Woman dupes police into letting her go free

The woman who allegedly posed as another inmate to walk free from Cairns Watch House has been charged after she was found late on Wednesday evening.

The 18-year-old woman had walked free on Monday after she assumed the identity of another woman who had been in custody, police said.

Police said the women were "similar in appearance".

She has been charged with one count of escaping lawful custody and was due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Queensland police have been left red-faced after a woman posed as another inmate to walk free from the Cairns Watch House.

The 18-year-old woman assumed the identity of another woman who had been in custody, and was subsequently released, to escape the watch house on Monday.

Police say the women were known to each other, were similar in appearance and were occupying the same cell.
