Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is an independent city and not part of any county. Richmond is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond area. Geographically, Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288.
The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610--1611. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737. It became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. During the Revolutionary War period, several notable events occurred in the city, including Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in 1775 at St. John's Church, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America. The city entered the 20th century with one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems, as well as a national hub of African-American commerce and culture, the Jackson Ward neighborhood.
Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.[9] Tourism is also important, as many historic sites are in or nearby the city.

For this year's UCI Road World Championships, the stage will be set by the city of Richmond, Virginia. So we found it prudent to examine the vibrant elements that make up the colors of Richmond, and how they work together to be the perfect host for the most prestigious one-day event in all of cycling.
On our journey, we meet a handful of the key players of the zeitgeist, from artists to artisans, and get their take on what makes Richmond, not only the perfect course for Worlds, but also the perfect place to live.
Richmond. It's where the South meets the North, where old meets new, and where cycling, in all of its forms, has found a welcoming, permanent home. The stage is set—now it's time to ride.

Richmond (/ˈrɪtʃmənd/ RICH-mənd) is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. While it was incorporated in 1742, Richmond has been an independent city since 1871.
As of the 2010 census, the population was 204,214; in 2014, the population was estimated to be 217,853, the fourth-most populous city in Virginia. The Richmond Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,260,029, the third-most populous metro in the state.
Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288. Plot: A dramatizing of Knut Hamsun's famous novel from 1898, Victoria, which is about the tragic and unhappy love affair between Victoria and Johannes. She's a daughter of a rich estate owner, and he is the son of the poor miller. Despite the deep love between them, her father makes Victoria ditch Johannes, and instead marry to the chamber-mans son Otto. Johannes is a writer, and very fond of the nature, but he can never get the girl he loves above all, the wealthy born Victoria. They meet for the first time at age 14, when she is 10. We follow them for years, where we see Johannes makes every possible attempt to impress her, and to climb in social rank, at which he doesn't succeed. They meet up several times, declaring their love for each other, but Victoria is obliged to merry far richer Otto to ensure their parents needed future prosperity. In the end Victoria dies of tuberculosis, and leaves behind a letter claiming she's now free for Johannes.

Thomas Jefferson is credited with the overall design of the Virginia Capitol, together with French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau. The design was modeled after the Maison Carrée at Nîmes in southern France, an ancient Roman temple. The only other state to accurately copy an ancient model is the Vermont State House. The Building was completed in 1788 and is over 215 years old. The current Capitol is the eighth built to serve as Virginia's state house, primarily due to fires during the Colonial period. (January 2013) Built with genuine Schindler people-movers (excepting the train) in 2003, and managed by Forest Hill. This is probably the biggest and most successful mall in the Richmond area- and it's outdoors! However, recreational filming is permitted as seen on list of rules at ~45 seconds in video. I do not profit in any form off of this video. -

7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. RICHMOND, Va. -- Kim Steger loves her 1973 Volkswagon Super Beetle.
"It was my first car," she recalled Thursday evening.
Back then she was 16, going to high school in Chesterfield County.
Now her own daughter is that age, looking for her first car.
"I had always had a thought, a vision a dream, that my oldest daughter . . . this would be her first car," Kim said.
She and her husband looked around their home in Lynchburg for a restoration shop, "but they wanted way too much money."
Enter 24-year-old Cullen Kohls of Richmond. He loves Beetles - he has one of his own in parts and pieces - and he wanted to learn more about the fine art of restoring them.
He posted on social media about it.
"I met her on Craigslist," Cullen recalled Thursday. "She was like, 'I have this Bug.' She wanted to get it restored. She was trying to get it done for good price. And I was looking for a car to paint. I love Bugs. I reached out to her and offered to paint it up for her in exchange for, like, the experience."
It was two years ago when the Stegers dropped off the tired, dinged, rusted-out Bug.
