Royal Air Force Valley or more simply RAF Valley (Welsh: RAF y Fali) (IATA: VLY, ICAO: EGOV) is a Royal Air Force station on the island of Anglesey, Wales, and which is also used as Anglesey Airport. It provides fast-jet training using the BAE Systems Hawk and provides training for aircrew working with search and rescue.
The airfield was constructed in the latter part of 1940 and opened for operations on 1 February 1941 as a Fighter Sector Station under No. 9 Group RAF with the task of providing defence cover for England's industrial north-west and shipping in the Irish Sea. Initial detachments were made by Hawker Hurricanes of 312 and 615 Squadrons. A detachment of Bristol Beaufighters of 219 Squadron provided night fighter cover.
No. 456 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) formed at Valley on 30 June 1941 and became operational on 5 September flying Boulton Paul Defiants. By November the squadron had completely re-equipped with Beaufighter IIs, and these provided defensive night patrols over the Irish Sea until March 1943, when the unit moved away.
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. More specifically, it is the branch of a nation's armed services that is responsible for aerial warfare as distinct from an army, navy, or a marine corps. Typically, air forces are responsible for gaining control of the air, carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions, and providing support to land and naval forces.
The term "air force" may also refer to a tactical air force or numbered air force, which is an operational formation either within a national air force or comprising several air components from allied nations. Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.
Many air forces are also responsible for operations of the military space, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), and communications equipment. Some air forces may command and control other air defence assets such as anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, or anti-ballistic missile warning networks and defensive systems. Some nations, principally Russia, the former Soviet Union and countries who modelled their militaries along Soviet lines, have an air defence force which is organizationally separate from their air force.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed toward the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, it is the oldest independent air force in the world. Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history, in particular, playing a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain.
The RAF's mission is to support the objectives of the British Ministry of Defence (MoD), which are to "provide the capabilities needed: to ensure the security and defence of the United Kingdom and overseas territories, including against terrorism; to support the Government’s foreign policy objectives particularly in promoting international peace and security." The RAF describe its mission statement as "... [to provide] An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission." The mission statement is supported by the RAF's definition of air power, which guides its strategy. Air power is defined as: "The ability to project power from the air and space to influence the behaviour of people or the course of events."
A valley is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it.
In geology, a valley or dale is a depression that is longer than it is wide. The terms U-shaped and V-shaped are descriptive terms of geography to characterize the form of valleys. Most valleys belong to one of these two main types or a mixture of them, (at least) with respect to the cross section of the slopes or hillsides.
A valley in its broadest geographic sense is also known as a dale. A valley through which a river runs may also be referred to as a vale. A small, secluded, and often wooded valley is known as a dell or in Scotland as a glen. A wide, flat valley through which a river runs is known in Scotland as a strath. A mountain cove is a small valley, closed at one or both ends, in the central or southern Appalachian Mountains which sometimes results from the erosion of a geologic window. A small valley surrounded by mountains or ridges is sometimes known as a hollow. A deep, narrow valley is known as a cwm (also spelled combe or coombe). Similar geological structures, such as canyons, ravines, gorges, gullies, and kloofs, are not usually referred to as valleys. See also: "chine". A valley formed by erosion is called an erosional valley; a valley formed by geologic events such as drop faults or the rise of highlands is called a structural valley.
Valley is a village and electoral ward near Holyhead/Caergybi on the west coast of Anglesey, North Wales. Population (2001) 2,413, decreasing to 2,361 at the 2011 census.
In Welsh it is referred to as either Y Dyffryn (meaning The Valley) or [Y] Fali (pronounced as Valley). Recent research, prompted by local opposition to the name of Y Fali, suggested that Valley may be a corruption of the Irish Bally (settlement), or Baile as it is spelled in Irish. There does not appear to be a traditional Welsh language placename for the village, and thus there has been a reversion to Valley of late. There is no actual valley as the area is very flat, although a dip in the land was created when the Stanley Embankment to Holy Island was constructed, and this may be the origin of the name.
RAF Valley is a nearby Royal Air Force station concerned with the training of fast jet pilots. The runways are also used by Anglesey Airport who make commercial flights to Cardiff (and previously The Isle of Man). Valley railway station is on the North Wales Coast Line.

This was my first visit to the "Mach Loop" Whilst on holiday in north Wales in 2009. It was awesome, I was very lucky, on my first day there were over 30 passes, and on my second day loads of Typhoons and a F-15. The photographers up there were a very friendly people, and I would like to thank all of them, for the tips and advice they gave me about the Mach Loop. In 2005 Charlton Athletic celebrated their centenary year by building a statue of their most illustrious player Sam Bartram outside their Valley ground. Moira Bartram, Sam’s daughter, unveiled the statue as well as donating her father’s papers to the club. These included press clippings and photographs that charted his career as a footballer and also his wartime service in the RAF. On the 70th anniversary of the Blitz it seems fit to use the Bartram archive to tell both his story and, through it, the local experience of the trials and tribulations of World War 2. The film is to be used as a learning tool by local primary school children in the Charlton area studying QCA History Unit 9: What was it like for a child in World War 2? http://planestv.com/shop/dvd/raf-valley-airshow-1993 RAF Valley in Anglesey is home to the historic No 4 Flying Training School, Strike Commands Air to Air Missile Establishment and also search and rescue helicopters. The show naturally attracted a big contingent of current and historical RAF types and we include these in Part II including the RAF Valley Solo Display Hawk. In Part I we show the foreign participants including the national aerobatic teams of Italy and Chile and also some rare privately owned ex-military jets, all of which saw service at Valley at some stage. We also recorded the arrivals for static display including the Saab Draken, F4 Phantom and - a treat for enthusiasts - the only Meteor still flying in British military service.
