Released in late September 2006, and directed by Andrew Davis - this $80-million dollar film only earned $15-million in profit. Kevin Costner and Aston Kutcher star in this action-adventure drama film that focuses on the life and training of the United State Coast Guard's elite rescue swimming team. Neal McDonough, Melissa Sagemiller, and Clancy Brown round out the supporting cast with commendable contributions, but the real focus on this picture is Costner and Kutcher. Costner is an extremely proficient rescue diver, capable of saving everything but his failing marriage. Whereas Kutchner is the hot-shot trainee more focused on breaking swimming records than saving lives. Both men are brilliant in their respective teacher / student roles, bouncing off each other with charged performances, especially in one emotional scene where Costner opens up about his troubled past, advising his protégé, " Save the ones you can. The rest, you've got to let go." Bookended by positively thrilling rescue-sequences on the turbulent seas in the Gulf of Alaska, the majority of the picture is your typical "boot camp" story... as we watch a group of promising cadets go through every test of endurance and skill to prove their readiness, as only 280 make the cut from a pool of 39,000. The 139-minute feature doesn't break any new ground during this middle-portion, but it's competently executed with effective use of Trevor Rabin's hory-heavy score and some brisk editing. With one lone exception however, the requisite training montage was stylistically, but curiously, filmed on low-definition video. An impressive chunk of the water scenes were filmed in a giant indoor pool built specially for this production... but its incorporation is so flawless, you never notice. The pacing of this picture never feels slow, but it does seem to contain a bit too much story for its own good, the middle training academy portion honestly could have been its own standalone movie. What "Top Gun" is to fighter pilots, this fun and re-watchable experience is to the US Coast Guard. The PG-13 rated adventure is capped off with a beautifully resounding epilogue that definitely stayed with me. Although fairly predictable and formulaic, this is a wonderful film that will make you laugh, cry, and of course, appreciate the real men and women who serve around the world. The Guardian (2006 film)
The Guardian (aka The Guardsman) is a 2006 action-adventure drama film directed by Andrew Davis. The film stars Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher and Melissa Sagemiller. The film's title is introduced by a mythic tale: people lost at sea often claim they feel a presence lifting them to the surface, breathing life into their bodies while they are waiting for help to arrive. They call this presence "The Guardian". The setting for the film is the United States Coast Guard and their Aviation Survival Technician (AST) program. The Guardian was released on September 29, 2006.
Plot
Ben Randall (Kevin Costner), the top rescue swimmer at the United States Coast Guard's Aviation Survival Technician (AST) program. Due to his frequent time at work, Ben's wife, requests a separation. When on a rescue, he loses his rescue team in an HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crash at sea. While waiting in a survival raft, his best friend, Chief Petty Officer Carl Billings (Omari Hardwick), dies. Shaken, Ben considers retiring but becomes an instructor at a Coast Guard training school.

Released in late September 2006, and directed by Andrew Davis - this $80-million dollar film only earned $15-million in profit. Kevin Costner and Aston Kutcher star in this action-adventure drama film that focuses on the life and training of the United State Coast Guard's elite rescue swimming team. Neal McDonough, Melissa Sagemiller, and Clancy Brown round out the supporting cast with commendable contributions, but the real focus on this picture is Costner and Kutcher. Costner is an extremely proficient rescue diver, capable of saving everything but his failing marriage. Whereas Kutchner is the hot-shot trainee more focused on breaking swimming records than saving lives. Both men are brilliant in their respective teacher / student roles, bouncing off each other with charged performances, especially in one emotional scene where Costner opens up about his troubled past, advising his protégé, " Save the ones you can. The rest, you've got to let go." Bookended by positively thrilling rescue-sequences on the turbulent seas in the Gulf of Alaska, the majority of the picture is your typical "boot camp" story... as we watch a group of promising cadets go through every test of endurance and skill to prove their readiness, as only 280 make the cut from a pool of 39,000. The 139-minute feature doesn't break any new ground during this middle-portion, but it's competently executed with effective use of Trevor Rabin's hory-heavy score and some brisk editing. With one lone exception however, the requisite training montage was stylistically, but curiously, filmed on low-definition video. An impressive chunk of the water scenes were filmed in a giant indoor pool built specially for this production... but its incorporation is so flawless, you never notice. The pacing of this picture never feels slow, but it does seem to contain a bit too much story for its own good, the middle training academy portion honestly could have been its own standalone movie. What "Top Gun" is to fighter pilots, this fun and re-watchable experience is to the US Coast Guard. The PG-13 rated adventure is capped off with a beautifully resounding epilogue that definitely stayed with me. Although fairly predictable and formulaic, this is a wonderful film that will make you laugh, cry, and of course, appreciate the real men and women who serve around the world. The American progressive power metal legends FATES WARNING, considered by many as the true forefathers of the genre, celebrated the 30th anniversary of their "Awaken The Guardian" album with an exclusive headlining live appearance at the 2016 edition of the prestigious sold-out ProgPower USA festival last Saturday September 9th. The band — in its original "Awaken The Guardian" lineup, featuring John Arch (vocals), Jim Matheos (guitar), Frank Aresti (guitar), Joe DiBiase (bass) and Steve Zimmerman (drums) took the Progpower stage around 9:45PM amongst the clamoring of an ecstatic audience packing every single corner of the Center Stage.
Despite being only the second time Fates Warning performed an old-school set with Arch on vocals (They played earlier this year in Europe at the KEEP IT TRUE Festival) the band sounded tight as hell. The intricate wildly shifting songs with fluid time signature changes, brutally powerful yet amazingly melodic all the while; the great moments of technicality with a perennial dose of melody, the head-banging riffs in songs like “Guardian” or “Valley of the Dolls”, the odd, jazzy rolls & fluid drum patterns, the ominously burbled bass lines: they served it all with the ease and straightforwardness only real masters of their crafts can do. It was pure magic, music that makes you travel through timeless and ethereal dimensions. And what can I say about John Arch’s vocals? Despite his incredible voice was dormant for years, it hasn’t aged a bit. He still sings (better said wails) like a possessed, giving his spectral tones a particular level of sensitivity. He sang every note to its limits and twisted and turned in every possible direction. It speaks volumes of how great he is, that he had the energy to put on a performance like that in music this demanding and at his age. He commanded the audience with his charismatic presence and his humble attitude, profusely thanking the fans for being present that night. And his delivery on "Guardian" was simply otherworldly. A soul crushing and absolutely emotionally charged performance.

The crowd was delighted and euphoric, singing in a feverish elation and thundering applauses. Mike Portnoy, his wife Marlene and his son Max were in the audience seated three seats away from me, and I could see him drumming in the air along with the music. It was truly a one of a kind spectacle, one I will forever cherish in my memories while I live. Fates Warning was a truly special band in their prime, the likes of which only a bare handful of other bands in history can match, and we had a glimpse at it that night.

The American progressive power metal legends FATES WARNING, considered by many as the true forefathers of the genre, celebrated the 30th anniversary of their "Awaken The Guardian" album with an exclusive headlining live appearance at the 2016 edition of the prestigious sold-out ProgPower USA festival last Saturday September 9th. The band — in its original "Awaken The Guardian" lineup, featuring John Arch (vocals), Jim Matheos (guitar), Frank Aresti (guitar), Joe DiBiase (bass) and Steve Zimmerman (drums) took the Progpower stage around 9:45PM amongst the clamoring of an ecstatic audience packing every single corner of the Center Stage.
Despite being only the second time Fates Warning performed an old-school set with Arch on vocals (They played earlier this year in Europe at the KEEP IT TRUE Festival) the band sounded tight as hell. The intricate wildly shifting songs with fluid time signature changes, brutally powerful yet amazingly melodic all the while; the great moments of technicality with a perennial dose of melody, the head-banging riffs in songs like “Guardian” or “Valley of the Dolls”, the odd, jazzy rolls & fluid drum patterns, the ominously burbled bass lines: they served it all with the ease and straightforwardness only real masters of their crafts can do. It was pure magic, music that makes you travel through timeless and ethereal dimensions. And what can I say about John Arch’s vocals? Despite his incredible voice was dormant for years, it hasn’t aged a bit. He still sings (better said wails) like a possessed, giving his spectral tones a particular level of sensitivity. He sang every note to its limits and twisted and turned in every possible direction. It speaks volumes of how great he is, that he had the energy to put on a performance like that in music this demanding and at his age. He commanded the audience with his charismatic presence and his humble attitude, profusely thanking the fans for being present that night. And his delivery on "Guardian" was simply otherworldly. A soul crushing and absolutely emotionally charged performance.
