There might be better ways to start a season than walloping a division rival at home but there probably aren't many. To be sure, the San Francisco 49ers probably wouldn't trade what happened Monday night for any other start to the year after they beat the Rams 28-0. A dominant defensive performance, even against a porous offense, was a welcome beginning for a defense that finished 29th in the NFL a year ago in yards allowed. Add to it a run game that compiled 150 rushing yards and Chip Kelly will gladly take his first win as 49ers coach.

So far, it's worked. Midway through the third quarter, the Rams have just 96 yards of offense and are 1-of-10 on third down.

He said he was excited when Chip Kelly got the job because he'd heard that Kelly's offense was similar to the one in which he played under Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Hyde said he's watched tape of the stuff LeSean McCoy did in Kelly's first year in Philadelphia, and that he looked forward to showing off his pass-catching skills. If he stays healthy, Hyde likely can deliver what Kelly needs from his running back. But that's a big "if," even if things do look very encouraging so far tonight.

The Niners haven't been shy about the formula they want to use to win games under new coach Chip Kelly and it's nothing too complicated. Running the ball effectively and defending the run are basic tenets. In the first half, they did both well as they took a 14-0 lead into the locker room. The run game was particularly strong, finishing the first 30 minutes with 123 yards on the ground. For what it's worth, Kelly's Eagles were 24-8 over the past three years when rushing for 100 yards or more in a game.
