Five-time
Academy Award nominee
Amy Adams may get closer to landing an
Oscar as two of her movies are competing at the
Venice film festival this year, including
Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi thriller "
Arrival" that premieres on Thursday (
September 1).
Adams plays a linguist hired by the
U.S. government to go inside one of the spaceships that touched down around the world and establish contact with the extra-terrestials onboard, develop a common language and ultimately understand the purpose of their visit.
The movie, which also stars
Forest Whitaker and
Jeremy Renner, is one of 20
U.S. and international films vying for the
Golden Lion that will be awarded on
September 10.
Various scenes in the movie are silent, with
Villeneuve using close-ups of Adams to convey that communication does not always require words.
"I was drawn in by the intimacy of it," Adams told Reuters on Wednesday (August 31).
She said she always asks directors why they want her for a part and that she refuses roles where they are looking for "someone to be likeable".
"
Denis said '
I need to know what she's thinking," she later added at a press conference.
"Arrival" is one of several movies in
Venice that feature a strong female lead. Adams said her role was just a reflection of society and the lives women lead nowadays.
The character "felt like every women I know who's struggling with hard things, working through personal issues while also heading out into the world", she said.
After a period in the doldrums, the world's oldest film festival is again seen as a launch pad for the industry's award season after premiering
Academy winners in its last three editions.
Adams, who is doing double duty in Venice, also starring in fashion designer
Tom Ford's thriller "
Nocturnal Animals", has yet to win an Oscar.
Asked whether the two movies showing in Venice could finally earn her the sought-after trophy, Adams told Reuters she is not trying to think about it too much at this stage.
"When you have Tom Ford, who's so great, and you have Denis Villeneuve, I think you can't help but get excited about what the potential for the films are going to be," she said.''You know, so many women that I know sort of move through life with great intelligence and they have so many different roles in their life, and so for me that was a great draw to
Louise that she didn't feel foreign, she didn't feel strange to me she felt like every women I know who's struggling with hard things, who's working through personal issues while also heading out into the world and just handling life and work and that's really our jobs as men and women, I mean it's a constant balance, a constant juggling act."''There's something really, I think, fascinating that the film kind of touches on - when humanity is at its worst, it also allows itself to find it at its best with compassion, and I think that's displayed a bit in this film and when there is a unity and not division, there's something really quite powerful, if we could all accept the fact that we are all one - it's pretty powerful sort of thought, I think.''''One of the questions that I ask directors when they offer me something - because I come from the world where I audition, so when I got a part I knew why I got it. So now when a director offers me a part I say, 'Why do you want me to play this? Why?' And if they ever tell me that they want someone to be likeable, I don't want to play the part. So my thing is that Denis said, 'I need to see what she's thinking and I can see what you're thinking when you act', so it helped me know what Denis wanted from me.'''She's amazing man -
I've known her for a long time personally and got to work with her
