The Other Terrorism: White Nationalist Twitter Growing Faster Than ISIL

“There is substantial and growing evidence that white nationalism is enjoying a meaningful resurgence within the United States . . .”

Twitter users who identify themselves as white nationalists and neo-nazis have been growing faster than supporters of ISIL group, rising more than 600 percent in four years, according to a university study.

The study from The Program on Extremism at The George Washington University analyzed accounts from prominent white nationalist organizations such as the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan. It found that from 2012 to 2016 these accounts had a 600 percent increase in followers, now estimated to stand at around 22,000 up from around 3,500 in 2012.

“There is substantial and growing evidence that white nationalism is enjoying a meaningful resurgence within the United States,” the report said.

The study also found that people who follow white nationalist accounts were unsurprisingly “invested in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.” White nationalist followers used Trump hashtags more than any other white nationalist related hashtag except for #whitegenocide.

White nationalist and neo-nazi groups were also active in “trolling” other accounts and tweets with racist remarks and flooding “social media with negative content.” Many white nationalists and neo-nazi groups have not been shut down and use Twitter relatively free of censorship.

The study also investigated Islamic State Group sympathizers, who have traditionally used twitter as their “preferred social platform.” American white nationalist organizations now “outperform ISIS in nearly every social metric, from follower counts to tweets per day.”

In an August crackdown against Islamic State Group sympathizers, the social media giant closed around 360,000 accounts because they believed that the accounts were advocating terrorism.

Despite the spike in followers on Twitter the report stated that, “white nationalists online do appear to inspire violence, a form of material participation, but not in a highly organized manner visible in open sources.”

  1. Your article is misleading. And it is racist. I am white. And I am against the globalization that we have seen over the past few decades. Does that make me for our own national identity? Yes. Does it make me a “nationalist?” I guess. Am I white? Yes. Am I a “white nationalist?”

The hysterical tone of this essay appears to conflate being a white nationalist with being a nazi. It is nothing of the kind. I am for a population that assimilates to the culture of the country. Is that racist? Hardly. I love 2Pac Shakur and listen to the blues masters (the originals, such as Jimmy Reed and T-Bone Walker), love our various cultures, speak Spanish and French, grew up in the ultra-tolerant San Francisco Bay Area.

Yet, this writer seems to be insisting that because I am white and because I am for strong borders and assimiliable immigrants, that I am a nazi racist. It is this kind of preposterous essay that damages the integrity of any liberal who would run it on his own blog.

  2. Well, if you don’t want to be associated with that particular faction of White nationalists, do you have a useful suggestion for what you want them to be called instead? Because I think a genuine majority of White nationalists think that Blacks have not assimilated, and that they have contributed nothing of value to America. “Assimilation” seems to be an elastic term that stretches to cover many agendas.

What hath supposed blues fan Lee Atwater wrought?

  3. White nationalism is an ideology that advocates a racial definition of national identity. These individuals identify and are attached to the perceived ” white nation” The modifier “white” refers to the type of nationalism, not necessarily to the the race of the person advocating it.
