Premiere: Katie Dey, Flood Network
In 2015, Australian recording artist Katie Dey
experienced a sudden wave of attention that saw her debut, “a 21-minute
sugar-rush” of demented bedroom pop, sell out in a single day from the
Orchid Tapes site and land on a number of year-end lists. With Flood Network (out on Joy Void), she furthers that highly distinctive sonic palette—best distilled by The Fader:
“jumpy melodies, inhuman voices, and what feels like a million layers
of texture… yet always sad and beautiful and eerily familiar, as if it
had been your favorite song on some alternate plane of existence.” The
formula thrives in the full-length format: hypnotic, exploratory
interludes, outros, and reprises give the sweeter, more structured
moments additional space to breath and brighten. A hyper-color universe,
certainly all her own.

James Brown Is Dead (Rock Radio Mix feat. Chris Randall) [L.A. Style]
While I’ve really liked every single version of this tune I’ve heard so far (including, of course, the original, which is one of my favourite oldskool techno/rave tunes of all time), I have to admit I’ve really, rally grown fond of this (apparently obscure) little mix that I found off of the 9-track Maxi single, that throws some guitar licks behind the rave synths (and some seriously funky wah- wah shit towards the end), and original vocals by Chris Randall of Micronauts and Sister Machine Gun fame, along with a verse from the Rap mix. I am pretty sure this version only exists because someone told L.A. Style that if they wanted to release the single in the U.S., it needed to appeal to the average American audience, and god bless that person because without them, this forgotten curiositiy wouldn’t exist.
