Mosaics 101: Mosaic Garden Rocks
How about some colorful mosaic rocks for your garden? This is a great beginner project! There’s no wrong way to make them. You just pick out your tiles and glue them onto your rock. The only thing you need to pay attention to is how close together your tiles are.
Once you have all your tiles glued onto the rocks, it is time to mix up the grout. Mixing grout is easy. We’ll show you how. Just follow the directions on your package of grout to know how much water to add to your grout. We actually like to start with the water in our mixing container and then add the grout to it. Our grout called for 1 part water to 7 parts grout. Mix the grout and water together until it is the texture of natural peanut butter. If it is too dry, add a little more water.
Once the grout is mixed you have 15 minutes to use it. That means if you want to tint the grout, do it now and don’t dilly-dally! Just squirt a little craft paint into the grout and mix together. We used black acrylic craft paint to get a dark gray grout. We like a grout color that sets off the colors of the tiles.
To grout your rocks, smear the grout right over the tiles and press it into all the spaces between the tiles. Wipe off any excess grout and let the rock sit for 30 minutes. Now you can buff the surfaces of the tiles with a damp paper towel.
Let the mosaic garden rock dry over night, then paint a thin layer of mosaic grout sealer over it. Let dry then place in the garden!
Here Are The Tools And Materials Needed To Make Mosaic Garden Rocks
Materials (For One Rock)
1 rock, about 4” to 5”
Variety of colorful tiles
White sanded grout
Black acrylic craft paint
Mosaic grout sealer
Clear silicone adhesive
Other Supplies
Plastic disposable container to mix the grout in
Putty knife or wooden paint stirring stick
Sponge
Gloves
Measuring spoon
Plastic cup for water
Paper towels

Mosaics 101: How To Break China for Mosaics
Broken china mosaics are so charming. In this lesson, you will learn how to use tile nippers and wheel cutters to break china plates into tiles for mosaics. To get started making mosaics with broken china, go to the thrift store and collect plates with beautiful flowers and patterns around the edge. Get a few very inexpensive china pieces to practice with too.
You can use wheel cutters or tile nippers to cut the plates into mosaic tesserae. Tile nippers are good for large cuts. Wheel cutters make more precise “bites” but they are limited in the width of plate they can nip or cut.
To use either wheel cutters or tile nippers to break patterned china plates into mosaic tiles, you will need safety glasses to protect your eyes and leather gloves to protect your hands. China breaks off with tiny glass shards that can easy poke through skin. Please be careful!
We like to break the china with the tile nippers over a cardboard box to capture the broken pieces and shards. Start by grasping the plate in one hand then squeeze the nippers onto the edge of the plate. It will start a crack that will break the china for you. If you choke back on the handles of the nippers it is easier to squeeze them onto the china plate. Take a smaller piece that you have broken off and again squeeze the nippers on the edge to break it into smaller pieces. Continue on until you have broken china tiles the right size for your mosaic.
You can also use the wheel nippers to cut the china plate. This is a good tool for cutting out pictures and roses from the center of a plate to reuse in a mosaic. The wheel cutters can bite away the china edges you don’t want leaving the image in the center.

Katy Galbraith, mosaic artist in Crieff, Perthshire, works in her bothy in her garden at Galvelmore House (B&B;).
Working in my dry-stone lined bothy in the garden, with views over the hills, I am frequently inspired by this landscape which is reflected in my mosaics. Flowers in abundance feature in the majority of my exhibition pieces, as well as in private commissions. While many of my pieces are considered 'decorative art', I also enjoy making mosaics with a more practical purpose such as mirrors, table tops and garden items.
In producing my mosaics, I aim to be true to myself and my interest in recycling and sustainability by incorporating many recycled materials, including those representing me and my home town of Crieff, Perthshire (Crieff Pottery whisky jugs; remnants from a local fused glass artist, wine bottle glass and broken car windows for example). The surface used for many of my mosaics originates from discarded kitchen units. Recycled materials stimulate many of my ideas in mosaic pieces that I have done, and as a consequence my greenhouse is now filled with china, glass and decorative ceramic ornaments rather than plants!

There's more to mosaics than meets the eye. The design and arrangement of hundreds or thousands of tesserae (stone or glass cubes) was a complex process involving meticulous planning. However, before a mosaicist began any project, a solid foundation was necessary. From there, the artist could create a work of art that could last for centuries. In this video, a master mosaicist from the Chicago Mosaic School demonstrates the art of mosaic making by recreating a section of the Art Institute of Chicago's 5th century Byzantine mosaic fragment with a Man Leading a Giraffe.

you MUST check this out, these tiles are awesome and great for using to make mosaics when tile or glass might be too heavy... these are nice and light weight so you could mosaic a journal cover or even a greeting card! Just think of the possibilities!!

Mosaic
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It is a technique of decorative art or interior decoration. Most mosaics are made of small, flat, roughly square, pieces of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae; but some, especially floor mosaics, may also be made of small rounded pieces of stone, and called "pebble mosaics".
Mosaic has a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Pebble mosaics were made in Tiryns in Mycenean Greece; mosaics with patterns and pictures became widespread in classical times, both in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Early Christian basilicas from the 4th century onwards were decorated with wall and ceiling mosaics. Mosaic art flourished in the Byzantine Empire from the 6th to the 15th centuries; that tradition was adopted by the Norman kingdom in Sicily in the 12th century, by eastern-influenced Venice, and among the Rus in Ukraine. Mosaic fell out of fashion in the Renaissance, though artists like Raphael continued to practise the old technique. Roman and Byzantine influence led Jews to decorate 5th and 6th century synagogues in the Middle East with floor mosaics.

There's more to mosaics than meets the eye. The design and arrangement of hundreds or thousands of tesserae (stone or glass cubes) was a complex process involving meticulous planning. However, before a mosaicist began any project, a solid foundation was necessary. From there, the artist could create a work of art that could last for centuries. In this video, a master mosaicist from the Chicago Mosaic School demonstrates the art of mosaic making by recreating a section of the Art Institute of Chicago's 5th century Byzantine mosaic fragment with a Man Leading a Giraffe. This video was produced with the generous support of a Long Range Fund grant provided by the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was created for LaunchPad, a program of digital interpretive materials that supplement the viewing of works of art on display in the Art Institute of Chicago's galleries. -

In this lesson, you will learn how to use tile nippers and wheel cutters to break china plates into tiles for mosaics. To get started making mosaics with broken china, go to the thrift store and collect plates with beautiful flowers and patterns around the edge. Get a few very inexpensive china pieces to practice with too. You can use wheel cutters or tile nippers to cut the plates into mosaic tesserae. Tile nippers are good for large cuts. Wheel cutters make more precise “bites” but they are limited in the width of plate they can nip or cut. Making Mosaics with Recycled Materials
Katy Galbraith, mosaic artist in Crieff, Perthshire, works in her bothy in her garden at Galvelmore House (B&B;). Working in my dry-stone lined bothy in the garden, with views over the hills, I am frequently inspired by this landscape which is reflected in my mosaics. Mosaics 101: Mosaic Garden Rocks
How about some colorful mosaic rocks for your garden? This is a great beginner project! There’s no wrong way to make them. You just pick out your tiles and glue them onto your rock. The only thing you need to pay attention to is how close together your tiles are.
Once you have all your tiles glued onto the rocks, it is time to mix up the grout. Mixing grout is easy. We’ll show you how. Just follow the directions on your package of grout to know how much water to add to your grout. We actually like to start with the water in our mixing container and then add the grout to it. Our grout called for 1 part water to 7 parts grout. Mix the grout and water together until it is the texture of natural peanut butter. If it is too dry, add a little more water.
Once the grout is mixed you have 15 minutes to use it. That means if you want to tint the grout, do it now and don’t dilly-dally! Just squirt a little craft paint into the grout and mix together. We used black acrylic craft paint to get a dark gray grout. We like a grout color that sets off the colors of the tiles.
To grout your rocks, smear the grout right over the tiles and press it into all the spaces between the tiles. Wipe off any excess grout and let the rock sit for 30 minutes. Now you can buff the surfaces of the tiles with a damp paper towel.
Let the mosaic garden rock dry over night, then paint a thin layer of mosaic grout sealer over it. Let dry then place in the garden!

Materials (For One Rock)
1 rock, about 4” to 5”
Variety of colorful tiles
White sanded grout
Black acrylic craft paint
Mosaic grout sealer
Clear silicone adhesive
Other Supplies

Sponge
Gloves
Measuring spoon

To use either wheel cutters or tile nippers to break patterned china plates into mosaic tiles, you will need safety glasses to protect your eyes and leather gloves to protect your hands. China breaks off with tiny glass shards that can easy poke through skin. Please be careful!
We like to break the china with the tile nippers over a cardboard box to capture the broken pieces and shards. Start by grasping the plate in one hand then squeeze the nippers onto the edge of the plate. It will start a crack that will break the china for you. If you choke back on the handles of the nippers it is easier to squeeze them onto the china plate. Take a smaller piece that you have broken off and again squeeze the nippers on the edge to break it into smaller pieces. Continue on until you have broken china tiles the right size for your mosaic.
You can also use the wheel nippers to cut the china plate. This is a good tool for cutting out pictures and roses from the center of a plate to reuse in a mosaic. The wheel cutters can bite away the china edges you don’t want leaving the image in the center.

If you choke back on the handles of the nippers it is easier to squeeze them onto the china plate. Take a smaller piece that you have broken off and again squeeze the nippers on the edge to break it into smaller pieces. Continue on until you have broken china tiles the right size for your mosaic.
You can also use the wheel nippers to cut the china plate. This is a good tool for cutting out pictures and roses from the center of a plate to reuse in a mosaic. The wheel cutters can bite away the china edges you don’t want leaving the image in the center.

Katy Galbraith, mosaic artist in Crieff, Perthshire, works in her bothy in her garden at Galvelmore House (B&B;).
Working in my dry-stone lined bothy in the garden, with views over the hills, I am frequently inspired by this landscape which is reflected in my mosaics. Flowers in abundance feature in the majority of my exhibition pieces, as well as in private commissions. While many of my pieces are considered 'decorative art', I also enjoy making mosaics with a more practical purpose such as mirrors, table tops and garden items.
In producing my mosaics, I aim to be true to myself and my interest in recycling and sustainability by incorporating many recycled materials, including those representing me and my home town of Crieff, Perthshire (Crieff Pottery whisky jugs; remnants from a local fused glass artist, wine bottle glass and broken car windows for example). The surface used for many of my mosaics originates from discarded kitchen units. Recycled materials stimulate many of my ideas in mosaic pieces that I have done, and as a consequence my greenhouse is now filled with china, glass and decorative ceramic ornaments rather than plants!

However, before a mosaicist began any project, a solid foundation was necessary. From there, the artist could create a work of art that could last for centuries.
