Jonesborough was founded in 1779, 17 years before Tennessee became a state. It was named after North Carolina legislator, Willie Jones, who supported North Carolina's westward expansion over the Appalachian Mountains. The town was originally a part of North Carolina. In 1784, Jonesborough was one of the towns that attempted to create a new state called the State of Franklin, named after American founding father Benjamin Franklin. The State of Franklin, however, was never recognized by Congress, and was re-claimed by North Carolina by 1788. Jonesborough is often considered to be the center of the abolitionist movement within the states that would join the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Elihu Embree printed his publication, The Emancipator, from the town of Jonesborough. Circulation began in 1820, making The Emancipator the first American periodical to be dedicated exclusively to the issue of the abolition of slavery. For the past 23 years, the Jonesborough Garden Gala has showcased some of the most exclusive gardens hidden in Tennessee’s Oldest Town. Now you can make the most of your sofa-surfing with your feet up and cup of tea in hand as you take a visual journey through some of the most impressive gardens in Tennessee’s most historic town.
This charity event is hosted by the Schubert Club, the Tuesday Garden Club and is supported by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardener Association. The Schubert Club of Jonesborough uses the money received from the Garden Gala to support several community organizations and projects. The Tuesday Garden Club has evolved over the past 9 decades into a dedicated group of people interested in gardening education and promoting good stewardship of natural resources within the Washington County and Jonesborough Community.
Each year in June, the Tuesday Garden Club and Schubert Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee team up to host the annual Garden Gala. Guests are invited to tour gardens in town and the garden owners and master gardeners are on hand to answer questions. The clubs split the funds raised from the Garden Gala and use the proceeds to support other organization in our community.
You can also watch the virtual tour on the Jonesborough Hidden Gardens Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/VirtualGardenGala.
