London.
Comparative lawyers will recall that Kinston University was one of the pioneers in setting up a course aimed at examining UK links with EU law, specifically French law and German law. This book therefore makes a useful contribution to the study of European jurisprudence -- and -- in its scholarly, yet straightforward and succinct approach, functions as a real time-saver for students in this area. It is worth noting that, as mentioned in the preface to the first edition, the translations of statutory material contained in the book -- including extracts from the codes and constitutions -- are the author’s own.
This new edition incorporates all significant new developments that have emerged since the publication of the previous edition.
A broad range of new case law is examined on such issues as, to cite only a few examples: preventive detention… the internet… closed circuit television (CCTV)… DNA… the prevention of human trafficking… the privacy versus free speech debate… religious clothing… pre-nuptial agreements… and the balance between the fight against terrorism and personal freedom.
In this, as well as in previous editions, the aim has been two-fold: first to introduce and examine key areas of the three legal systems under discussion -- and secondly, to create a convenient means of allowing readers to compare them, noting both similarities and differences.
We quote the author’s observation that ‘the differences are… more revealing starting points for a critical appreciation of a legal system than mere speculation would be.’
To summarize, the book is divided into six sections, to cover constitutions, legal systems, court systems, human rights, torts and contracts, with emphasis throughout on such areas as the abuse of power and the rights of private individuals. The useful index at the back aids navigation, making it easier for students under pressure to look things up.
The book is certainly a formidable research resource, with copious footnotes, a useful bibliography, a list of websites and journal sources -- and extensive table of cases and of legislation. Practitioners as well as students of comparative law will no doubt find this book indispensable.

For several years muslims in Paris, France have been praying illegally in the middle of the streets. Thousands of muslims have taken over the streets every Friday for a public display of disobedience to France's secular laws. On September 16th, 2011 Paris banned public prayers stating they threatened their secular state. Here, hundreds of muslims protest by threatening violence even though French officials offered FREE space for Friday prayers, and have continuously spent public monies on the construction of mosques. What do you think would happen if a non-muslim began to protest in this way against the building of mosques, the islamization of France and the proliferation of No-Go Zones in which Sharia law has already replaced french law? What do you think would happen if a non-muslim began to make threats about blowing up mosques?

Reuters reports that France has banned ultra skinny models from walking fashion shows under a new law that passed on Friday.
Modeling agencies and fashion houses that hire these models will face possible fines up to 82,000 US dollars and even up to six months in prison.
The legislation reads that, "the activity of model is banned for any person whose Body Mass Index is lower than levels proposed by health authorities and decreed by the ministers of health and labor."
The new legislation requires models to present medical certificates showing a healthy BMI before they may be hired. and furthermore, any altered images of a model's appearance for commercial purposes must be labeled as being manipulated.

French Montana
Karim Kharbouch (born November 9, 1984), better known by his stage name French Montana, is an American rapper, entrepreneur, former videographer, and hip hop socialite. Born in Morocco, his family emigrated to the US when he was 13 years old. He is the founder of Coke Boys Music, and its predecessor Cocaine City Records. In 2012, he signed a joint-venture recording deal with Bad Boy Records and Maybach Music Group. Montana has been known for his frequent collaborations with producer Harry Fraud, and with rapper Max B before his conviction. More recently he is known for his collaborations with Rick Ross, Diddy and his MMG and Bad Boy labelmates along with his Coke Boys which include the late Chinx, Lil Durk, and his brother Zack.
French made his mixtape debut in 2007, and released his debut studio album Excuse My French on May 21, 2013. In 2003, he survived a gunshot to the head. Allegedly blackballed by radio and media in his earlier career stemming from his stint with Max B. In 2010, he had his breakthrough with "Choppa Choppa Down" which became a regional hit in clubs and radio throughout the South. By 2012, his single "Shot Caller" would be one of the most added/played tracks on urban contemporary radio in the country. His most successful commercial single "Pop That" remains a popular hit on club and summertime radio playlists to date. In 2014, French Montana was dating Khloé Kardashian, and the couple would be the frequent subject of tabloids and celebrity gossip. The couple formally broke up in mid-2015; French has also been linked to rapper Trina and actress Sanaa Lathan. Best known for his mixtapes, club hits, and feature collaborations, he has been called titles from "King of Mixtapes" to "King of Features".

The author, Raymond Youngs, a solicitor, is a senior lecturer at Kingston University and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Global Law, University College London.
Comparative lawyers will recall that Kinston University was one of the pioneers in setting up a course aimed at examining UK links with EU law, specifically French law and German law. This book therefore makes a useful contribution to the study of European jurisprudence -- and -- in its scholarly, yet straightforward and succinct approach, functions as a real time-saver for students in this area. It is worth noting that, as mentioned in the preface to the first edition, the translations of statutory material contained in the book -- including extracts from the codes and constitutions -- are the author’s own.
This new edition incorporates all significant new developments that have emerged since the publication of the previous edition.
A broad range of new case law is examined on such issues as, to cite only a few examples: preventive detention… the internet… closed circuit television (CCTV)… DNA… the prevention of human trafficking… the privacy versus free speech debate… religious clothing… pre-nuptial agreements… and the balance between the fight against terrorism and personal freedom.
In this, as well as in previous editions, the aim has been two-fold: first to introduce and examine key areas of the three legal systems under discussion -- and secondly, to create a convenient means of allowing readers to compare them, noting both similarities and differences.
We quote the author’s observation that ‘the differences are… more revealing starting points for a critical appreciation of a legal system than mere speculation would be.’
To summarize, the book is divided into six sections, to cover constitutions, legal systems, court systems, human rights, torts and contracts, with emphasis throughout on such areas as the abuse of power and the rights of private individuals. The useful index at the back aids navigation, making it easier for students under pressure to look things up.
The book is certainly a formidable research resource, with copious footnotes, a useful bibliography, a list of websites and journal sources -- and extensive table of cases and of legislation. Practitioners as well as students of comparative law will no doubt find this book indispensable.

Here, hundreds of muslims protest by threatening violence even though French officials offered FREE space for Friday prayers, and have continuously spent public monies on the construction of mosques. What do you think would happen if a non-muslim began to protest in this way against the building of mosques, the islamization of France and the proliferation of No-Go Zones in which Sharia law has already replaced french law? What do you think would happen if a non-muslim began to make threats about blowing up mosques?

On February 26, 2015, the French Graduate Student Association Conference keynote by Emmanuelle Saada In 1881, the French colonial State instituted a Code de l’indigénat (Native Code) in Algeria, a penal code applicable only to the subjects of the French Empire. The Code was a “judicial monster” in the words of one French deputy—a break with basic principles of French due process and penal law. It also provided the basic framework for extending and enforcing the colonial order, from the regularization of violence and expropriation to the administrative management of native populations, in the catastrophic context of the conquest.
