A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

The Olympic National Park coastline has some of the wildest and most beautiful beaches in the world. With amazing views, sea-stacks, piles of driftwood, tide-pools and miles of coast line to explore they are popular for beach combing, backpacking, and hiking along the Pacific Ocean, and less for sunbathing. Locations in the video: Shi Shi beach (0:05), Realto Beach (1:27), First Beach - La Push (2:09), Second Beach (2:36), Third Beach (3:19), Ruby beach (3:45). Chance encounter with herd of Roosevelt Elk lolling in the fern grotto of the Quinalt Rainforest in Olympic National Park. September 18, 2016. The scene is interrupted at 4:27 by a huge limb fall (heard but not seen on the video). Yes, the big bull elk has managed to get a batch of moss stuck on his antler. No worries; it will fall off soon.

Rialto Beach is the jewel of Washing State Coast. It is a stunning place, filled with amazing Driftwoods, round rocks and cliffs. It's a must go place. So if you ever in Washington State peninsula, stop by and enjoy this brach that I consider one of the most beautiful Beaches of the USA.
As we travel full time around the country with our 9 kids, we try to find and explore all the local area has to offer. Doing that in the Pacific Northwest is amazingly simple. Today we hiked in the Olympic National Park and we felt as though we had been transported to a fairy tale. Huge gnarly trees covered in moss, boulders with carpets of green spilling over them, and the clearest sparkling water you can imagine! Come along for the ride! October 4, 2015 - We are traveling up US 101 up the west coast of Washington State. We spend the night at the Kalaloch Lodge in the Olympic National Park. Deacon and I loved playing on the beach, chasing sea gulls and flying a kite, but to top off the day we enjoyed the sunset. I recorded it real-time for later watching while Becky and I went to dine in the restaurant..

This is a hike inside the lush green forest of Olympic National Park in Washington state. It starts with a twenty minute hike to the Duckabush river, then back again, totaling nearly 40 minutes in length. The destination of the hike is a place beside the river called "The Ranger (fishing) Hole". About the audio: It was extremely quiet during this hike, and so I added some soothing sounds of indigenous birds. Otherwise, all you would hear is my footsteps and my breathing, and the sound of my jacket sleeves, and an occasional snort by Sasquatch in the woods beside me. I recorded the bird sounds within the Pacific Northwest also - beside a lake in the mountains of Oregon. The Duckabush river roar and other sounds are the actual sounds on location. This video is intended for those using tre...
This is my typical post hike gear talk in which I talk about some items that stood out to me on my recent hike in the OIympic NP.
I have been dropping pretty subtle hints the last few weeks that I will be heading to the Olympics National Park later this year for a hike. Well, it is not quite time yet, but it is getting close! So, I decided to go ahead and do a video to discuss some initial thoughts about the hike, the gear that I am bringing for the hike & how I plan to get it there, and of course, the people I am getting to hike with! While we don't have our exact start date pinned down, nor the exact route, we do know when we will all meet up, and then take it from there... So, as for the folks going with me: Barefoot Jake (http://www.barefootjake.com/) Jeff @ Washington Wilderness Adventure (https://www.facebook.com/barefootminimallife) Jesse (a friend of Jeff & Jake) Grant Sible @ Gossamer Gear (http://gossamer...
