Today on our 2015 Ford F53 Chassis Motorhome we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Roadmaster Rear Anti-Sway Bar, part number 1139-144. Here we are with our manufacturer's suspension setup. As you can see, our motorhome's going to sway back and forth quite a bit, and the swaying motion's going to add fatigue to the driver trying to always keep your vehicle in a straight line. You can see as we're going, even on a straightaway here, we're getting a lot of side-to-side swaying motion, and that's causing a lot of feedback in our steering wheel from the swaying action in the rear of the motorhome. As we go back and forth now, you can see that our suspension has stiffened up a lot, and our vehicle's not swaying anywhere as near as much as it did before. It's going to give you a better feeling going down the highway. We'll begin by loosening up the four bolts that hold our four u-bolt nuts, and we're going to slide a plate up on there, and we're going to put our nuts back in place. We'll go ahead, and we're going to loosen these all up. These are going to be rather tight, so you're going to want to use a nice long breaker bar to get them loose.

Anti-roll bar
An anti-roll bar (anti-sway bar, sway bar, stabilizer bar) is a part of many automobile suspensions that helps reduce the body roll of a vehicle during fast cornering or over road irregularities. It connects opposite (left/right) wheels together through short lever arms linked by a torsion spring. A sway bar increases the suspension's roll stiffness—its resistance to roll in turns, independent of its spring rate in the vertical direction. The first stabilizer bar patent was awarded to Canadian inventor Stephen Coleman of Fredericton, New Brunswick on April 22, 1919.
Anti-roll bars were unusual on pre-war cars due to the generally much stiffer suspension and acceptance of body roll. From the 1950s, production cars were more commonly fitted with anti-roll bars, especially those with softer coil spring suspension.
Purpose and operation
An anti-sway or anti-roll bar is intended to force each side of the vehicle to lower, or rise, to similar heights, to reduce the sideways tilting (roll) of the vehicle on curves, sharp corners, or large bumps. With the bar removed, a vehicle's wheels can tilt away by much larger distances (as shown by the SUV image at right). Although there are many variations in design, a common function is to force the opposite wheel's shock absorber, spring or suspension rod to lower, or rise, to a similar level as the other wheel. In a fast turn, a vehicle tends to drop closer onto the outer wheels, and the sway bar soon forces the opposite wheel to also get closer to the vehicle. As a result, the vehicle tends to "hug" the road closer in a fast turn, where all wheels are closer to the body. After the fast turn, then the downward pressure is reduced, and the paired wheels can return to their normal height against the vehicle, kept at similar levels by the connecting sway bar.

Today on our 2015 Ford F53 Chassis Motorhome we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Roadmaster Rear Anti-Sway Bar, part number 1139-144. Here we are with our manufacturer's suspension setup. As you can see, our motorhome's going to sway back and forth quite a bit, and the swaying motion's going to add fatigue to the driver trying to always keep your vehicle in a straight line. You can see as we're going, even on a straightaway here, we're getting a lot of side-to-side swaying motion, and that's causing a lot of feedback in our steering wheel from the swaying action in the rear of the motorhome. As we go back and forth now, you can see that our suspension has stiffened up a lot, and our vehicle's not swaying anywhere as near as much as it did before. It's going to give you a better feeling going down the highway. We'll begin by loosening up the four bolts that hold our four u-bolt nuts, and we're going to slide a plate up on there, and we're going to put our nuts back in place. We'll go ahead, and we're going to loosen these all up. These are going to be rather tight, so you're going to want to use a nice long breaker bar to get them loose.

1995 Ford Crown Victoria Partial Front Suspension Rebuild and Brake Swap
As the last major job needing to be done on this 1995 Ford Crown Victoria, both upper and lower ball joints are replaced along with the anti-sway bar end links. These were "lube for life" parts that could not be lubricated during routine maintenance, so they eventually failed. They were so bad in fact, that the car was dangerous to drive since there was a very real possibility that the left ball joint may have eventually separated from its socket given a hard enough bump. I chose to replace all parts with Moog replacement parts and for the most part, they appear to be a high quality part. Even more so than the original Motorcraft part. The only issue I have with them involves the sway bar end link's lack of a means with which to stop the ball stud from rotating when tightening the nut. Ot... -

As the last major job needing to be done on this 1995 Ford Crown Victoria, both upper and lower ball joints are replaced along with the anti-sway bar end links. These were "lube for life" parts that could not be lubricated during routine maintenance, so they eventually failed. They were so bad in fact, that the car was dangerous to drive since there was a very real possibility that the left ball joint may have eventually separated from its socket given a hard enough bump.
I chose to replace all parts with Moog replacement parts and for the most part, they appear to be a high quality part. Even more so than the original Motorcraft part. The only issue I have with them involves the sway bar end link's lack of a means with which to stop the ball stud from rotating when tightening the nut. Other than that, these appear to be great parts.
Lastly, the brake rotors, calipers, pads, and caliper adapters were swapped between the wrecked car and the white car. So with the exception of the front wheel hubs, all drive train parts have been either swapped or replaced to get this car back on the road. Now all that remains is to get a front end alignment and state inspection. At that point, this car can become a contributing member of the fleet. (11/30/2013)
