The Gregorian calendar, also called the Western calendar and the Christian calendar, is internationally the most widely used civil calendar. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582.
The calendar was a refinement to the Julian calendar[4] amounting to a 0.002% correction in the length of the year. The motivation for the reform was to stop the drift of the calendar with respect to the equinoxes and solstices—particularly the vernal equinox, which set the date for Easter celebrations. Transition to the Gregorian calendar would restore the holiday to the time of the year in which it was celebrated when introduced by the early Church. The reform was adopted initially by the Catholic countries of Europe. Protestants and Eastern Orthodox countries continued to use the traditional Julian calendar and adopted the Gregorian reform after a time, for the sake of convenience in international trade. The last European country to adopt the reform was Greece, in 1923.
The Gregorian reform contained two parts: a reform of the Julian calendar as used prior to Pope Gregory XIII's time and a reform of the lunar cycle used by the Church, with the Julian calendar, to calculate the date of Easter. The reform was a modification of a proposal made by Aloysius Lilius. His proposal included reducing the number of leap years in four centuries from 100 to 97, by making 3 out of 4 centurial years common instead of leap years. Lilius also produced an original and practical scheme for adjusting the epacts of the moon when calculating the annual date of Easter, solving a long-standing obstacle to calendar reform.
The Gregorian reform modified the Julian calendar's scheme of leap years as follows:
Every year that is exactly divisible by four is a leap year, except for years that are exactly divisible by 100, but these centurial years are leap years if they are exactly divisible by 400. For example, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 are.
In addition to the change in the mean length of the calendar year from 365.25 days (365 days 6 hours) to 365.2425 days (365 days 5 hours 49 minutes 12 seconds), a reduction of 10 minutes 48 seconds per year, the Gregorian calendar reform also dealt with the accumulated difference between these lengths. The canonical Easter tables were devised at the end of the third century, when the vernal equinox fell either on 20 March or 21 March depending on the year's position in the leap year cycle. As the rule was that the full moon preceding Easter was not to precede the equinox, the date was fixed at 21 March for computational purposes and the earliest date for Easter was fixed at 22 March. The Gregorian calendar reproduced these conditions by removing ten days.
To unambiguously specify the date, dual dating or Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are sometimes used with dates. Dual dating uses two consecutive years because of differences in the starting date of the year, or includes both the Julian and Gregorian dates. Old Style and New Style (N.S.) indicate either whether the start of the Julian year has been adjusted to start on 1 January (N.S.) even though documents written at the time use a different start of year (O.S.), or whether a date conforms to the Julian calendar (O.S.) rather than the Gregorian (N.S.).
The Gregorian calendar continued to use the previous calendar era (year-numbering system), which counts years from the traditional date of the nativity (Anno Domini), originally calculated in the 6th century by Dionysius Exiguus. STORYLINE
Guatemala on Thursday marked the end of a major cycle in the 5,125-year Mayan Long Count calendar with a colourful, elaborate celebration filled with dance, Mayan music and gravity-defying headdresses.
The ceremony at the Tikal archaeological site, near the northern border, started just after 2100 local time (0300 GMT), with man dressed like a Mayan priest blowing a horn in the Temple of Giant Jaguar, the most famous of all Tikal's temples.
Wearing costumes inspired by ancient Mayan ceremonial dress, performers carried a "king" and "queen" on litters around the base of the pyramid as musicians played traditional instruments designed to make sounds that imitate the natural world - a jaguar hissing or a bird singing.
"Show us the road of peace and harmony throughout time," called out the event's presenter, Maria Francisca Yax Tiu, as she stood flanked by other young performers on the pyramid's steps.
The show was broadcast live by the government and staged with the sort of pageantry usually reserved for openings of major sporting events.
Access to the event was limited amid tight security owing to the attendance of President Otto Perez, a restriction that infuriated members of indigenous rights groups who came to the site to make offerings but were not allowed to enter.
A group of several dozen protesters gathered outside the entrance to protest their exclusion on the sacred day.
"We should all have access here," protester Jose Kak said. "We are the owners, the inheritors of these sacred temples."
The celebration came on the eve of 21 December, the date characterised in popular culture as the "Mayan Apocalypse", despite what archaeologists say is scant evidence that the Mayans believed the world would end with the close of the era, known as the 13th Baktun.
While the end of the Mayan calendar cycle prompted a wave of doomsday speculation across the globe, few in the Mayan heartland believe the world will end.
The Mayans measured time in 394-year periods known as baktuns.
The 13th baktun ends around 21 December and 13 is considered a sacred number for the Mayans.
But archaeologists have uncovered Mayan glyphs that refer to dates far, far in the future, long beyond 21 December.

Even as an eighth grader with mostly terrible taste I was discerning enough to realize that most of the bands of that era--this is right after Blink-182 got huge and a rising tide lifted a lot of boats that all had like, a bass player with pink hair--most of the bands of that era were basically derivative of NOFX. I don't know what the age demographics of this channel are--so maybe I should find a contemporary analogue. I guess it is like how Justin Bieber and One Direction are fundamentally derivative of Usher. I think that analog works-- NOFX to Usher? Just remove all body hair and jump nine socioeconomic brackets. Midtown was different. There was some Green Day in there, sure, but they stood out against the horde. Thick sounding chords, thick-sounding voices. Like a voice that came from a thick neck, you know? And as a haver of a thick neck I appreciated it. A few years ago, I realized that the early-aughts Pop Punk world was divided into two eras: Before Deja Entendu, and After Deja Entendu. It's june 2003--exactly ten years ago--and a sixteen year old Zac Little (that's me by the way) A sixteen year old Zac Little catches the tail end of a music video on MTV2 (back then, they still played videos on MTV2!) for a song called "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows." Deja Entendu was a game-changing record. It swapped out the candy-colored, funny and vulgar Blink-182 aesthetic for something dark and portentous and EPIC. That's like, right when we started using the word epic so often. Coincidence!? I THINK PROBABLY, yeah. But honestly, this record was huge. My friends and I obsessed over it, my girlfriend and I pretentiously dry-humped to it, and the pop-punk universe re-aligned itself around it. And a lot of bands broke apart against the force of its gravitational pull. Like MIDTOWN. They released a pale imitation of Deja Entendu in 2004, called Forget What You Know, which I think was what they told themselves as they entered the studio. Deja Entendu is probably the most important record of my life, but it is not the most important one because it is my favorite. Far from my favorite, really. It's just the one that I understand everything else in terms of. I do still listen to those Midtown records, but I understand them differently than I once did. It's fitting that there's an astronaut on the cover of this record because that is kind of what it was like for me--being an astronaut. You go, and then you come back, but you're different. One way that you are different is that you are kind of an asshole for a while. You have to step carefully, or you'll come across a book or a movie or a band that will completely alter your entire life. Maybe we all have our own calendar eras--there are people for whom Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous" realigned their cultural universe. For some, maybe it's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. There are probably a few people left for whom it was Weezer's Pinkerton, but most of those people have killed themselves by now, to be honest. So what was your musical birth of christ? What record realigned your world? Was it Brand New fir you, too? were you and i pretentiously dry humping at the same time? Do you feel like it is happening to you right now? Talk to me about it.

Calendar era
A calendar era is the year numbering system used by a calendar. For example, the Gregorian calendar numbers its years in the Western Christian era (the Coptic and Ethiopic churches have their own Christian eras, see below). The instant, date, or year from which time is marked is called the epoch of the era. There are many different calendar eras.
In antiquity, regnal years were counted from the ascension of a monarch. This makes the Chronology of the ancient Near East very difficult to reconstruct, based on disparate and scattered king lists, such as the Sumerian King List or the Babylonian Canon of Kings. In East Asia, reckoning by era names chosen by ruling monarchs ceased in the 20th century except for Japan, where they are still used.

Among the ancient Greek historians and scholars, a common method for indicating the passage of years was based on the order of Olympic Games, first held in 776 BC. The pan-Hellenic games provided the various independent city-states a mutually recognizable system of dates. Olympiad dating was not used in everyday life. This system was in use from the 3rd century. The modern Olympic Games (or Summer Olympic Games beginning 1896) do not continue the four year periods from ancient Greece; 669th Olympiad would have begun in the summer of 1897, but the modern Olympics were first held in 1896.

It's june 2003--exactly ten years ago--and a sixteen year old Zac Little (that's me by the way) A sixteen year old Zac Little catches the tail end of a music video on MTV2 (back then, they still played videos on MTV2!) for a song called "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows." It swapped out the candy-colored, funny and vulgar Blink-182 aesthetic for something dark and portentous and EPIC. That's like, right when we started using the word epic so often. Coincidence!? My friends and I obsessed over it, my girlfriend and I pretentiously dry-humped to it, and the pop-punk universe re-aligned itself around it. And a lot of bands broke apart against the force of its gravitational pull. Like MIDTOWN. They released a pale imitation of Deja Entendu in 2004, called Forget What You Know, which I think was what they told themselves as they entered the studio. One way that you are different is that you are kind of an asshole for a while. The Gregorian calendar, also called the Western calendar and the Christian calendar, is internationally the most widely used civil calendar. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582.
The calendar was a refinement to the Julian calendar amounting to a 0.002% correction in the length of the year. The motivation for the reform was to bring the date for the celebration of Easter to the time of the year in which it was celebrated when it was introduced by the early Church. Because the celebration of Easter was tied to the spring equinox, the Roman Catholic Church considered the steady drift in the date of Easter caused by the year being slightly too long to be undesirable. The reform was adopted initially by the Catholic countries of Europe. Protestants and Eastern Orthodox countries continued to use the traditional Julian calendar and adopted the Gregorian reform after a time, for the sake of convenience in international trade. The last European country to adopt the reform was Greece, in 1923.
The Gregorian reform contained two parts: a reform of the Julian calendar as used prior to Pope Gregory XIII's time and a reform of the lunar cycle used by the Church, with the Julian calendar, to calculate the date of Easter. The reform was a modification of a proposal made by Aloysius Lilius. His proposal included reducing the number of leap years in four centuries from 100 to 97, by making 3 out of 4 centurial years common instead of leap years. Lilius also produced an original and practical scheme for adjusting the epacts of the moon when calculating the annual date of Easter, solving a long-standing obstacle to calendar reform.
The Gregorian reform modified the Julian calendar's scheme of leap years as follows:
Every year that is exactly divisible by four is a leap year, except for years that are exactly divisible by 100, but these centurial years are leap years if they are exactly divisible by 400. For example, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years, but the year 2000 is.
In addition to the change in the mean length of the calendar year from 365.25 days (365 days 6 hours) to 365.2425 days (365 days 5 hours 49 minutes 12 seconds), a reduction of 10 minutes 48 seconds per year, the Gregorian calendar reform also dealt with the accumulated difference between these lengths. The canonical Easter tables were devised at the end of the third century, when the vernal equinox fell either on 20 March or 21 March depending on the year's position in the leap year cycle. As the rule was that the full moon preceding Easter was not to precede the equinox the equinox was fixed at 21 March for computational purposes and the earliest date for Easter was fixed at 22 March. Guatemala on Thursday marked the end of a major cycle in the 5,125-year Mayan Long Count calendar with a colourful, elaborate celebration filled with dance, Mayan music and gravity-defying headdresses.
The ceremony at the Tikal archaeological site, near the northern border, started just after 2100 local time (0300 GMT), with man dressed like a Mayan priest blowing a horn in the Temple of Giant Jaguar, the most famous of all Tikal's temples.
Wearing costumes inspired by ancient Mayan ceremonial dress, performers carried a "king" and "queen" on litters around the base of the pyramid as musicians played traditional instruments designed to make sounds that imitate the natural world - a jaguar hissing or a bird singing.
"Show us the road of peace and harmony throughout time," called out the event's presenter, Maria Francisca Yax Tiu, as she stood flanked by other young performers on the pyramid's steps.
The show was broadcast live by the government and staged with the sort of pageantry usually reserved for openings of major sporting events.
Access to the event was limited amid tight security owing to the attendance of President Otto Perez, a restriction that infuriated members of indigenous rights groups who came to the site to make offerings but were not allowed to enter.
A group of several dozen protesters gathered outside the entrance to protest their exclusion on the sacred day.
"We should all have access here," protester Jose Kak said. "We are the owners, the inheritors of these sacred temples."
The celebration came on the eve of 21 December, the date characterised in popular culture as the "Mayan Apocalypse", despite what archaeologists say is scant evidence that the Mayans believed the world would end with the close of the era, known as the 13th Baktun.
While the end of the Mayan calendar cycle prompted a wave of doomsday speculation across the globe, few in the Mayan heartland believe the world will end.
The Mayans measured time in 394-year periods known as baktuns.
The 13th baktun ends around 21 December and 13 is considered a sacred number for the Mayans.
But archaeologists have uncovered Mayan glyphs that refer to dates far, far in the future, long beyond 21 December.

Even as an eighth grader with mostly terrible taste I was discerning enough to realize that most of the bands of that era--this is right after Blink-182 got huge and a rising tide lifted a lot of boats that all had like, a bass player with pink hair--most of the bands of that era were basically derivative of NOFX. I don't know what the age demographics of this channel are--so maybe I should find a contemporary analogue. I guess it is like how Justin Bieber and One Direction are fundamentally derivative of Usher. I think that analog works-- NOFX to Usher? Just remove all body hair and jump nine socioeconomic brackets. Midtown was different. There was some Green Day in there, sure, but they stood out against the horde. Thick sounding chords, thick-sounding voices. Like a voice that came from a thick neck, you know? And as a haver of a thick neck I appreciated it. A few years ago, I realized that the early-aughts Pop Punk world was divided into two eras: Before Deja Entendu, and After Deja Entendu. It's june 2003--exactly ten years ago--and a sixteen year old Zac Little (that's me by the way) A sixteen year old Zac Little catches the tail end of a music video on MTV2 (back then, they still played videos on MTV2!) for a song called "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows." Deja Entendu was a game-changing record. It swapped out the candy-colored, funny and vulgar Blink-182 aesthetic for something dark and portentous and EPIC. That's like, right when we started using the word epic so often. Coincidence!? I THINK PROBABLY, yeah. But honestly, this record was huge. My friends and I obsessed over it, my girlfriend and I pretentiously dry-humped to it, and the pop-punk universe re-aligned itself around it. And a lot of bands broke apart against the force of its gravitational pull. Like MIDTOWN. They released a pale imitation of Deja Entendu in 2004, called Forget What You Know, which I think was what they told themselves as they entered the studio. Even as an eighth grader with mostly terrible taste I was discerning enough to realize that most of the bands of that era--this is right after Blink-182 got huge and a rising tide lifted a lot of boats that all had like, a bass player with pink hair--most of the bands of that era were basically derivative of NOFX. I don't know what the age demographics of this channel are--so maybe I should find a contemporary analogue. I guess it is like how Justin Bieber and One Direction are fundamentally derivative of Usher. I think that analog works-- NOFX to Usher? Just remove all body hair and jump nine socioeconomic brackets. Midtown was different. There was some Green Day in there, sure, but they stood out against the horde. Thick sounding chords, thick-sounding voices. Like a voice that came from a thick neck, you know? And as a haver of a thick neck I appreciated it. A few years ago, I realized that the early-aughts Pop Punk world was divided into two eras: Before Deja Entendu, and After Deja Entendu. It's june 2003--exactly ten years ago--and a sixteen year old Zac Little (that's me by the way) A sixteen year old Zac Little catches the tail end of a music video on MTV2 (back then, they still played videos on MTV2!) for a song called "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows." Deja Entendu was a game-changing record. It swapped out the candy-colored, funny and vulgar Blink-182 aesthetic for something dark and portentous and EPIC. That's like, right when we started using the word epic so often. Coincidence!? I THINK PROBABLY, yeah. But honestly, this record was huge. My friends and I obsessed over it, my girlfriend and I pretentiously dry-humped to it, and the pop-punk universe re-aligned itself around it. And a lot of bands broke apart against the force of its gravitational pull. Like MIDTOWN. They released a pale imitation of Deja Entendu in 2004, called Forget What You Know, which I think was what they told themselves as they entered the studio. There are at least 2000 ancient gold mines scattered throughout Southern Africa, in close proximity to the ruins. Many speculations have been thrown about by all and sundry about the Land of Ophir, its location and the whereabouts of Queen Sheba. Most of these speculations tend to point to southern Africa as its most likely location.
And why not? This is after all the place where most of the gold in the world has been mined in modern history, and it was no different in ancient times. Is it a coincidence that the richest gold mine in the world today, Sheba Gold Mine, is located right here in Mpumalanga, South Africa?
Could these ancient settlements actually be the lost kingdom of Queen Sheba and the mines that provided King Solomon with all his riches?

Moray or Muray (Quechua) is an archaeological site in Peru approximately 50 km northwest of Cuzco on a high plateau at about 3,500 m and just west of the village of Maras.
Wilipedia, however, explains about Moray as follows:
The site contains unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is approximately 30 m deep.
As with many other Inca sites, it also has a sophisticated irrigation system.
モレイは、クスコの北西５０ｋｍにある、古代遺跡です。
いくつかの段々になっていて、深さはおよそ３０メートル。

Today’s story is about “Kofun” or burial mounds in Japan.
Or, as a matter of fact, “kohun” means old tomb mounds.
Are they really burial mounds whatever they are?
No!
They were calendars for ancient people.
Wikipedia explains about “Kohun” as follows.
The Kofun period is an era in the history of Japan from around 250 to 538.
The word kofun is Japanese for the type of burial mounds dating from this era.
The Kofun and the subsequent Asuka periods are sometimes referred to collectively as the Yamato period.
I, Hiroshi Hayashi, however have got a different idea.
They are ancient calendars.

The course of the Sun and the Moon are the most evident forms of timekeeping, and the year and lunation were most commonly used in pre-modern societies worldwide as time units. Nevertheless, the Roman calendar contained very ancient remnants of a pre-Etruscan 10-month solar year.[2] The first recorded calendars date to the Bronze Age, dependent on the development of writing in the Ancient Near East, the Egyptian and Sumerian calendars.
A larger number of calendar systems of the Ancient Near East becomes accessible in the Iron Age, based on the Babylonian calendar. This includes the calendar of the Persian Empire, which in turn gave rise to the Zoroastrian calendar as well as the Hebrew calendar.
A great number of Hellenic calendars develop in Classical Greece, and with the Hellenistic period also influence calendars outside of the immediate sphere of Greek influence, giving rise to the various Hindu calendars as well as to the ancient Roman calendar.
Calendars in antiquity were lunisolar, depending on the introduction of intercalary months to align the solar and the lunar years. This was mostly based on observation, but there may have been early attempts to model the pattern of intercalation algorithmically, as evidenced in the fragmentary 2nd-century Coligny calendar.
The Roman calendar was reformed by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. The Julian calendar was no longer dependent on the observation of the new moon but simply followed an algorithm of introducing a leap day every four years. This created a dissociation of the calendar month from the lunation.
The Islamic calendar is based on the prohibition of intercalation (nasi') by Muhammad, in Islamic tradition dated to a sermon held on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah AH 10 (Julian date: 6 March 632). This resulted in an observationally based lunar calendar shifting relative to the seasons of the solar year.
The first calendar reform of the early modern era was the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582 based on the observation of a long-term shift between the Julian calendar and the solar year.
There have been a number of modern proposals for reform of the calendar, such as the World Calendar, International Fixed Calendar, Holocene calendar, and, recently, the Hanke-Henry Permanent Calendar. Such ideas are mooted from time to time but fail to gain traction because of the loss of continuity, massive upheaval in implementation and religious objections.

But research work done by people like Cyril Hromnik, Richard Wade, Johan Heine and a handful of others over the past twenty years, into ancient southern African history, has revealed that these stone structures are in fact more than just cattle kraal, but the remains of ancient temples and astronomical observatories of lost ancient civilizations that stretch back for thousands of years.
The discovery of the ancient stone calendar site by Johan Heine (Adam’s Calendar) in among all these stone dwellings and temples, would suggest that some of the structures would date back to the same era as the calendar some 75,000 years ago.
