A manhunt has been launched across the state for an escapee who fled custody in Fremantle - carrying out a carjacking in the process.
Danny Jay Brooks was arrested by police on Wednesday morning and was subsequently charged with aggravated armed robbery, stealing a motor vehicle and breach of bail.
But during the afternoon, the 38-year-old escaped with a 29-year-old woman, who was also in custody.
A short time later, the woman was apprehended by police on Market Street in Fremantle, but Brooks was seen to force the driver of a Toyota Aurion, parked in the Fremantle Train Station car park, to speed off.
The unsuspecting driver was then forced out the car at the intersection of Stirling Highway and Canning Highway.
The Aurion was then located crashed on Mandurah Road in Madora Bay around 11.50pm.
Police believe Brooks, who is described as 170cm tall, of a large build, with hazel eyes and a fair complexion, may have received injuries as a result of the crash.
A 29 year old woman from Gosnells will appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with escaping lawful custody and possession of stolen/unlawfully obtained property.
Members of the public are advised not to approach Brooks but to contact police on 000 or 131 444.
