Inside the famous Friday Mosque of Herat or Masjid Jami, which is one of the oldest mosques in Afghanistan.
At the time of the Arab invasion in the middle of the 7th century, the Sasanian central power seemed already largely nominal in the province in contrast with the role of the Hephthalites tribal lords, who were settled in the Herat region and in the neighboring districts, mainly in pastoral Bādghis and in Qohestān. It must be underlined, however, that Herat remained one of the three Sasanian mint centers in the east, the other two being Balkh and Marv. The Hephthalites from Herat and some unidentified Turks opposed the Arab forces in a battle of Qohestān in 651-52 AD, trying to block their advance on Nishāpur, but they were defeated
When the Arab armies appeared in Khorāsān in the 650s AD, Herāt was counted among the twelve capital towns of the Sasanian Empire. The Arab army under the general command of Ahnaf ibn Qais in its conquest of Khorāsān in 652 seems to have avoided Herāt, but it can be assumed that the city submitted to the Arabs, since shortly afterwards an Arab governor is mentioned there. A treaty was drawn in which the regions of Bādghis and Bushanj were included. As did many other places in Khorāsān, Herāt rebelled and had to be re-conquered several times.[11] In 702 AD Yazid ibn al-Muhallab defeated certain Arab rebels, followers of Ibn al-Ash'ath, and forced them out of Herat. The city was the scene of conflicts between different groups of Muslims and Arab tribes in the disorders leading to the establishment of the Abbasid Caliphate. Herat was also a centre of the followers of Ustadh Sis.
In 870 AD, Yaqub ibn Layth Saffari, a local ruler of the Saffarid dynasty conquered Herat and the rest of the nearby regions in the name of Islam.
"...Arab armies carrying the banner of Islam came out of the west to defeat the Sasanians in 642 AD and then they marched with confidence to the east. On the western periphery of the Afghan area the princes of Herat and Seistan gave way to rule by Arab governors but in the east, in the mountains, cities submitted only to rise in revolt and the hastily converted returned to their old beliefs once the armies passed. The harshness and avariciousness of Arab rule produced such unrest, however, that once the waning power of the Caliphate became apparent, native rulers once again established themselves independent. Among these the Saffarids of Seistan shone briefly in the Afghan area. The fanatic founder of this dynasty, the coppersmith’s apprentice Yaqub ibn Layth Saffari, came forth from his capital at Zaranj in 870 AD and marched through Bost, Kandahar, Ghazni, Kabul, Bamiyan, Balkh and Herat, conquering in the name of Islam.

Great Friday Mosque in Herat was build in 13th century, many times reconstructed especially after the town was destructed during Mongol and Timurid invasions. Most of the amazing stucco floral works originate from 1940s renovation.

Herat
Herat (/hɛˈrɑːt/;Persian: هرات; Pashto: هرات; Ancient Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρεια ἡ ἐν Ἀρίοις, Alexandria Ariana; Latin: Alexandria Ariorum) is the third largest city of Afghanistan. It has a population of about 436,300, and serves as the capital of Herat province, situated in the fertile valley of the Hari River. It is linked with Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif via highway 1 or the ring road. It is further linked to the city of Mashhad in neighboring Iran through the border town of Islam Qala.
Herat dates back to the Avestan times and was traditionally known for its wine. The city has a number of historic sites, including the Herat Citadel and the Mosallah Complex. During the Middle Ages Herat became one of the important cities of Khorasan, as it was known as the Pearl of Khorasan. It has been governed by various Afghan rulers since the early 18th century. In 1717, the city was invaded by the Hotaki forces until they were expelled by the Afsharids in 1736. After Nader Shah's death and Ahmad Shah Durrani's rise to power in 1747, Herat became part of Afghanistan. It witnessed some political disturbances and military invasions during the early half of the 19th century but the 1857 Treaty of Paris ended hostilities of the Anglo-Persian War. Herat suffered from extensive destruction during the Soviet war in the 1980s, but certain parts of the city has been spared from it.

Inside the famous Friday Mosque of Herat or Masjid Jami, which is one of the oldest mosques in Afghanistan.
At the time of the Arab invasion in the middle of the 7th century, the Sasanian central power seemed already largely nominal in the province in contrast with the role of the Hephthalites tribal lords, who were settled in the Herat region and in the neighboring districts, mainly in pastoral Bādghis and in Qohestān. It must be underlined, however, that Herat remained one of the three Sasanian mint centers in the east, the other two being Balkh and Marv. The Hephthalites from Herat and some unidentified Turks opposed the Arab forces in a battle of Qohestān in 651-52 AD, trying to block their advance on Nishāpur, but they were defeated
When the Arab armies appeared in Khorāsān in the 650s AD, Herāt was counted among the twelve capital towns of the Sasanian Empire. The Arab army under the general command of Ahnaf ibn Qais in its conquest of Khorāsān in 652 seems to have avoided Herāt, but it can be assumed that the city submitted to the Arabs, since shortly afterwards an Arab governor is mentioned there. A treaty was drawn in which the regions of Bādghis and Bushanj were included. As did many other places in Khorāsān, Herāt rebelled and had to be re-conquered several times.[11] In 702 AD Yazid ibn al-Muhallab defeated certain Arab rebels, followers of Ibn al-Ash'ath, and forced them out of Herat. The city was the scene of conflicts between different groups of Muslims and Arab tribes in the disorders leading to the establishment of the Abbasid Caliphate. Herat was also a centre of the followers of Ustadh Sis.
In 870 AD, Yaqub ibn Layth Saffari, a local ruler of the Saffarid dynasty conquered Herat and the rest of the nearby regions in the name of Islam.

The party has collected six pieces of Alumina from the caves on Gayas, Loire, Ulupp, and Elba Islands. They now have to travel to Herat, the kingdom up the river west of Marse.
From Marse, they sail west along the coast. A short way to the west, they find the river they must sail up (time 0:45). The river is pretty tight. After passing into a mountain range and entering a lake, they locate Herat (time 4:05).
Talking with folks around Herat, the party learns that the king is an extreme gourmet and can't find anything he likes to eat. They also learn that the purple newt found in the cave east of town is supposedly really good in recipes. So good that a cook from Lyden was seeking it. Hm...
In the inn, the western cabinet contains a Plum Cider (time 4:33). The other contains a Hi Potion.
In the house with red floors northeast of the entrance, the western cabinet contains a Rod (time 5:26). What the heck, game? The eastern cabinet contains an Apron.
The southeastern celler entrance leads to the armor shop (time 5:41). Also in there is a man who has good advice about Dragon Eggs. The party will not be following that advice just yet, though. First, I want them to raid all the treasure chests that the Dragon Eggs will be scattered to later.
Speaking of the armor shop, it has some excellent stuff to check out.
Behind the item and weapon shop, the party can pick up a Mind Potion behind the item shop logo inside the building (time 6:48). Next door to it is a Great Potion behind the weapon shop logo.
The weapon shop's main new addition is the Buster Sword. If the party has collected the one from Level 7 of the Old Cave, only one should be needed now.
The northwest path leads up to Herat Castle, the last friendly castle in the game (time 8:19).
After chatting with folks on the first floor, the party heads up to the second floor with the stairway in front of the center door (time 8:56).
The northwestern chest of drawers contains an Ex Bomb (time 9:20).
Talking with the cook in the northeast room will result in some humorous dialogue. Basically, the cook needs new ingredients to please the king.
The party next goes up to the third floor (time 11:37). A Power Potion can be found in the chest of drawers in the old man's bedroom (time 11:48).
Afterwards, the party heads up to the fourth floor (time 12:21). In the throne room, they learn more from the princess and the king (time 12:39). So basically, the party must get the king some tasty food in order to get the last piece of Alumina. The things we do.
The castle's eastern entrance on the ground floor leads to the treasure room (time 13:11). But of course, the party cannot collect the treasures until they have pleased the king.
Afterwards, the party Warps over to Lyden (time 14:01). Downstairs in the cooking building on the hill, they will find a man robed in red in the kitchen (time 14:37). Apparently, he has prior experience with Herat's king. Before he can help, he needs some Purple Newt. Apparently, it is supposed to be in the cave east of Herat, but the man has not found any. Maybe the party should look.
Before signing off, the party Warps back to Herat (time 17:34).

LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say a hot air balloon carrying at least 16 people caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas, and it is unclear whether there are injuries or deaths. Lynn Lunsford with the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the accident happened about 8.40 a.m. Saturday near Lockhart, Texas, when the hot air balloon crashed into a pasture ... A hot air balloon carrying at least 16 people caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas on Saturday, and there did not appear to be any survivors, authorities said. Authorities would not confirm the exact number of deaths, but Lynn Lunsford with the Federal Aviation Administration said the balloon was carrying at least 16 people and the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that it didn't look like anyone survived ... ....
