may day weekend antics

Not a very restful Bank Holiday weekend:

Saturday: Kings Lynn CC 10 - 23:13 (fastest 10 since July 2008, 14th place)
Sunday: VC Norwich 25 - 58:33 (fastest 25 since August 2007, my second fastest 25, 18th place)
Monday: VC Barrachi 10 - 23:46 (30 seconds quicker than my Good Friday effort on this course)

Three rides over 25mph, quite pleased :)

2,000

Today went over 2,000 miles for the year (i.e. in 95 days so far). Am on 2036 miles in total, in just over 120 hours of cycling (i.e. averaging about 17mph). I'm averaging 21.43 miles per day although in reality I'm not going out every day, but usually cycling 20-30 mile training rides a few times a week with 50-60 mile longer rides thrown in when I have a chance. Also a few time trials, which I need to put up on the blog...

West Suffolk Wheelers sporting 21

Bike: Cervelo
Distance: 21 miles
Time: 56 minutes 11 seconds
Average speed: 22.426 mph

Faster then when I did this in 2011 (a long 57) but slower than 2007 (55) and 2008 (53!). Fastest men did 46s/47s!

A nice day though - sunny, with a little bit of breeze. The hills didn't seem that bad.

More notable were the Keystone Kops antics before the race, including various tyre issues, losing a glove and overshoe, and only getting a 3 mile warm up.

My Zipp 404 rear wheel is playing up, possibly the bearings, so will be riding on my new Ksyrium Equipes (pinched off the new bike) tomorrow.

1,500

67 days so far this year, and I went past 1,500 miles cycled in 2014 today, hitting 1,508.73 miles - that's an average of 22.5 miles a day.

CC Sudbury Mad March Hilly 21.7

Bike: Cervelo
Distance: 21.7 miles
Time: 58 minutes 18 seconds
Average speed: 22.333 mph

35th of 62

Headed out early to Lovejoy country (Lavenham) in glorious spring sunshine. The mad march hilly course is fun but tough - very little 'flat' (unsurprisingly) and always some technical challenge lurking to put me off my stride.

Didn't have much power in my legs (took the new road bike out for a 55 mile spin yesterday - including a recce of this course) and - while I was pleased to average over 21.7mph - I was a little disappointed with my placing overall. Maybe I could've gone a minute faster if I hadn't faffed around for much of the first half. I'm also not very good at climbing on the Cervelo, or going round corners for that matter. I also still need to spend some time tweaking my position on the bike.

Anyway, onwards and upwards! Another hilly challenge next week.

Shotley - Brantham - East Bergholt - Raydon - Hadleigh - Monks Eleigh - Lavenham - Boxford - Hintlesham - Ipswich

Bike: Felt
Distance: 53.57 miles
Time: 2 hours 59 minutes
Average speed: 17.9 mph
Maximum speed: 34.1 mph
Odometer (at end): 53 miles

The weather was fine, and most of the roads had dried out, so I headed out to Shotley with cycle gear and hopped on the bike I bought in the January sales (and have since tricked out with Ksyrium Equipe wheels). It's my first full carbon road bike (and fourth road bike overall since 2000) and the position is much more sporty/lower than the Condor, so it will be better for time trial training. It is also very quick and corners extremely well.

All in all, a fun "shakedown", although I stayed out for too long given I have a race tomorrow (I did a recce of the course as part of this ride) - there is some noise, which may be the BB, chainring bolts, pedals, stem or cassette, and the chain hadn't been oiled, but other than that, I think I'm going to get along well with this bike. Except it's bright white, and will be tricky to keep clean :)

Ipswich - Henley - Wickham Market - Blaxhall - Snape - Tunstall - Chillesford - Woodbridge - Ipswich

Bike: Condor
Distance: 48.18 miles
Time: 2 hours 49 minutes 59 seconds
Average speed: 17.1 mph
Maximum speed: 29.5 mph
Odometer (at end): 11456 miles

A grey, blustery day - not as much fun as yesterday, and my legs felt pretty tired. Got to Snape for my usual coffee and was treated poorly - ignored for 5 full minutes by the staff despite there being no queue. I've been stopping for coffee at Snape on bike rides on and off for the best part of ten years, but will look for other places now.

Over 100 miles for the weekend then - looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.
