Stanley Allison "Stan" Rogers (1949--1983) is one of Canada's most highly regarded and fondly remembered folk singers and songwriters. Rogers was noted for his rich, baritone voice and his finely crafted, traditional-sounding songs frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes. Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 on the ground at the Greater Cincinnati Airport at the age of 33. His influence on Canadian folk music has been deep and lasting.
The "Northwest Passage" written and performed by Rogers, appears on an album of the same name released in 1981. The song is considered one of the classic songs in Canadian music history. In the 2005 "CBC Radio One" series "50 Tracks: The Canadian Version", "Northwest Passage" ranked fourth, behind only Neil Young's "Heart of Gold"; Barenaked Ladies' "If I Had $1,000,000"; and Ian and Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds". When CBC's Peter Gzowski asked Canadians to pick an alternate national anthem to "Oh Canada", "Northwest Passage" was the overwhelming choice. Former Canadian Governor General Adrienne Clarkson quoted the song both in her first official address and in her speech at the dedication of the new Canadian embassy in Berlin.
Franklin Expedition
In 1845, a two-ship expedition led by Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) sailed to the Canadian Arctic to chart the last unknown swaths of the Northwest Passage. Confidence was high, given there was less than 500 km (310 mi) of unexplored Arctic mainland coast by then. When the ships failed to return, search parties explored the Canadian Arctic, resulting in a thorough charting of the region along with a possible passage. Many artifacts from the expedition were found over the next century and a half, including notes that the ships were ice-locked in 1846 near King William Island, about half way through the passage, unable to break free. Franklin died in 1847 and Captain Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier took over command. In 1848, the expedition abandoned ships and tried to escape south across the tundra by sledge. Although some of the crew may not have died until the early 1850s, no evidence has ever been found of any survivors.
Starvation, exposure and scurvy all contributed to the deaths. In 1981, an anthropologist from the University of Alberta examined remains from sites associated with the expedition. Examination of tissue and bone from the frozen bodies of three seamen exhumed from the permafrost of Beechey Island revealed high concentrations of lead in all three bodies (the expedition carried 8,000 tins of food sealed with a lead-based solder). Further research has suggested botulism also caused deaths among crew members. Evidence also confirms that cannibalism was a last resort for some of the crew. Included in this video is a map and summary slide of the known and surmised routes of the Franklin Expedition and locations where remains (as indicators of the crews' escape route) have been discovered. Note that Stan Rogers' "brave Kelso" is in reference to Henry Kelsey (1667-1724), the first known European to have explored Canada's Great Plains.

This is the record of a voyage through the Canadian Arctic along the Northwest Passage.
This Northwest Passage adventure starts from Greenland with visits to Kangerlussuaq on the Sondre Stromfjord, Sisiumiut and Ilulissat on Disko Bay where the Jacobshavn Icefjord spewing out massive icebergs.
Departing Greenland and sailing across the Davis Strait into Baffin Bay, the ship enters the Canadian Arctic and includes:
- Pond Inlet on Baffin Island
- kayaking at Dundas Harbour on Devon Island
- the Marine Bird Sanctuary on Prince Leopold Island
- the Franklin Expedition gravesites on Beechey Island
- passage through Bellot Strait
- an escort through the Franklin Strait by an icebreaker (CCGS Henry Larsen)
- Victory Point on King William Island
- Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island
Along the route there are sightings of humpback whales; pilot whales; harp seals; and polar bears on land, swimming in the ocean and on ice floes.

Northwest Passage
The Northwest Passage is a sea route connecting the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America via waterways through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The various islands of the archipelago are separated from one another and from the Canadian mainland by a series of Arctic waterways collectively known as the Northwest Passages or Northwestern Passages. The Parliament of Canada renamed these waterways the "Canadian Northwest Passage" in a motion that was passed unanimously in December 2009.
Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, it was discovered in 1850 by Robert McClure and first navigated by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen with a small expedition in 1903–1906. Until 2009, the Arctic pack ice prevented regular marine shipping throughout most of the year. Changes in the pack ice (Arctic shrinkage) has rendered the waterways more navigable.
The contested sovereignty claims over the waters may complicate future shipping through the region: the Canadian government considers the Northwestern Passages part of Canadian Internal Waters, but the United States and various European countries maintain they are an international strait and transit passage, allowing free and unencumbered passage. If, as has been claimed, parts of the eastern end of the Passage are barely 15 metres (49 ft) deep, the route's viability as a Euro-Asian shipping route is reduced.

Northwest Passage
Major Robert Rogers organized "Rogers Rangers" to search for the alleged waterway across the United States during the French and Indian War (1754-1759). Helping Rogers, an experienced explorer and Indian fighter, were Hunk Marriner, another experienced Indian fighter, and Langdon Towne, a Harvard graduate who was the map maker. The episodes told the story of their trials and tribulations searching for the Northwest Passage and their battles with both the French and Indians during this war.

Stanley Allison "Stan" Rogers (1949--1983) is one of Canada's most highly regarded and fondly remembered folk singers and songwriters. Rogers was noted for his rich, baritone voice and his finely crafted, traditional-sounding songs frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes. Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 on the ground at the Greater Cincinnati Airport at the age of 33. His influence on Canadian folk music has been deep and lasting.
The "Northwest Passage" written and performed by Rogers, appears on an album of the same name released in 1981. The song is considered one of the classic songs in Canadian music history. In the 2005 "CBC Radio One" series "50 Tracks: The Canadian Version", "Northwest Passage" ranked fourth, behind only Neil Young's "Heart of Gold"; Barenaked Ladies' "If I Had $1,000,000"; and Ian and Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds". When CBC's Peter Gzowski asked Canadians to pick an alternate national anthem to "Oh Canada", "Northwest Passage" was the overwhelming choice. Former Canadian Governor General Adrienne Clarkson quoted the song both in her first official address and in her speech at the dedication of the new Canadian embassy in Berlin.
Franklin Expedition
In 1845, a two-ship expedition led by Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) sailed to the Canadian Arctic to chart the last unknown swaths of the Northwest Passage. Confidence was high, given there was less than 500 km (310 mi) of unexplored Arctic mainland coast by then. When the ships failed to return, search parties explored the Canadian Arctic, resulting in a thorough charting of the region along with a possible passage. Many artifacts from the expedition were found over the next century and a half, including notes that the ships were ice-locked in 1846 near King William Island, about half way through the passage, unable to break free. Franklin died in 1847 and Captain Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier took over command. In 1848, the expedition abandoned ships and tried to escape south across the tundra by sledge. Although some of the crew may not have died until the early 1850s, no evidence has ever been found of any survivors.
Starvation, exposure and scurvy all contributed to the deaths. In 1981, an anthropologist from the University of Alberta examined remains from sites associated with the expedition. Examination of tissue and bone from the frozen bodies of three seamen exhumed from the permafrost of Beechey Island revealed high concentrations of lead in all three bodies (the expedition carried 8,000 tins of food sealed with a lead-based solder). Further research has suggested botulism also caused deaths among crew members. Evidence also confirms that cannibalism was a last resort for some of the crew. Included in this video is a map and summary slide of the known and surmised routes of the Franklin Expedition and locations where remains (as indicators of the crews' escape route) have been discovered. Note that Stan Rogers' "brave Kelso" is in reference to Henry Kelsey (1667-1724), the first known European to have explored Canada's Great Plains.

The show derived its title and the main characters Rogers, Towne, and Marriner from the 1937 novel of the same name by Kenneth Roberts, and from the 1940 MGM feature film based on the novel. The scope of the novel was much broader than that of the series, and the second half of the book included an historically based attempt by Rogers to find a water route through North America as a "passage" to the Pacific Ocean. One of the earlier series telecast in color, Northwest Passage aired new episodes on NBC from September 14, 1958, to March 13, 1959. Keith Larsen (1924–2006) played the lead role (originally that of Spencer Tracy in the film); Buddy Ebsen (1908–2003), later the star of CBS's The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones, appeared as Sergeant Hunk Marriner (originally played in the film by Walter Brennan, who at the time of this series was starring in the TV series The Real McCoys), and Don Burnett co-starred as Ensign Langdon Towne (originally played by Robert Young, at the time of this series starring in Father Knows Best).[1]
Rogers formed a volunteer group, Rogers' Rangers, determined to fight with the British against the French and their Indian allies in what later became northern New York State. The series premiere entitled "Fight at the River" featured 24-year-old Denny Scott Miller as Ranger Cooper. He was later Duke Shannon on the Western Wagon Train and the military husband in NBC's Mona McCluskey.[2]
