Keeping ancient gods asleep is a full time job in The Shrouded Isle, a new game from Kitfox Games that will have you managing cultists so that they're fed, housed, and happy. The latter can be a bit dicey, though, given that you'll be sacrificing someone to the Old Ones each season in order to maintain their slumber.

Designing Procedural Generation for Chasm, a Metroidvania Platformer

October 4, 2016 1:31 PM | Lena LeRay

chasm_screen_06.pngJames Petruzzi got into programming because he wanted to make games, but for a while he was making them in his spare time while working in software engineering. After partnering up with his high school friend Tim Dodd, they created Take Arms, a game which did well for the XBLIG marketplace, and while Petruzzi thinks it did pretty well, it wasn't "a big hit or a life-changing phenomenon" like they had hoped it would be. Petruzzi gave up game development for about six months after that, until he had the idea for Chasm, a procedurally generated take on Metroidvania platformers.

Many will have memories of what it felt like to spend a Summer babysitting. It's an odd experience as a teenager, having to learn what it's like to play like a kid again when you've reached a state when you're supposed to be too cool for this stuff anymore. Kimmy is a game about those days, having you become Dana, a young babysitter taking care of Kimmy, playing games with her and helping her make friends during those long, hot days.

Songs And Shadows, Masks And Magic: Masquerada

October 4, 2016 5:03 AM | Thomas Faust

masquerada-1.jpgThe RPG genre, often dragged down by the weight of its accumulated tropes and its lack of ambition when it comes to telling compelling new stories, is in need of some change now and again. Questing around in faux-medieval settings is perfectly fine, but the feeling of "been there, done that" sets in all too often long before your noble quest is over. If you feel the same way, Masquerada: Songs And Shadows, developed by Singaporean developer Witching Hour Studios, might come as a pleasant surprise indeed.

Knuckle Cracker has been building its own strategy niche for the past seven years through the Creeper World series. The trilogy of RTS/tower defense hybrids faced your arsenal of turrets and drones against a fluid threat, the titular entity that flowed over the maps with relentless, near-unstoppable force.

Now the developer's newest title Particle Fleet: Emergence evolves that premise, taking the battles into space and trading the liquid Creeper for an intelligent particle swarm that can overwhelm and adapt with terrifying speed.
