Celebrated for the rows of largely intact Victorian terraces that provide a snapshot into Sydney’s past, this picturesque suburb is only three kilometres from the CBD making it a popular base for city workers. The streets to the north of Oxford Street, a key shopping, wining and dining strip, are the most coveted. They meander down a leafy hillside in the general direction of the harbour and play host to some of the area’s finest terraces, many heritage-listed. While lots of terraces have been restored and updated, there are still renovator’s delights awaiting brave souls.
You’ll find traditional pubs, fine art galleries, designer boutiques and trendy cafes scattered through the suburb and each Saturday the Paddington Markets attracts thousands of visitors to the grounds of the Uniting Church where local art, craft and fashion compete for interest. Woollahra Council is backing future retail success with its Activate Oxford Street initiative to attract unique retailers and further increase visitor numbers.
