Beesotted are blogging around Marseilles for Euro 2016. As we were getting in the mood for the France game, we witnessed 15 to 20 French Ultras attack England fans sitting outside a bar only a few minutes walk from the Vieux Port.
The attack was in an area away from the centre of the trouble and was full of fans sitting peacefully having a drink not causing any bother at all and families. The attack was totally unprovoked and looked pre-meditated.
Only 10 minutes earlier, samba dancers were entertaining crowds in the same bars - making the whole experience even more bizzarre.

Deepening poverty and unemployment in Marseille is causing murder and drug-related gang crime to spiral out of control. Locals say enough is enough and the authorities are now fending off calls to send the army.
"Solidarity! All together! All together!", shout the mothers of Marseille as they demand an end to the bloodshed that's engulfing their communities. "I'm here because I'm angry. I lost a nephew and I'm saying the violence must stop." Despite being Europe's Capital of Culture, Marseille is also a capital of murder. Its impoverished estates have become neglected, crumbling ghettos and police are faced with a new, very violent form of crime. "We don't want to work like this in misery. Most work in drugs. What do you do if there are no jobs?", says Hassan. People are fighting back with protests, but creating jobs and opportunity is impossible at a time of deep austerity. "When you can buy weapons like a pair of trainers, I think that country is in danger."

Sur le pont D'avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars!

Historically, it was the most important trade center in the region and functioned as the main trading port for the French empire. Learn more about the history of Marseille here. This city is currently the largest commercial port in France, and is the largest city on the southern French coast of the Mediterranean. Located between Montpellier and Nice, Marseille is also the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm to hot, mostly dry summers. Marseille has a vast public transportation system involving trams, metro, and busses, all under an easy ticketing system. There is also a very sophisticated bike rental system, which many argue is the best way to see the city. Residents of Marseille are known as Marseillais.
This article is the first part of a two-part series featuring Marseille; in it you will learn about some of the most popular destinations in town.
Vieux-Port
Vieux-Port, meaning “old port” in English, is the top destination in Marseille for tourists. If you’re only in town for a couple days and want to see everything, this is where you should start. It is often cited as the place where civilization began, as it was the site of one of the first Greek settlements in 600 B.C. By 2013 Marseille had transformed this section of the city into a mainly pedestrian area, making it easier for tourists and locals to experience the old port as it had been in centuries past. The Vieux-Port as well as the Chateau d’If was featured in Alexandre Dumas’s landmark work, The Count of Monte Cristo. In its heyday in 1854, the Old Port had a capacity of between 1,000 and 1,200 ships, and roughly 18,000 ships per year. It lost relevance with the popularity of steamships, as its 6 meter depth was too shallow for the ships to enter. The entire region was devastated by the Nazi incursion in 1943, but in 1948, Fernand Pouillon was put in charge of reconstructing what you see today.
Nowadays, the Vieux-Port is well-known for its diverse markets and hand-crafted souvenirs. For a look at what is essentially the “new port” in Marseille, check on the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille further north-west.
Museums in Marseille
Marseille is also known for its astonishing selection of museums. Although we discuss a few in this video, make sure to check out the rest on your next trip. You’ll find the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations on the north side of the port. This museum features a fascinating comparison on all aspects of Mediterranean cultures. It takes a historical perspective on the development of Marseille and is a great showcase for the evolution of the south of France. Another great museum is the Marine and Economy Museum, which is dedicated entirely to sea trade, especially the role Marseille played in the expansion of European sea trade.
The Marseille Town Hall, while not precisely a museum, is a spectacular example of seventeenth century architecture. It has been a meeting place for the city’s council since the Middle Ages. Other architectural examples include the St. Nicholas Fort and the St. Jean Fort at the mouth of the Vieux-Port. The St. Nicholas Fort is famous for its great views of the port, and both forts were built by King Louis XIV following a revolt against their governor by the citizens of Marseille.

Marseille Ultras' Unprovoked Attack on England Fans | Euro 2016 France
Beesotted are blogging around Marseilles for Euro 2016. As we were getting in the mood for the France game, we witnessed 15 to 20 French Ultras attack England fans sitting outside a bar only a few minutes walk from the Vieux Port. The attack was in an area away from the centre of the trouble and was full of fans sitting peacefully having a drink not causing any bother at all and families. The attack was totally unprovoked and looked pre-meditated. Only 10 minutes earlier, samba dancers were entertaining crowds in the same bars - making the whole experience even more bizzarre. Sur le pont D'avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars!

Marseille is the second-largest city in France, after Paris, boasting a population of 850,000. Historically, it was the most important trade center in the region and functioned as the main trading port for the French empire. Learn more about the history of Marseille here. This city is currently the largest commercial port in France, and is the largest city on the southern French coast of the Mediterranean. Located between Montpellier and Nice, Marseille is also the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm to hot, mostly dry summers. Marseille has a vast public transportation system involving trams, metro, and busses, all under an easy ticketing system. There is also a very sophisticated bike rental system, which many argue is the best way to see the city. Residents of Marseille are known as Marseillais.

Vieux-Port
Vieux-Port, meaning “old port” in English, is the top destination in Marseille for tourists. If you’re only in town for a couple days and want to see everything, this is where you should start. It is often cited as the place where civilization began, as it was the site of one of the first Greek settlements in 600 B.C. By 2013 Marseille had transformed this section of the city into a mainly pedestrian area, making it easier for tourists and locals to experience the old port as it had been in centuries past. The Vieux-Port as well as the Chateau d’If was featured in Alexandre Dumas’s landmark work, The Count of Monte Cristo. In its heyday in 1854, the Old Port had a capacity of between 1,000 and 1,200 ships, and roughly 18,000 ships per year. It lost relevance with the popularity of steamships, as its 6 meter depth was too shallow for the ships to enter. The entire region was devastated by the Nazi incursion in 1943, but in 1948, Fernand Pouillon was put in charge of reconstructing what you see today.
Nowadays, the Vieux-Port is well-known for its diverse markets and hand-crafted souvenirs. For a look at what is essentially the “new port” in Marseille, check on the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille further north-west.
Museums in Marseille
Marseille is also known for its astonishing selection of museums. Although we discuss a few in this video, make sure to check out the rest on your next trip. You’ll find the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations on the north side of the port. This museum features a fascinating comparison on all aspects of Mediterranean cultures. It takes a historical perspective on the development of Marseille and is a great showcase for the evolution of the south of France. Another great museum is the Marine and Economy Museum, which is dedicated entirely to sea trade, especially the role Marseille played in the expansion of European sea trade.
The Marseille Town Hall, while not precisely a museum, is a spectacular example of seventeenth century architecture. It has been a meeting place for the city’s council since the Middle Ages. Other architectural examples include the St. Nicholas Fort and the St. Jean Fort at the mouth of the Vieux-Port. The St. Nicholas Fort is famous for its great views of the port, and both forts were built by King Louis XIV following a revolt against their governor by the citizens of Marseille.

Maddy: "Oui, Oui."
King of the North! Yah! We're in Marseille, going to grab the bags and head to the city center. You can take a shuttle for 8 euro over here so we're going to the city center, drop off our bags at the train station and have some lunch.
So we got our bags, I was just worried about searching for a Starbucks in Marseille City but no need, Starbucks at the airport! Going to cop the mug now.
And there it is, and they got Lyon! ...YES! So Marseille Airport has France, Marseille, little expresso mugs and Lyon. That's freaking awesome, I don't have to go on a search for it now.
The airport shuttle to the city center of Marseille will take you about 25 minutes and will cost you 8 euro. Visit the airport website Marseille.aeroport.fr to book your shuttle in advance.
We're in Marseille at the train station (Gare de Marseille Saint Charles) and we're going to leave our bags here for a couple of hours and then go have some lunch and check out Notre Dame de la Garde. Got to drop the bags off real quick. It's over this way so come follow me.... KING OF THE NORTH!

Me and Pops are here in Marseille looking around, check out the Vieux Port. Were going to walk over this way and go kick it.

Maddy: We're in Francois.
We are in Les Echevins right now and having red wine, were here for lunch. Go it off of TripAdvisor, they rated it high so I figured we'd try it out and we're going to check out Notre Dame de la Garde after. So we got our Appetizers, I got the squid with a little salad and some bread. Maddy got the Chicken Caesar Salad. First meal in France, Bon a petit!
So our main course just came in and we got this off of Trip Advisor so we get 20% off and it's like a course deal. I have the Risotto with Shrimp and some squid and maybe some scallops.
And Maddy got the... what did you get Maddy?
Maddy: Steak, beef with french fries and a little bit of salad.
Looks Good!
Alot of French Restaurants have English translated menus.
First French meal, Fantastic!
Maddy: We have leftovers.
We've got leftovers for the hotel. Restaurant Les Echevins, I recommend it, it's like off the beaten path corner. Away from the tourist traps (It's reasonable). TripAdvisor gives you 20 percent off and the bill wasn't bad at all so try it out!
Were here at the Vieux Port, Center of the city of Marseille. I just had a great lunch, I'm about five pounds heavier now and check out all the yachts. Marseille is a big seafood town so alot of food here is very fresh. I had some of the most fresh squid I've ever had. So let's go explore!
There's the little Petit Train (Les petits trains de Marseille). A round trip to Notre Dame de la Garde on the Les Petit Train will cost you about 8 euro and take about 3 hours. So me and Maddy are on the Les Petit Train to go to Notre Dame de la Garde which is featured on the Starbucks mug. Found it at the airport, don't have to look for one in town.
We're up at the top of the hill overlooking the city of Marseille with Maddy.
We're here at Notre Dame de la Garde, look at the view of Marseille from here and the French Riviera right there, turn around up to the Notre Dame de la Garde. Very beautiful scenery.
After a quick photo op it was back down the hill to the Vieux Port. The les Petit Train leaves every 20 minutes from the exact same spot (at Notre Dame de la Garde parking lot).
So we were here for about 4 and a half hours and we utilized our time right. Had a great lunch, went to the Vieux Port, took the le Petit Train up to Notre Dame de la Garde and now were back and got some Marseille Soap.
Maddy: For you Mom.

Well it's Au Revoir from Marseille. Next on Jaycation, we take a boat ride over to Monaco. We visit the famous Monte Carlo Casino and check out the streets of the famous (Monaco) Grand Prix.

So our main course just came in and we got this off of Trip Advisor so we get 20% off and it's like a course deal. I have the Risotto with Shrimp and some squid and maybe some scallops.
And Maddy got the... what did you get Maddy?
Maddy: Steak, beef with french fries and a little bit of salad.
Looks Good!
Alot of French Restaurants have English translated menus.
First French meal, Fantastic!
Maddy: We have leftovers.
We've got leftovers for the hotel. Restaurant Les Echevins, I recommend it, it's like off the beaten path corner. Away from the tourist traps (It's reasonable). TripAdvisor gives you 20 percent off and the bill wasn't bad at all so try it out!
Were here at the Vieux Port, Center of the city of Marseille. I just had a great lunch, I'm about five pounds heavier now and check out all the yachts. Marseille is a big seafood town so alot of food here is very fresh. I had some of the most fresh squid I've ever had. So let's go explore!
There's the little Petit Train (Les petits trains de Marseille). A round trip to Notre Dame de la Garde on the Les Petit Train will cost you about 8 euro and take about 3 hours. So me and Maddy are on the Les Petit Train to go to Notre Dame de la Garde which is featured on the Starbucks mug. Found it at the airport, don't have to look for one in town.
We're up at the top of the hill overlooking the city of Marseille with Maddy.
We're here at Notre Dame de la Garde, look at the view of Marseille from here and the French Riviera right there, turn around up to the Notre Dame de la Garde. Very beautiful scenery.
After a quick photo op it was back down the hill to the Vieux Port. The les Petit Train leaves every 20 minutes from the exact same spot (at Notre Dame de la Garde parking lot).
So we were here for about 4 and a half hours and we utilized our time right. Had a great lunch, went to the Vieux Port, took the le Petit Train up to Notre Dame de la Garde and now were back and got some Marseille Soap.

Well it's Au Revoir from Marseille. Next on Jaycation, we take a boat ride over to Monaco. We visit the famous Monte Carlo Casino and check out the streets of the famous (Monaco) Grand Prix.

Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’ are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

Ruptly will be LIVE from the Marseille fan zone on Thursday, July 7, as football fans gather to watch the Euro 2016 semi-final match between France and Germany.
The two teams will play the match in Stade Velodrome at 19:00 GMT (21:00 CEST).
France progressed to the semi-final after defeating Iceland 5-2 in Paris on July 3 in the quarter-final, while Germany beat Italy 6-5 in Bordeaux the day before.

The beautiful port city of Marseilles was once a symbol of multiculturalism in France. Now plagued by gangs and crime, it has become central to the heated election debates around immigration and security.
Generations of immigrants have helped to shape the character of Marseilles and a third of the population are Muslim. But recently an explosion in violent crime has torn apart this melting pot, exacerbated by the recent killings in Toulouse by Islamist, Mohammed Merah, and Sarkozy's controversial anti-halal campaign. "An election doesn't justify being demagogic. It is dividing France, playing people off against each other." In the midst of an ongoing economic crisis and with the election only a week away, many remain sceptical about France's unity and the future prospects of its people. "We need real solutions to the problems here", says Nassurdine Haidari, one of Marseilles' vice mayors.

Pour tenter d’enrayer cette escalade, le gouvernement a renforcé les effectifs de policiers et de gendarmes et mis au point une stratégie de reconquête des cités. Mais les trafics et la violence continuent de gangrener la ville. Et quand des responsables, de tous bords, tentent de récupérer ces problèmes politiquement, ils sont rattrapés par des scandales.
