17-18 June, Khujand - The two-day International Trade Fair “Sughd-2016”, which started their work in Khujand gives the opportunity for over 100 Tajik producers and manufacturers, as well as producers from other countries to showcase their products, link up with their regional counterparts, and look for new partners for export of their products. Within the framework of the International Trade Fair, two international forums the “Food Forum” and the “Knowledge and Technology Transfer Forum” will be held, collecting over 200 private and public sector, as well as international organization representatives together to discuss the topics. The Fair is being organized for the third consecutive year, and gathers a wide range of participants from the whole country and abroad. This year for the first time the Trade Fair will be International, as the exhibition will also hosts companies from Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Poland, China, and others. The Trade Fair “Sughd-2016” is a continuation of a series of initiatives planned by the administration of Sughd region aimed at improving the investment and business climate in the region. The Government of Tajikistan convened the Symposium to highlight the vital importance of water and sanitation across 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Dushanbe, June 13, 2016 The first UN Information and Resource Center (UN IRC) in Tajikistan was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Sirodjiddin Aslov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Assistant Secretary General, Assistant Administrator, Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme for Eastern Europe and CIS countries, Regional UN Development Group Chair.  The opening ceremony was moderated by Mr. Alexander Zuev, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan. The ceremony was attended by the heads of UN Agencies in Tajikistan, representatives of diplomatic corps, civil society, young people and the media. UN IRC is one of the few established in the CIS space, is established under the Russian - Tajik Slavonic University in Dushanbe and is well equipped to provide the access to the information about the UN in general, its activities in Tajikistan and other relevant topics. The library of the UN IRC contains more than 6000 copies of the literature on the main UN languages and also provides access to all digital resources of major UN entities. The UN IRC will seek to increase the awareness about the United Nations, its agencies, funds and programmes presented in Tajikistan and the global agenda of the UN, including the SDGs. The UN IRC will provide timely, accurate, impartial, comprehensive, relevant and coherent information on UN objectives and activities to the widest global public. It is envisaged that the center will host events, open lectures, thematic meetings and relevant events with heads of UN agencies in Tajikistan, visiting UN and national experts on a regular basis. The Centre will provide an opportunity for students to become better acquainted with the activities of UN agencies, the approaches in resolving global issues of human development, population issues, eradication of poverty, hunger, inequality between countries, provision of health care, employment, climate change and environmental protection, and more. April 4, 2016  The Head of Isfara city Mr. Dilshod Rasulzoda Jabbori also hosted the UN PBSO and UN Tajikistan delegation. During the meeting participants discussed initiatives aimed at strengthening cross-border relations and further steps for developing close cooperation between local authorities and UN agencies in efforts to address the sources of tensions between border communities of Isfara district in Tajikistan and Batken district in Kyrgyzstan.  The mission then visited the border village of Somoniyon in Chorkuh municipality, which is adjacent to the Kyrgyz village of Koktash. Local residents, women and men, warmly welcomed the guests. During the conversation they highlighted the problems the community currently faces in its relations with its neighbors. They proposed projects aimed not only at resolving the existing problems but also contributing to the improvement of relations with their neighbors. The mission’s next meeting was with residents of Langari Bifotimai Zahro settlement of Chorkuh municipality. Residents gathered near a pump station which supplies irrigation water to their farmlands. Construction of the pump was supported by UNDP in 2015. This facility was built for the purposes of addressing the problem of water shortages and unauthorized access by the residents to a channel located in the territory of Kyrgyzstan. It is expected that UN agencies in Tajikistan will work on a number of similar initiatives in the framework of the current project supported by PBF/PBSO.
