Dawn had not yet broken at the waterhole in northern Kenya, where the stallion trembled as he hesitated in the nearby brush. Experience warned him that this would be his only chance to drink before the farmers and their livestock claimed the area for themselves. He had gone 4 days without water and desperately needed hydration and food. Cautiously he approached the edge of the waterhole, his ears pricked for any sound of the equally hungry lions he knew lurked nearby. At last, he slowly lowered his magnificent head and drank deeply. Once a thriving species with over 15,000 individuals roaming throughout Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, their numbers have now shrunk to less than 2,000 in the wild. Grevy’s Zebras have undergone one of the most substantial reduction of range of any African mammal. Their numbers continue to decline due to constant encroachment by pastoral locals and their domestic livestock, as well as the long-term effects of overgrazing and the severe drought conditions the region has endured for numerous years. During such times, the human populations block the Grevy’s access to vital waterholes for their own use, causing high death rates and forcing surviving zebras away from their natural habitat.
