Paradise Lost are a doom metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, England and are considered by some to be one of the pioneers of the doom metal genre and of the gothic metal genre. Paradise Lost has proven to be an influential band, with Jonas Renkse of Katatonia saying that his band started off "as Paradise Lost fanboys".
Their line-up has remained stable for such a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson. Holmes and Mackintosh are the principal composers, with almost all of the band's songs credited to them. During the years, the band has only changed drummers.
After their formation in 1988, Paradise Lost released three cassette demos, Paradise Lost, Frozen Illusion, and Plains of Desolation, before being signed to Peaceville Records in 1989. They recorded their debut album, Lost Paradise, at Academy Music Studio in December of that year. The album was released in February 1990.
Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton (1608–1674). The first version, published in 1667, consisted of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse. A second edition followed in 1674, arranged into twelve books (in the manner of Virgil's Aeneid) with minor revisions throughout and a note on the versification. It is considered by critics to be Milton's major work, and it helped solidify his reputation as one of the greatest English poets of his time.
The poem concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men".
The poem is separated into twelve "books" or sections, the lengths of which vary greatly (the longest is Book IX, with 1,189 lines, and the shortest Book VII, with 640). The Arguments at the head of each book were added in subsequent imprints of the first edition. Originally published in ten books, a fully "Revised and Augmented" edition reorganized into twelve books was issued in 1674, and this is the edition generally used today.
Paradise (Persian: پردیس, Paradise garden) is the term for a place of timeless harmony. The Abrahamic faiths associate paradise with the Garden of Eden, that is, the perfect state of the world prior to the fall from grace, and the perfect state that will be restored in the World to Come.
Paradisaical notions are cross-cultural, often laden with pastoral imagery, and may be cosmogonical or eschatological or both, often compared to the miseries of human civilization: in paradise there is only peace, prosperity, and happiness. Paradise is a place of contentment, a land of luxury and idleness. Paradise is often described as a "higher place", the holiest place, in contrast to this world, or underworlds such as Hell. In eschatological contexts, paradise is imagined as an abode of the virtuous dead. In Christian and Islamic understanding, Heaven is a paradisaical relief. In old Egyptian beliefs, the otherworld is Aaru, the reed-fields of ideal hunting and fishing grounds where the dead lived after judgment. For the Celts, it was the Fortunate Isle of Mag Mell. For the classical Greeks, the Elysian fields was a paradisaical land of plenty where the heroic and righteous dead hoped to spend eternity. The Vedic Indians held that the physical body was destroyed by fire but recreated and reunited in the Third Heaven in a state of bliss. In the Zoroastrian Avesta, the "Best Existence" and the "House of Song" are places of the righteous dead. On the other hand, in cosmological contexts 'paradise' describes the world before it was tainted by evil.

Draconian Times is the fifth studio album released by British metal act Paradise Lost. Two tracks from the album, "The Last Time" (8 May 1995) and "Forever Failure" (25 Sept 1995) were released as singles, music videos and both charted.
This album was played in its entirety on the band's live album Draconian Times MMXI. This album was released with Shades of God & Icon in a boxed set called Original Album Classics. A song called "Another Desire", was written during this album's recording, but it was not released on this album nor the reissues. Instead, it was only released on the Forever Failure single. This is the only Paradise Lost album where members of the band other than MacKintosh & Holmes have received some writing credits.

"Embers Fire" is the first song of the fourth studio album "Icon" by British gothic metal band (Paradise Lost) released on September 1993. A fallen time that's bygone A crude elite that's from a distant zone You turn a blind eye on what's 'brave' You don't know if it's the truth you told Anger looks on the quiet dreaming Seals the sense incandescent ones Hold back desire for danger A bet you lose, you'll have no way to turn I see the man who lives and breathes corruption Into a circle that you call you own Don't run away, from the pain, a claim that you deal with A power game, from within, impossible for you to see this Laid down the laws of deceit The ones who cherish are the ones who'll go Into the ashes of a tortured world Only in mind's eye can you see a l...

The core Paradise Lost songwriters Nick Holmes and Greg Mackintosh travel back 20 years to remember their critically acclaimed One Second album. They discuss the start of their great experimentation era in great detail. The video is tinged with their trademark sarcastic humour. Ahead of next year's 30th anniversary, Paradise Lost, the genre-defining British doom metal band are set to release the 20th anniversary edition of their 1997 album ‘One Second' through Music For Nations on 14th July. Having continually proved themselves to be at the forefront of the UK rock and metal scene, ‘One Second' proved to be a turning point for the band, where they left behind their harder edge and began experimenting with electronics and keyboards taking on a more gothic direction. 20 years on f...
