North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.
I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another. That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself. Subscribe! YouTube: https://w...

RT takes an exclusive look at North Korea, the world’s most closed-off country. Life here is isolated from the outside world and every aspect of existence is regulated by order of the "Great Leader", from the art you’re allowed to see, the books you can read, even to your hairstyle. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is perhaps the least known country in the world today. Based on a political ideology known as ‘Juche’, the socialist government controls every source of information and the national leader, Kim Jong-un, preserves the peace and defends the state’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage. It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statue...

Would you invest in North Korea? The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about North Korea is its unpredictability. Well, as the regime seeks much-needed foreign investment, some adventurous businessmen have identified some opportunities. Arirang News′ Hwang Sung-hee takes a look at how the world′s most closed economy is trying to make money. Its constant military provocations, threats and dangerous brinkmanship over its nuclear program make North Korea the least attractive place for business. But some say the regime is opening up to draw much-needed foreign investment, for example, in tourism. "There is now a growing trade in tourism from the Netherlands to North Korea. So the North Korean government is now inviting Dutch students to go to Pyongyang to give Dutch language lesson...

North Korea has threatened a "preemptive and offensive nuclear strike" in response to planned joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises. CNN's Paula Hancocks has the latest.
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — The U.S. and South Korea will begin their largest ever joint military drills on Monday. In response, North Korea has threatened to launch a 'pre-emptive nuclear strike of justice.' This year's U.S.-South Korea annual military drill will be twice the size of last year, involving more than 300,000 South Korean soldiers and 15,000 U.S. troops, according to the BBC. "We will carry out these exercises while keeping tabs on signs of North Korean provocations. If the North provokes us during this exercise, the U.S. and our troops will retaliate with an attack ten-fold stronger," a South Korean official told Yonhap News. The annual exercises are intended to warn North Korea against its provocations while the North considers them a rehearsal for invasion. "Our targets are t...

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has once again demanded his military to continue bolstering its nuclear force. In a statement, Kim stressed the need to continue making what he called miraculous achievements in nuclear capabilities. The remarks came after the U-N Security Council announced it would convene on Tuesday to discuss North Korea. On Monday, Pyongyang test-fired three ballistic missiles into the sea sparking fresh condemnations especially from world leaders taking part in the G-20 summit in China. South Korea, Japan as well as the US have all expressed concerns about the tests, describing them as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The North says it will not relinquish its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy toward Pyongyang and dissolves the U...
SLBM 대응책 북, 핵잠수함 건조로 부각 There are growing concerns, after the North's missile test, about the adequacy of South Korea's submarine fleet. Military experts are urging South Korea to add nuclear-powered submarines to its fleet... to counter the threat of North Korea's submarine-launched ballistic missiles. According to the defense ministry, the South Korean navy has a total of 16 subs, with 14 of them currently active. An informative travel log from a visit to the most isolated country in the world, including a review of food and accommodation.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s. "Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture. * Third World Indie Film Festival 2013 (San Francisco, USA)...

Before becoming the world's most notorious dictator, Kim Jong-il ran North Korea's film industry. He directed every film made in the country but knew they were nothing compared to Hollywood. Then he hit on the perfect solution: order the kidnapping of South Korea's most famous actress and her ex-husband, the country's most acclaimed director. In a jaw-dropping mission, the couple were kidnapped, held hostage, and then 'employed' to make films for the Dear Leader, including a remake of Godzilla. They gained Kim's trust but could they escape?

In My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/worst Place on Earth, Wendy shares a glimpse of North Korea as it's never been seen before. Even though it's the scariest place on Earth, somehow Wendy forgot to check her sense of humor at the border. But Wendy's initial amusement and bewilderment soon turned to frustration and growing paranoia. Before long she learned the essential conundrum of "tourism" in North Korea: Travel is truly a love affair. But, just like love, it's a two-way street. And North Korea deprives you of all this. They want you to fall in love with the singular vision of the country they're willing to show you and nothing mor...

Money & Power in North Korea Hidden Economy North Korea 2015 North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. At the end of World War II in 1945, the Korean Peninsula was divided into two zones along the 38th parallel, with the northern half of the peninsula occupied by the Soviet Union and the southern half by the United States. Initial hopes for a unified, independent Korea evaporated as the politics of the Cold War resulted in the establishment of two separate states with diametrically opposed political, economic, and social systems. Soviet General Terentii Shtykov recommended the establishment of the Soviet Civil ...
It's the world's most closed country, over the last few decades, very few foreigners and even fewer journalists have gained access to North Korea. TRT World’s Imran Garda was invited to visit the so-called hermit kingdom to take part in the Pyongyang marathon and be shown the city's tourist sites. It's a country known for its ballistic missile tests, its nuclear capabilities and a well trodden path of sabre rattling. But it's also a country governed by the Juche ideal of self reliance and a country with enormous national pride. A country of paradoxes, this is ‘The Newsmakers in North Korea.’
I can smash a glass against the wall,
pick up the pieces and we’re better for it.
‘Cause you know everybody weds,
then the beast can mow the lawn,
and the queen can feed the kids.
And we’ll be better for it.
I’m not impressed, suburbia.
Could you do a little better for me?
I’m gonna smile ‘till my teeth ache,
I am determined for my family’s sake.
Happily married like the rest of them,
I’m better ‘cause I buy American.
I’m not impressed suburbia.
