"
Everybody's going to have a giggle at our expense, and I think given the nature of politics recently, maybe that's not too bad a thing. I think the real issue is this - are the serious politicians like
Liam Fox and
David Davis who are people with substantial political background and record, are they going to be playing second fiddle to someone like
Boris Johnson who has no substantial track record whatsoever. So it's a lot how she (
Theresa May) determines this. Has she just got Boris Johnson to give everybody a laugh, or is she going to let him, I don't know, give away the
Channel Islands by mistake in negotiations or something like that."

"A lot will determine who wins out - the court jester (eds note: referencing
Johnson), the boss (May) and the serious politician (newly appointed Brexit
Secretary David Davis). We're getting, as some people say, we've gone from
Shakespearian tragedy in the
Palace of Westminster to an
Ealing comedy."

GREEN PARTY MEMBER OF THE
HOUSE OF LORDS, JENNY JONES, SAYING:
"
I am absolutely staggered and I think anybody who knows Boris Johnson even just a little is just bewildered by the fact he now has one of the senior positions in the government. I know him a little bit from the
London Assembly and he has huge charm and that could be very valuable in that post, but at the same time he's got quite a short fuse. He threatened to throw me out of his office once because I was talking to him about cycling and being a little bit too pushy on it. But my biggest problem with
Boris is he is a climate change-sceptic and I think that's going to be a disaster in that post when you're talking to a lot of different countries who all do accept that climate change is a problem, and want to do something about it."
