South of the equator, in Kenya, is Nakuru Lake one of the natural wonders of the world and the ideal habitat for a large variety of African wildlife. In 1967, Nakuru was the first National Park in Africa that was also designated as a bird reserve. It covers an area of 188 square kilometres and contains much flora and fauna.There are more than four hundred varieties of birds in Nakuru and British biologist Peter Scott called this bird paradise, ‘the greatest ornithological spectacle on Earth’. There are flamingos for as far the eye can see and also large numbers of pelicans, plus the Nimmersatt, an African stork. Large herds of antelope and zebra graze on the hot savannah while vultures, lions and hyena hunt for food among the more isolated, slow moving and weaker animals. Giraffes, elephants and rhinos share the same nutritious trees while some of the taller trees are the perfect home for monkeys and baboons. The massive Plant Eater is, apart from the elephant, the largest land mammal in the world plus, with more than thirty varieties of black and two varieties of white rhinos, Lake Nakuru ensures the continued protection of these mighty creatures. Africa is like a Noah’s Ark in which the animals of its game reserves live free and protected. It’s no surprise therefore Lake Nakuru is known as a magnificent wonder of the Dark Continent’s natural world.

Driving through the dimly lit forest, the broad grasslands soon opened before us and Lake Nakuru emerged on our left. It is this lake that makes Nakuru National Park so famous. Lakes bring bird life. And shallow lakes provide algae for hungry flamingos. Known as, "The Sea of Pink", Lake Nakuru is usually swathed in rosey feathers however, due to extreme flooding, the usual "sea of pink" was only a few splotches. The ones who remained however, searched through the deep waters for food while the more dietary flexible pelicans, performed beautiful and synchronized dives to find fish.
Then came the big game. Water buffalos were the first to spot. Lounging about the lake, dozens of water buffalo chewed on grass, relieved themselves constantly and stared at me with very unimpressed eyes. A more exciting find were the zebras. Mowing the grasslands for food, they always kept one eye on us and the other on their food. Peppy impalas, elegant giraffes, peculiar ostriches, and cheeky baboons also graced us with their presence but the best of all, a giant white rhino. As if painted onto the horizon, her prehistoric build appeared a statue at first. It wasn't until nearing her lake side domain, that movement began. Shifting slowly from one side to the next, it seemed she was giving us a show. Right profile, okay now left, right, now left. Her chiseled wrinkles and chipped horn revealed her age, old, but her spotlight personality exuded nothing but youth.

Nakuru
Nakuru, is the fourth largest city in Kenya and the capital of Nakuru County in Kenya and former capital of the Rift Valley Province. It has 307,990 inhabitants, making it the largest urban centre in the Kenyan mid-west with Eldoret in Uasin Gishu following closely behind. Nakuru lies about 1,850 m above sea level.
History
The history of Nakuru can perhaps be traced to the prehistoric period due to the archeological discoveries located about 8 km from the Central Business District at the Hyrax Hill reserve. Nakuru is Kenya's 4th largest urban centre with a population of 307,990. However, the modern town, as with many others in Kenya, derives its name from the Maasai speaking people of Kenya. Nakuru was established by the British as part of the White highlands during the colonial era and it has continued growing into a cosmopolitan city. It received township status in 1904 and became a municipality in 1952.
The history of Kenya as a country is closely intertwined with that of Nakuru as a town and a district which is now a county. The first and second presidents of Kenya maintained their semi-official residents within the city, Jomo Kenyatta, and Daniel arap Moi. The city for a long time has been the hotbed of Kenyan politics and it was home to a variety of colorful politicians including the late Kariuki Chotara, Kihika Kimani and the late Mirugi Kariuki and Koigi Wamwere.

Driving through the dimly lit forest, the broad grasslands soon opened before us and Lake Nakuru emerged on our left. It is this lake that makes Nakuru National Park so famous. Lakes bring bird life. And shallow lakes provide algae for hungry flamingos. Known as, "The Sea of Pink", Lake Nakuru is usually swathed in rosey feathers however, due to extreme flooding, the usual "sea of pink" was only a few splotches. The ones who remained however, searched through the deep waters for food while the more dietary flexible pelicans, performed beautiful and synchronized dives to find fish.
Then came the big game. Water buffalos were the first to spot. Lounging about the lake, dozens of water buffalo chewed on grass, relieved themselves constantly and stared at me with very unimpressed eyes. A more exciting find were the zebras. Mowing the grasslands for food, they always kept one eye on us and the other on their food. Peppy impalas, elegant giraffes, peculiar ostriches, and cheeky baboons also graced us with their presence but the best of all, a giant white rhino. As if painted onto the horizon, her prehistoric build appeared a statue at first. It wasn't until nearing her lake side domain, that movement began. Shifting slowly from one side to the next, it seemed she was giving us a show. Right profile, okay now left, right, now left. Her chiseled wrinkles and chipped horn revealed her age, old, but her spotlight personality exuded nothing but youth.
