EU leaders meet without UK to discuss Brexit
영국총리 빠진 EU 정상회담
Leaders of the European Union are gathering in Brussels... with no British presence --- that's a first in over 40 years.
They're meeting for informal talks about the U.K.'s exit from the bloc... but to discuss how to move forward without the Brits... with the priority on the EU and not Britain.
Meanwhile, Scotland has made clear that it wants to remain as part of the 28-nation bloc.
Oh Jung-hee reports.
European Union leaders, for the first time in over 43 years, met in Brussels on Wednesday,... WITHOUT Britain.
This time, it was not about what the UK should do, but about how the EU should proceed with the union after Brexit.
"I think it's not about him today. He and Britain know what to do after what they did. Today it's about us, what we are going to do, about our unity, and about preparations for the transitional period."
Most leaders rejected having negotiations with the UK before it invokes Article 50.
But the UK has been reluctant to activate it,... because in order to reach a successful compromise of gaining BOTH full access to the single market AND control over migration,... two years of negotiation before automatic exit is not enough.
"We won't start negotiations before article 50 is triggered. I do not feel like having the British government decide when we have given them enough to trigger article 50. First article 50, then we'll talk."
Meanwhile, the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon met with European Parliament President Martin Schulz.
It was one of the meetings she had organized with leading EU officials on her visit to Brussels,... to make it clear that Scotland is against Brexit.
"This is very much an initial meeting of a series of meetings in Brussels today so that people understand that Scotland, unlike other parts of the United Kingdom, does not want to leave the European Union."
Scotland started to walk its own path to remain in the 28-nation bloc.
Later in the day, the first minister plans to meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
It remains to be seen how the future of the "United Kingdom" will play out,... amid its domestic turmoil over Brexit.
