Colbert gatecrashes Republican Convention

Late Show host Stephen Colbert has hijacked the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to mock Donald Trump.

The Late Show host paid a visit to the arena in Cleveland on Sunday where the four-day convention is being held to film scenes for his CBS show.

Dressed as flamboyant Hunger Games character Caesar Flickerman, the 52-year-old posed with fans and stormed the stage to throw insults at presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Playing on the hit Hunger Games franchise ahead of the November election, Colbert has renamed the race the "Hungry for Power Games", performing skits on The Late Show while dressed as Flickerman.

Holding a stuffed weasel and wearing a blue wig, Colbert took the stage to declare the start of the presidential race.

"It is my honour to hereby launch and begin the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games!" Colbert said in Flickerman's shrill accent.

While Quicken Loans Arena was essentially empty, the RNC didn't take kindly to the comedian making fun of their event and a gruff security guard escorted Colbert off stage.

"Look, I know I'm not supposed to be up here," Colbert told security, "But let's be honest, neither is Donald Trump."

Mobile phone footage shows the comedian scuffling with security, who essentially had to push Colbert off stage.

According to Vox, the RNC gave Colbert permission to film on the floor but didn't know he would try and give a speech to the handful of people in the arena.

Later on Twitter, Colbert shared a picture of himself pretending to pull the plug on the convention's power supply.

"Look, I know I'm not supposed to be up here, but let's be honest, neither is Donald Trump."

The Republican National Convention kicked off on Monday to scenes of havoc as a number of states demanded for a roll call vote in a last-ditch attempt to stop Trump from being given the party nomination.

Colbert is teaming up with Jon Stewart to cover both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic Convention ahead of the November election.

In hilarious Late Show skits, Colbert has honoured the Republican party's "fallen tributes", stitching up the presidential race as a Hunger Games movie.
