S. Korea marks 68th Armed Forces Day with grand ceremony

The day comes amid North Korea's ever increasing nuclear and missile threats,... and heightened inter-Korean tensions,... especially following Pyongyang's recent nuclear test. Kim Hyun-bin reports. It was quite the show. A 21 cannon salute, flyovers by helicopters and jets, and hundreds of soldiers marching in sync. A ceremony was held in Gyeryongdae in Chungcheongnam-do Province on Saturday to mark South Korea's 68th Armed Forces Day. Hundreds of guests, including President Park Geun-hye and Defense Minister Han Min-koo,... watched the ceremony, which involved thousands of service members from the Army, Navy and Air Force. President Park took to the podium to address the growing threats posed by North Korea. She emphasized that,... just this year alone, North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and numerous missile launches,... including ICBMs and ballistic missiles fired from submarines. "On September 9th, North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test, disregarding warnings from the international community. It was a clear example of North Korea's reckless actions that threaten peace, not only on the Korean Peninsula, but around the world." The South Korean leader also emphasized the importance of deploying the U.S. THAAD missile defense system to South Korea. She stressed it will protect citizens and the armed forces from North Korea's increasing missile and nuclear threats. "THAAD is the minimum self-defense measure needed to protect our citizens. It's a must to better counter North Korea's attacks. The North has been launching missile after missile. We will not put our citizens and troops at risk." North Korea claims its September 9th test was of a miniaturized nuclear warhead. Experts say Pyongyang will now focus on perfecting its ICBM technology through even more tests. "With the anniversary of the founding of North Korea's Workers' Party just around the corner on October 10th, many experts believe Pyongyang could conduct another provocation, such as an Inter-Continental ballistic missile launch."
