The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is the largest, most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two in the reserve fleet, and three new carriers under construction. The service has 328,194 personnel on active duty and 101,199 in the Navy Reserve. It has 272 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 aircraft in active service as of February 2016.
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.

Newly hosted by Benari Poulten, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In this episode, we look at some cool facts related to the U.S. Navy. America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War. This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy. Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy. In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949. He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, ...

The U.S. Navy plans to deploy the high-tech MQ-4C Triton unmanned surveillance aircraft to Japan, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said on Tuesday. Greenert, quoted in the Japan Times, said the Triton is expected to be deployed to Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture after the Navy commences early operational use of the large drone by the end of 2017. The aircraft system, which will be integrated into maritime patrols as well as search and rescue missions, can reach altitudes higher than 10 miles and fly for as long as 30 hours in a single mission, covering 1 million square nautical miles of ocean. The drone is equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors, as well as radar sensors that have a 360-degree field of vision. The Triton is expected to support the Na...
Researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory have revealed a new technology that reportedly converts seawater into fuel by recovering carbon dioxide and hydrogen from the salt water and turning it into a liquid hydrocarbon fuel through a novel gas-to-liquid process. The two step process begins with the extraction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater. Scientists let the liquid pass through a cell which is subjected to an electric current. The seawater is next acidified by exchanging hydrogen ions produced at the anode with sodium ions. Meanwhile, the water is reduced to hydrogen gas at the cathode, and sodium hydroxide is formed. The sodium hydroxide is then added to the leftover seawater to neutralize its acidity. In the second step, the hydrogen and carbon dioxide ...
The U.S. Navy has developed a new unmanned underwater vehicle that looks and swims like a shark. The U.S. Navy’s new robot shark, called GhostSwimmer, is 5 feet long and weighs about 100 pounds, making it about the size of an albacore tuna, according to Wired. The robot uses its tail for propulsion. Because it looks and moves like a real fish, the GhostSwimmer is hard to spot and thus ideally suited for surveillance missions The robot can operate in depths ranging from 10 inches to 300 feet. It can be controlled via a 500-foot-long tether and transmit video and data in real time. It can also be launched without a tether and transmit data when it surfaces after underwater missions, Gizmag reported. The robot will be used for “surveillance, mine countermeasures, port security, and ...
The U.S. Navy has sent its premier surveillance plane to join in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The $35-billion Boeing P-8A Poseidon, originally designed to find and sink submarine ships, was first sent to Kuala Lumpur from Okinawa, where six other Poseidons are stationed. From Malaysia, the plane took off to patrol the eastern Indian Ocean. The P-8A is fitted with a maritime radar at its nose, enabling all-weather imaging and classification of ships and submarines. The plane is also equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors capable of heat detection. A magnetic detector at the tail of the plane serves to identify metallic objects in the ocean by picking up disturbances in the magnetic field. Typically, a creeping line search pattern is employed when ...
NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA — U.S. Navy engineers have tested a new electromagnetic catapult method that could one day be used to launch giant fighter jets into the sky. The system, called the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, was tested in Virginia last week. The Navy posted the video, which has racked up over 100,000 views, to its Youtube channel earlier this week. Steam powered catapults are currently used to provide the extra push for planes taking off from the limiting runways of aircraft carriers. This new technology, however, has its advantages over traditional catapults that use steam, including smoother acceleration and the fact that the magnet places less stress on the aircraft. The EMALS technology is also designed to work with more advanced carriers...
The Philippines will not hold any joint military exercises with its long-standing ally, the United States. President Rodrigo Duterte says next week’s war games will be the last such drills involving Filipino and American troops. He says the upcoming exercises will take place only because he doesn’t want to embarrass his defense secretary. According to Duterte, he has decided to scrap the annual drills because China is opposed to them. The controversial leader, however, insists that Manila will maintain its military alliance with Washington. Since taking office in June, Duterte has moved toward China in a bid to revive strained ties. He says he wants a foreign policy NOT dependent on the US. USS Virginia (SSN-774) is a United States Navy attack submarine, the lead boat of her class and the tenth vessel of the Navy to be named for the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as the first US Navy attack submarine to be named after a state, a pattern that is common throughout her class.
The United States Armed Forces[5] are the federal military forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.[6] The President of the United States is the military's overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force. It played an important role in the American Civil War, where leading generals on both side...

The Nimitz-class supercarriers are a class of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service with the United States Navy. The lead ship of the class is named for World War II United States Pacific Fleet commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Navy's last fleet admiral. With an overall length of 1,092 ft (333 m) and full-load displacements of over 100,000 long tons, they have been the largest warships built and in service, although they are being eclipsed by the upcoming Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h) and maximum power of aroun...
