A term limit is a legal restriction that limits the number of terms an officeholder may serve in a particular elected office. When term limits are found in presidential and semi-presidential systems they act as a method to curb the potential for monopoly, where a leader effectively becomes "president for life". Sometimes, there is an absolute limit on the number of terms an officeholder can serve, while, in other cases, the restrictions are merely on the number of consecutive terms.
Term limits have a long history. Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, two early civilizations which had elected offices, both imposed limits on some positions.
In ancient Athenian democracy, only offices selected by sortition were subjects to terms limits (one term of one year for each office, except members of the council of 500 (boule), where it was possible to serve two one-year terms, non-consecutively). Elected offices were all subject to possible re-election, although they were minoritarian, these positions were more prestigious and those requiring the most experience, such as military generals and the superintendent of springs.
Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician, author, and physician, who is a former Republican congressman, two-time Republican presidential candidate, and the presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party in the 1988 U.S. presidential election.
Paul served as the U.S. Representative for Texas' 14th and 22nd congressional districts. He represented the 22nd congressional district from 1976 to 1977 and from 1979 to 1985, and then represented the 14th congressional district, which included Galveston, from 1997 to 2013. On three occasions, he sought the presidency of the United States: as the Libertarian Party nominee in 1988 and as a candidate in the Republican primaries of 2008 and 2012. Paul is a critic of the federal government's fiscal policies, especially the existence of the Federal Reserve and the tax policy, as well as the military–industrial complex, and the War on Drugs. Paul has also been a vocal critic of mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act and the NSA surveillance programs. Paul was the first chairman of the conservative PAC Citizens for a Sound Economy and has been characterized as the "intellectual godfather" of the Tea Party movement.

The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.

Donald Trump: “But there’s another major announcement I’m going to make today as part of our pledge to drain the swamp. If I’m elected President I will push for a Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.” CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin attempted to criticize Donald Trump’s plan for term limits on members of Congress by incorrectly claiming that term limits already exist. Brooke Baldwin: “Correct me, there already are term limits, so what does he mean?” Dana Bash: “Right. Well there are term limits on the presidency, of course, and one of the big debates for some time has been whether or not, the fact that there are no term limits in Congress, whether that helps to breed corruption because it breeds a whole industry, which we see everyday, those of us who liv...

October 11, 2010 - Ron Paul, in this appearance on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, explains his long history of supporting term limits. He states that he was the first member of Congress to introduce term limit legislation. Then, when asked why he didn't term limit himself, says that term limits aren't that great. An interesting side note: At the end of the clip, Ron Paul seems to say that trying to change the Constitution isn't worth the trouble. That will probably be news to the people who support his campaign to repeal the 16th amendment. The full interview can be seen here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45755883/vp/39623961#39623961

In Africa, this year alone, leaders in Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo and Congo Republic have challenged term limits for heads of state.
