In their showdown with Giants’ ace Madison Bumgarner, the Mets turned to the lineup they used heavily during the playoff push to end the regular season. Jose Reyes was leading off and at third base, followed by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and center fielder Curtis Granderson. To break up the left-handed batters against left-handed Bumgarner, rookie second baseman T.J. Rivera, a Bronx native, was slotted in between Granderson and right fielder Jay Bruce. Catcher Rene Rivera, first baseman James Loney and pitcher Noah Syndergaard rounded out the rest of the lineup. The decision to start Loney added a bit of intrigue because Lucas Duda was left off the roster entirely. Mets Manager Terry Collins said the Mets wanted Loney’s defense and experience. “I thought I’d go with a guy who at least has played 100 games, instead of someone who has 10 at-bats,” Collins said. “And I talked to Lucas about it. I know he worked very, very hard to get back and get ready, but this is an awful big challenge tonight for a guy that’s just been back for ten days.” Loney does not hit for much power but he has hit better in September and had key hits during the playoff push. Duda offers more power potential but he missed four months because of a stress fracture in his back. He returned straight to the major leagues on Sept. 17 and has played in eight games but not complete games back to back because his body was not ready. If the Mets advance, Duda would be put on the roster. Even without Duda, Collins was going to have an eight-man bench for Wednesday’s game, with a near-even split of batters from both sides of the plate to deploy whenever he wants to push for offense. The Mets have three catchers for Wednesday night, which would free up Travis d’Arnaud as a pinch hitter given the presence of backup Kevin Plawecki. The bench also included Michael Conforto, Alejandro De Aza, Ty Kelly, Kelly Johnson, Eric Campbell and Juan Lagares, who can be useful as a pinch runner or defensive replacement.
