Now the adventurer Steve Fossett is attempting to set a new altitude record - 62,000 feet above El Calafate in Argentian Patagonia.

He aims to fly a glider plane higher than anyone has before - almost into space.

Fossett's latest challenge is called the Perlan Project.
It is a two-fold mission, one to break a gliding world record and the other to conduct scientific research.
It's supported by NASA who have donated some of the equipment.

Fossett is no stranger to extreme conditions.
In 2002 he created aviation history by flying a hot air balloon around the world alone.
This year he did it again becoming the first person to fly alone around the world non-stop.
But while he may break some of his records solo, he always works as part of a team.
And for this record attempt, he will have a co-pilot.

"My flying partner is Einar Enevoldson and he used to be a NASA test pilot in aeroplanes but he is also a very good glider pilot and he originated this project."

Fossett and Enevoldsen plan to ride the wave of wind that blows over the Andes.
This wind will lift the glider, aiming to reach an altitude of about 30km - three times higher than aeroplanes fly, and twice the current record.
The launch is from Calafate airport near the Chilean border.
A glider does not have it's own engine so it is towed behind a regular aeroplane for take-off.
The vortex reaches speeds of about 180kmph.
As it rises, it creates a powerful updraft, high into the stratosphere .

The Scaled Composites Model 311 Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer (registered N277SF) is an aircraft designed by Burt Rutan in which Steve Fossett flew a solo nonstop airplane flight around the world in 2 days 19 hours and 1 minute (67 hours 1 minute) from February 28, 2005 until March 3, 2005. The flight speed of 590.7 km/h (342.2 mph) set the Absolute World Record for the fastest nonstop unrefueled circumnavigation, beating the mark set by the previous Rutan-designed Voyager aircraft at 9 days 3 minutes and an average speed of 186.11 km/h (115.65 mph).
The aircraft was owned by the pilot Steve Fossett, sponsored by Richard Branson's airline, Virgin Atlantic, and built by Burt Rutan's company, Scaled Composites. The two companies subsequently went on to work together on Virgin Galactic.

Record-breaking balloonist Steve Fossett arrived back home in the US Friday, after his balloon touched down on Earth in New Delhi last Tuesday.
Fossett travelled half-way around the world in just six days, breaking two ballooning records.
The adventurer didn't make his original goal to travel around the world non-stop, but says he's very satisfied with his trip.
Steve Fossett walked off his plane and into Dulles International Airport looking a bit tired, but feeling very accomplished.
The balloonist has been away from home less than two weeks, but in that time he experienced what the rest of us can only imagine.
He returned to the US Friday short of his intended goal to travel around the world.
But much richer than when he departed, holding two ballooning records, for the greatest distance and longest time in the air.
Fossett refused to answer most questions about his trip, saying he will go into detail at a press conference in Washington on Monday.
But he did say his trip back to the US has been a long one, and he's definitely happy to be home.
SOUNDBITE:
"One of the interesting things was I couldn't get a visa to enter India. So my flight was delayed there for a day and I had to stay in the transit lounge in New Delhi.
(Q: Does it feel good to be back on the ground?)
Yes..Its taken almost as long to get back as it did to fly to India!"

Fossett set off from St. Louis, Missouri on January 13, on a quest to travel around the world solo.
The balloonist made it about halfway in six days, when he ran low on fuel and was forced to land in a remote corner of India.
Libya would not grant Fossett permission to fly over the country, so the balloonist had to change his route and fly over North Africa, instead.
Libya later relented, but by then Fossett had used up most of his fuel, and his trip around the globe was cut short.
He landed in a tiny village in New Delhi, after covering just over nine-thousand miles in six days, two hours and 54 minutes.
And today, Fossett says it would have been nice to accomplish what he set out to do, but he is still very satisfied.

"It was a successful flight. I was really happy with the way it worked out."

One of the more tragic stories in recent news - the disappearance and demise of a great name in aviation and one of the greatest adventurers of our time - Steve Fossett.
I remember my dad telling us about his flight around the world a while back, one of those names along with guys like Burt Rutan, that just seem almost invincible...but all it take is one time, one mistake, or random accident, that suddenly brings that illusion crashing down, and bring us back to the reality of the our own mortality, and how fragile it really is in the end.
We may never know what Really happened in those mountains exactly, wether it was a tragic, freak malfunction or mechanical failure, a physical incident (heart attack, etc.), pilot error or overconfidence, or some combination of those factors. all I know is that it is a sad happening, and that I hope that the final results of the recent DNA test this November can give some final closer to his loved ones.

http://fossett.airsafe.org - On September 3rd, 2007, adventurer Steve Fossett took off from Yerington, Nevada on a short flight in a Bellanca Super Decathlon, and went missing. After more than a year, a hiker found some of his personal effects high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California on September 29, 2008. Two days later, authorities spotted wreckage from his aircraft. Possible human remains were also found at the site.
The aircraft crashed into a steep granite slope at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, seven miles west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. The crash site is about 93 miles or 150 kilometers south of Yerington, Nevada. Pieces of the plane were scattered over a steeply sloped area, with the engine about 300 feet from the fuselage wreckage. There was also evidence of a post crash fire. Fossett was the only occupant.

James Stephen "Steve" Fossett (April 22, 1944 – c. September 3, 2007) was an American businessman and a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. He made his fortune in the financial services industry and was best known for many world records, including five nonstop circumnavigations of the Earth: as a long-distance solo balloonist, as a sailor, and as a solo flight fixed-wing aircraft pilot.
A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club, Fossett set 116 records in five different sports, 60 of which still stood when he disappeared.
On September 3, 2007 Fossett was reported missing after the plane he was flying over the Great Basin Desert in Nevada failed to return. Despite a month of searches by the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and others, Fossett could not be found and the search by CAP was called off on October 2, 2007. Privately funded and privately directed search efforts continued, but after a request from Fossett's wife he was declared legally dead on February 15, 2008.

Richard Branson
Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson (born 18 July 1950) is an English business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known as the founder of Virgin Group, which comprises more than 400 companies.
Branson expressed his desire to become an entrepreneur at a young age. At the age of sixteen his first business venture was a magazine called Student. In 1970, he set up a mail-order record business. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores. Branson's Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he set up Virgin Atlantic and expanded the Virgin Records music label.
In March 2000, Branson was knighted at Buckingham Palace for "services to entrepreneurship". In July 2015, Forbes listed Branson's estimated net worth at US $5.2 billion.
Early life
Branson was born in Blackheath, London, the eldest of three children of Eve Branson (née Evette Huntley Flindt; born 1924), a former ballet dancer and air hostess, and Edward James Branson (1918–2011), a barrister. Branson has two younger sisters. His grandfather, the Right Honourable Sir George Arthur Harwin Branson, was a judge of the High Court of Justice and a Privy Councillor. Branson was educated at Scaitcliffe School, a prep school in Berkshire, before briefly attending Cliff View House School in Sussex. His third great-grandfather, John Edward Branson, left England for India in 1793. His father, Harry Wilkins Branson, later joined him in Madras. Through intermarriage, Branson is 3.9% Indian and 1.7% Turkish. Branson attended Stowe School, an independent school in Buckinghamshire until the age of sixteen. Branson has dyslexia and had poor academic performance as a student, and on his last day at school, his headmaster, Robert Drayson, told him he would either end up in prison or become a millionaire. Branson's parents were supportive of his endeavours from an early age.

After more than a year, a hiker found some of his personal effects high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California on September 29, 2008. Two days later, authorities spotted wreckage from his aircraft. Possible human remains were also found at the site. The aircraft crashed into a steep granite slope at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, seven miles west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. The crash site is about 93 miles or 150 kilometers south of Yerington, Nevada. Pieces of the plane were scattered over a steeply sloped area, with the engine about 300 feet from the fuselage wreckage. There was also evidence of a post crash fire. Fossett was the only occupant.

This year he did it again becoming the first person to fly alone around the world non-stop.
But while he may break some of his records solo, he always works as part of a team.

Fossett refused to answer most questions about his trip, saying he will go into detail at a press conference in Washington on Monday.
But he did say his trip back to the US has been a long one, and he's definitely happy to be home.

"One of the interesting things was I couldn't get a visa to enter India. So my flight was delayed there for a day and I had to stay in the transit lounge in New Delhi.
(Q: Does it feel good to be back on the ground?)
Yes..Its taken almost as long to get back as it did to fly to India!"

Fossett set off from St. Louis, Missouri on January 13, on a quest to travel around the world solo.
The balloonist made it about halfway in six days, when he ran low on fuel and was forced to land in a remote corner of India.
Libya would not grant Fossett permission to fly over the country, so the balloonist had to change his route and fly over North Africa, instead.
Libya later relented, but by then Fossett had used up most of his fuel, and his trip around the globe was cut short.
He landed in a tiny village in New Delhi, after covering just over nine-thousand miles in six days, two hours and 54 minutes.
And today, Fossett says it would have been nice to accomplish what he set out to do, but he is still very satisfied.

Fossett refused to answer most questions about his trip, saying he will go into detail at a press conference in Washington on Monday.
But he did say his trip back to the US has been a long one, and he's definitely happy to be home.

"One of the interesting things was I couldn't get a visa to enter India. So my flight was delayed there for a day and I had to stay in the transit lounge in New Delhi.
(Q: Does it feel good to be back on the ground?)
Yes..Its taken almost as long to get back as it did to fly to India!"

Fossett set off from St. Louis, Missouri on January 13, on a quest to travel around the world solo.
The balloonist made it about halfway in six days, when he ran low on fuel and was forced to land in a remote corner of India.
Libya would not grant Fossett permission to fly over the country, so the balloonist had to change his route and fly over North Africa, instead.
Libya later relented, but by then Fossett had used up most of his fuel, and his trip around the globe was cut short.
He landed in a tiny village in New Delhi, after covering just over nine-thousand miles in six days, two hours and 54 minutes.
And today, Fossett says it would have been nice to accomplish what he set out to do, but he is still very satisfied.

"It was a successful flight. I was really happy with the way it worked out."

"Relax!"

Fossett says he plans to stay the weekend in Washington, DC, before returning next week to his home in Colorado.
Monday, Fossett will hold a press conference at the National Geographic headquarters in Washington.
But in the meantime, the balloonist says he's taking the weekend off to relax and have dinner with his wife, who will meet him in Washington tonight.

One of the more tragic stories in recent news - the disappearance and demise of a great name in aviation and one of the greatest adventurers of our time - Steve Fossett.
I remember my dad telling us about his flight around the world a while back, one of those names along with guys like Burt Rutan, that just seem almost invincible...but all it take is one time, one mistake, or random accident, that suddenly brings that illusion crashing down, and bring us back to the reality of the our own mortality, and how fragile it really is in the end.
We may never know what Really happened in those mountains exactly, wether it was a tragic, freak malfunction or mechanical failure, a physical incident (heart attack, etc.), pilot error or overconfidence, or some combination of those factors. all I know is that it is a sad happening, and that I hope that the final results of the recent DNA test this November can give some final closer to his loved ones.

The aircraft crashed into a steep granite slope at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, seven miles west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. The crash site is about 93 miles or 150 kilometers south of Yerington, Nevada. Pieces of the plane were scattered over a steeply sloped area, with the engine about 300 feet from the fuselage wreckage. There was also evidence of a post crash fire. Fossett was the only occupant.

El Salvador's bishop has asked Pope John Paul II to intervene during his visit to Cuba this week, on behalf of a Salvadorean, Raul Cruz Leon.
He is currently in a Cuban jail awaiting the death penalty for killing an Italian tourist during a series of bomb attacks on the country's hotel industry last year.
Hundreds of Salvadoreans have joined the family of Raul Cruz Leon by joining in candle lit vigils and sending correspondence to the Catholic church asking for it to intervene during the papal visit to Havana.
Cruz Leon, a 26-year-old, was arrested last September in Havana, for carrying out explosive attacks on several hotels in Cuba.
A bomb at the hotel Copacabana caused killed Fabil Di Celmo, an Italian empressario.
Cruz Leon admitted to the crimes before the Cuban press, but his family believes Cruz was pressured into the confession by the Castro government.
Cruz's mother wrote to the Vatican and hopes the Pope will intervene on her son's behalf during his visit to Cuba this week.

"There is great hope that with the arrival of his holiness to Cuba, and about my son, I feel that the Pope's visit will benefit my son. Because the church will ask for the Cuban's not to carry on with the death penalty. I think that the holy father will advocate for him while there."

El Salvador's Bishop Fernando Saenz has joined the family is asking the Pope to intervene.
He is hopeful the papal visit will be beneficial for Cruz Leon.

"It is lack of logical thinking when the death penalty is applied, when there are other procedures that could be used to protect society from the damages anyone could inflict upon it. The death penalty like abortion forms part of the Cuban legislation and in this case the law is being applied on a prisoner who is obviously a Salvadorean citizen. We then trust that the atmosphere the Pope's visit will create, permits a closer study of the extraordinary value of the human life and at the same time benefits our fellow countryman."

Cruz Leon's family also has the support of other organisations and El Salvador's government.

As Catholics around the world await the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba, the people of El Salvador will be among those watching particularly closely.
El Salvador's bishop has asked Pope John Paul II to intervene during his visit to Cuba this week, on behalf of a Salvadorean, Raul Cruz Leon.
He is currently in a Cuban jail awaiting the death penalty for killing an Italian tourist during a series of bomb attacks on the country's hotel industry last year.
Hundreds of Salvadoreans have joined the family of Raul Cruz Leon by joining in candle lit vigils and sending correspondence to the Catholic church asking for it to intervene during the papal visit to Havana.
Cruz Leon, a 26-year-old, was arrested last September in Havana, for carrying out explosive attacks on several hotels in Cuba.
A bomb at the hotel Copacabana caused killed Fabil Di Celmo, an Italian empressario.
Cruz Leon admitted to the crimes before the Cuban press, but his family believes Cruz was pressured into the confession by the Castro government.
Cruz's mother wrote to the Vatican and hopes the Pope will intervene on her son's behalf during his visit to Cuba this week.

"There is great hope that with the arrival of his holiness to Cuba, and about my son, I feel that the Pope's visit will benefit my son. Because the church will ask for the Cuban's not to carry on with the death penalty. I think that the holy father will advocate for him while there."

El Salvador's Bishop Fernando Saenz has joined the family is asking the Pope to intervene.
He is hopeful the papal visit will be beneficial for Cruz Leon.

"It is lack of logical thinking when the death penalty is applied, when there are other procedures that could be used to protect society from the damages anyone could inflict upon it. The death penalty like abortion forms part of the Cuban legislation and in this case the law is being applied on a prisoner who is obviously a Salvadorean citizen. We then trust that the atmosphere the Pope's visit will create, permits a closer study of the extraordinary value of the human life and at the same time benefits our fellow countryman."

Unfortunately the first part of the video had graphical errors due to another program running under the window. "The flight was five days long and I flew from St. Louis in the United States and that's about one third of the distance around the world."
(Question: So we heard that you refused from landing here and decided to have a flight - so is that true.)
"Oh, that is for the permission?"
(Question: "Would you please explain the situation with the landing in a few words.)
"Oh, well, that's different than I thought. Well, I decided that I needed to land because my equipment wasn't going to make it around the world. So I discovered the problems while I was still in Bulgaria and I was very close to the Black Sea. And so I didn't have time to land in Bulgaria and then I had to fly that whole extra day. And fortunately this morning, Russia issued me the permission - official permission - to land here."
(Question: What are the plans for the closest future?)
"Well, I have about two days of work to pack up the balloon equipment and then I'm anxious to go home."
(Question: So, are you planning to go by balloon again?)
"I don't know, it's a very difficult flight and I haven't decided."
(Question: And what was the reason for you to land?)
"The burners... one. I have two burners and one of them had a part that had failed and the other one was starting to have the same... starting to develop the same failure."
(Question: So have you made your decision to make one more flight?)
"No, I've not made any decision. I want to get home and be warm."

In August, 2009 I was visiting in England and was interviewed for a program that investigates the disappearance of Steve Fossett. My part of the show examines how Fossett's disappearance relates to the crash of a Beech 18 AT-7 Navigator on November 18, 1942 on Mendel Glacier in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. The one thing they have in common is attempting to fly over, through, or across the Sierra Nevada in questionable atmospheric conditions. The subject of the 1942 crash is covered in my new book, FINAL FLIGHT - to be published August, 2010.

Millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett vanished somewhere across a landscape of soaring peaks and sagebrush desert notorious for winds so powerful and tricky they can swirl an airplane like a leaf and even shear off a wing.
Late on Wednesday, officials at the search control centre discounted rumours that the missing plane had been found.
"I do want to let you people know," Major Cynthia Ryan, of the Nevada Civil Air Patrol told reporters. "We have not found him. We have not found an aeroplane. I don't know what condition he is in because we don't know where he is. We haven't found him."
She said that aerial searches had found evidence of wrecked planes but all had proved to be old crash sites which had never been mapped.
"We are trying to slowly and methodically search, breakdown each area into a grid and then search it, and then knock off each grid and then move on to the next grid." said Jeff Bese of the Nevada Air National Guard. According to Reuters, the 64-year-old emerged from the balloon's gondola after more than 11 days aloft. According to millionaire businessman and fellow aviator Dick Smith, who was on hand to assist with the landing, he expressed his appreciation for the smell of the earth, and "how wonderful it is." Konyukhov embarked on his epic journey from Northam in Western Australia on July 12th. Konyukhov's route took him from Australia to above New Zealand, the Pacific Ocean, South America, the Cape of Good Hope and the Southern Ocean.
As he made his way back to Australia, his website reported his comments as a polar jet stream pushed him towards Antarctica.
It is "scary to be so down south and away from civilisation," he said. "This place feels very lonely and remote. No land, no planes, no ships."
His crew said the balloon, which is 56m (183ft) tall and uses helium and hot air, covered the route in 11 days and six hours, beating Fossett's record by more than two days.
The American, who also started from Northam, took 13 days and eight hours in setting his record.
There has been no immediate comment by the World Air Sports Federation

James Stephen "Steve" Fossett (April 22, 1944 – c. September 3, 2007) was an American businessman, and a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. He made his fortune in the financial services industry, and was best known for many world records, including five nonstop circumnavigations of the Earth: as a long-distance solo balloonist, as a sailor, and as a solo flight fixed-wing aircraft pilot. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club, Fossett set 116 records in five different sports, 60 of which still stood when he disappeared. He was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. He made his fortune in the financial services industry, and was best known for many world records, including five nonstop circumnavigations of the Earth: as a long-distance solo balloonist, as a sailor, and as a solo flight fixed-wing aircraft pilot.
A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club, Fossett set 116 records in five different sports, 60 of which still stood when he disappeared.
