It's over, The Rams lose their opener, 28-0. Case Keenum looked overmatched, Todd Gurley couldn't find any holes and Aaron Donald was ejected. And this was supposed I be the early cake in the Rams' schedule.
There might be better ways to start a season than walloping a division rival at home but there probably aren't many. To be sure, the San Francisco 49ers probably wouldn't trade what happened Monday night for any other start to the year after they beat the Rams 28-0. A dominant defensive performance, even against a porous offense, was a welcome beginning for a defense that finished 29th in the NFL a year ago in yards allowed. Add to it a run game that compiled 150 rushing yards and Chip Kelly will gladly take his first win as 49ers coach.
Colin Kaepernick in at quarterback for the 49ers.
If the 49ers get the ball back, it's possible we'll see a Colin Kaepernick cameo at quarterback. He's been loosening up on the sideline.
Aaron Donald has been kicked out of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct and making contact with an official. He slammed his helmet to the grass as he walked off. The Rams have given up 97 yards on eight penalties.
Listen to Antonio Brown's reaction to Josh Norman not covering him and the name of his new TD celebration: 'Boomin'
Blaine Gabbert hits Vance McDonald in the end zone to extend the 49ers' lead to 21-0 over the Rams.
The Rams give up an 8-yard pass play from Blaine Gabbert to tight end Vance McDonald, capping a 10-play, 77-yard drive that chewed up about four minutes. That interception from Case Keenum, who at the very least needs to limit turnovers for this offense, was the dagger.
Jeremy Hazelbaker started the ninth inning with a long home run, which ended Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks' no-hitter.
The Rams finally get deep into 49ers territory and Case Keenum makes an awful throw, resulting in his second interception of the night. He has completed only 12 of his 24 passes. This is not the preseason.
They share an equal level of scrutiny headed into this season, but the last time Jeff Fisher was over .500 as a head coach was 2008, when Chip Kelly still hadn't been a head coach at any level. Fisher has coached 96 NFL games since.
The 49ers have quietly been high on the potential of their young defense while acknowledging that they're relying on a lot of young players to take a step forward at once. But so far tonight, that group has looked much better than it did a year ago. Make no mistake, the Rams offense has all the makings of one of the worst in the league again but the Niners have so far bottled up Todd Gurley and dared Case Keenum to beat them. So far, it's worked. Midway through the third quarter, the Rams have just 96 yards of offense and are 1-of-10 on third down.
The Rams are 1-for-10 on third downs. Their quarterback is 9-of-20, their star running back has gained 29 yards on 13 carries and their offensive line is getting torched. Besides that, it's going well.
Looking for a Rams comeback? The Rams have lost 24 straight games when trailing by at least 14 (last win: 2012 against the Redskins) and 39 straight road games when trailing by at least 14 (last win: 2005 at Texans).
Watch Kyle Hendricks discuss his no hit bid on Monday against the Cardinals. It ended when Jeremy Hazelbaker lead off the ninth with a home run.
I spoke with 49ers RB Carlos Hyde during training camp. He said he was excited when Chip Kelly got the job because he'd heard that Kelly's offense was similar to the one in which he played under Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Hyde said he's watched tape of the stuff LeSean McCoy did in Kelly's first year in Philadelphia, and that he looked forward to showing off his pass-catching skills. If he stays healthy, Hyde likely can deliver what Kelly needs from his running back. But that's a big "if," even if things do look very encouraging so far tonight.
Ryan Lochte's time on the season premiere of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," was interrupted by an apparent altercation.
The Niners haven't been shy about the formula they want to use to win games under new coach Chip Kelly and it's nothing too complicated. Running the ball effectively and defending the run are basic tenets. In the first half, they did both well as they took a 14-0 lead into the locker room. The run game was particularly strong, finishing the first 30 minutes with 123 yards on the ground. For what it's worth, Kelly's Eagles were 24-8 over the past three years when rushing for 100 yards or more in a game.
The Rams trail, 14-0, at the end of a first half that was about as ugly as it gets. Failed to convert on seven consecutive third downs, gained 87 yards on 31 plays from scrimmage and gave up 124 rushing yards.
This seems a good time to recall that Rams coach Jeff Fisher hasn't had a winning season since 2008. He hasn't coached a team to a playoff victory since 2003.
The Rams offense has no rhythm tonight. Without an established run game and production from Todd Gurley, the Rams are being forced to throw the ball in third down situations. That's the perfect time for the 49ers to bring pressure.
Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid take a knee during the national anthem before the 49ers-Rams game.
Shaun Draughn doubles the 49ers' lead with their second rushing touchdown of the game to increase San Francisco's lead to 14-0 over the Rams. (Live on ESPN)
The Niners lead, 14-0, with just over 8 minutes left in the first half. The Rams have allowed 5.9 yards per carry. No team had more than 4.9 yards per carry last season. Blaine Gabbert has scrambled 6 times for 41 yards.
