One issue the Redskins want to avoid is tipping off their coverages. It's another reason why they're reluctant to have one corner isolated on a receiver. Add it to the reasons why they didn't have Josh Norman simply cover Antonio Brown Monday night. If Norman is lined up opposite Brown, it would signal man coverage and the Redskins like to mix up their looks. They could clearly do it more if they wanted, but it's among the reasons they're reluctant to do so, coach Jay Gruden said.

Ryan Fitzpatrick acknowledges his career statistics against Rex Ryan are poor but adds that his entire career numbers aren't "competing with Hall of Famers." A self-aware man.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said he regrets not going for a fourth-and-1 on the first drive of the game Monday night, with the ball at the Pittsburgh 40-yard line. The Redskins did force a three-and-out and got the ball back at their 33-yard line. But, Gruden said, "it was a scoring opportunity squandered." Later, the Redskins failed to pick up a fourth-and-6 at the Steeler 38 trailing by a point. "Two bad decisions," Gruden said.

49ers coach Chip Kelly said OL Anthony Davis will continue to work at guard because backups need to have versatility but Davis' "main position" is tackle. Andrew Tiller started at right guard against the Rams on Monday night.

How great is Saturday's schedule? This is the first time ever that AP No. 1, 2 and 3 each play a true road game vs a ranked opponent in the same week. Only once have No. 1, 2 and 3 all lost on same day - New Year's Day 1966.

David Shaw "feels very good about Bryce Love playing" against USC, and he's not completely ready to rule Harrison Phillips out -- though "it's not likely" that the DL will play. The two players' statuses remain virtually unchanged from last week.

Reports portrayed Wally Backman as being insubordinate, asserting he disregarded instructions to bat Brandon Nimmo leadoff and to use Michael Conforto against left-handed pitching. Backman on WFAN called those allegations hogwash. He said Conforto started in 31 of 33 games while in the Pacific Coast League and pinch hit in the other two games. Backman added that Nimmo batted first or second in 84 of 90 games this season with Las Vegas. "Whoever put that out there, the source within the system, they lied," Backman said. "And that's the part that pisses me off."

Wally Backman reiterated Tuesday that he left on his own, feeling disrespected. "It didn't look like there was any future for me," he said in an interview with WFAN. Backman said he played a large role in steering James Loney, Rene Rivera and Jose Reyes to the organization. "When you work for an organization and do everything, you want to be respected for what you do," Backman said. "I just felt for my time being there the respect wasn't there. I could be wrong. They could say different."

Bills coach Rex Ryan on whether CB Darrelle Revis, whom he coached with the Jets, has slipped: "(Laughs) If he has, we know he's coming from the mountain top. I don't know how far that is. In my opinion, I think he's a hell of a football player still. Like I said, if he's coming down, he's coming down from the very, very top."

St. Lucie manager Luis Rojas has joined the big-league club for the remainder of the regular season. Rojas' club was the lone Mets affiliate to reach the postseason.

LeSean McCoy on Bills starting 0-1: "We can't panic. I feel like a lot of people are panicking, like, 'Oh, we lost the first game.' Yeah, we lost the first game. Offense played bad. We gotta move on. It's a long season. And this is the type of league it is. We'll come out here this week and if we have a great game, you won't even talk about next week. That's how it works."

The Bills listed Sammy Watkins as "did not participate" on their Tuesday injury report, which is required to indicate their status as if they held a full practice. The Bills held a walkthrough practice today and Watkins was in uniform walking off the field afterward. He was inside, not in uniform, working with a trainer while reporters were present.

While things didn't go well on the field last weekend for KU, the Jayhawks did make a positive impression on three-star outside linebacker Javaris Russell of Grenada (Mississippi) High School. The 6-1, 195-pound Russell was on campus for an official visit, and he gave KU high marks. Russell was previously committed to Mississippi State but backed off his pledge to the Bulldogs late last week. Russell has offers from Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi State, Cal, Cincinnati, Memphis and others.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had high praise for TE Marellus Bennett, who played 69 of 71 offensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Cardinals. Despite having just 3 catches for 14 yards, Bennett was a big factor as a blocker. "We gained a lot of production out of the things that he did, regardless of whether they showed up on the (personal) statistics or not," McDaniels said.

Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is chatting with position coach Kevin Patullo. Maybe they're talking about a way to solve the Rex Hex. Fitzpatrick is 2-8 in his career against Rex Ryan-coached defenses.
