Any Major Disco Vol. 4
Tuesday, July 12, saw the 37th anniversary of the notorious “Disco Demolition Night” at Chicago’s Comskey Park, a night I have discussed with Any Major Disco Vol. 1, and touched on Any Major Disco Vol. 3 (which focussed more on disco as a vehicle for the assertion of gay identity and driver for later black dominance of pop). To mark the anniversary, here is a seriously funky mix of disco tracks — the sort of disco the more discerning of the mob at Comiskey Park might have appreciated, had they opened their hearts and ears.
So, in memory of all that was good about disco, put on your dancing shoes and shake those hips — Travolta moves not required.

It took me awhile but I came around to disco, Dude. Problem is when I play it I get those looks and comments. In 1975 I was working in a hospital in Boston. One of the orderlies who proclaimed himself the queen of drag came in one evening and told us all about the night before at the club. Everyone had danced the Hustle all night long. He even showed us the steps in the nurse’s lounge. He was usually staid and proper while on the job but that night his flamboyant side shone through. Disco madness had caught hold of him and it wouldn’t let go.

Some great disco tracks there. Always loved The Isley Brothers “It’s A Disco Night” & The Miracles “Love Machine” but also delighted to see Heatwave’s “Too Hot To Handle”(which came from an album that also featured the glorious “Ain’t No Half Steppin'” and “Boogie Nights” – not bad for a debut album!)
Sadly there’s a lot of sublime SOUL, Funk, Jazz-funk, Rock, Pop and Gospel tracks that some “criticals” qualifies as “disco”. In Spain in the 70’s for many public and criticals “Disco” signifies “stupid, brainless, intrascendent dance music” and people hated any music not necessary conceived only for dance with, but all music you can ALSO dance with. I was many times “accused” as I was a true Philly Soul lover and never understand how a gospel number as “Put Your Hands Together” by The O’Jays or a jazz number as “Malorie” by Billy Paul can be classified as “Disco” (!!!???). They don’t made difference between Boney M, Baccara or Village People and danceable (apart from “heard able”) soul or R&B artists like The Trammps or Archie Bell & The Drells…!
