Thunderstorms coming on Saturday

Isolated severe thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts and widespread rain will hit south east Queensland on Saturday.

Weatherzone meteorologist Graeme Brittain said a low pressure trough crossing the bottom of the state was the cause behind the expected stormy weather.

"Some of the thunderstorms are likely to be severe with damaging gusts in places but these are going to be quite isolated," he said.

"It is mainly the widespread showers that are going to feature of the one passing over."

The thunderstorms were expected to hang around well into Saturday evening and were likely to be focused just south of Brisbane.

In thunderstorm areas, residents could expect rainfall of up to 20mm and wind gusts of more than 20 kilometres an hour.

Mr Brittain said there would be some relief as conditions looked set to clear by Sunday.

"There will be a high pressure ridge building in from the west that is going to cool things down in time for Sunday," he said.

"Sunday is looking a lot more drier and a lot more settled."
