Mary Woronov (born December 8, 1943) is an American actress, published author and figurative painter. She is primarily known as a "cult star" because of her work with Andy Warhol and her roles in Roger Corman's cult films. Woronov has appeared in over 80 movies, on stage at Lincoln Center and off-Broadway productions, as well as numerous appearances in mainstream American TV series, such as Charlie's Angels and Knight Rider. She frequently co-starred with friend Paul Bartel; the pair appeared in 17 films together, often as husband-and-wife.
Woronov was born to Carol Eschholz in the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, in the period when it served as the Ream General Hospital during World War II. Her adoptive father, Victor D. Woronov (1907-1975), was a cancer surgeon in Brooklyn. She attended Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights.
She first made headlines in the early 1960s as a Warhol superstar. She danced with Exploding Plastic Inevitable, Warhol's multimedia presentation of the Velvet Underground. She played Hanoi Hannah in Chelsea Girls, the 1966 experimental underground film directed by Andy Warhol. The film was Warhol's first major commercial success after a long line of avant-garde art films (both feature-length and short). Of this time she has said,
Andy Warhol (/ˈwɔːrhɒl/; born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
Warhol's art used many types of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He was also a pioneer in computer-generated art using Amiga computers that were introduced in 1984, two years before his death. He founded Interview magazine and was the author of numerous books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties. He managed and produced The Velvet Underground, a rock band which had a strong influence on the evolution of punk rock music. He is also notable as a gay man who lived openly as such before the gay liberation movement. His studio, The Factory, was a well known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons.
Former Factory Girl and cult film star Mary Woronov recalls her time working with Andy Warhol, dancing with the Velvet Underground and escaping from a stalker drag Queen. Woronov also discusses her memoir Swimming Underground: My Years in the Warhol Factory, working with Oliver Stone, bad trips with heroin and what life is like living in artists compounds in this episode of Talk Show hosted by Harper Simon. When a Paul enters his apartment to find Mary fighting off a swinger who has gotten into the wrong apartement (and thinks that Mary is just playing hard to get) he hits the man with a frying pan, killing him. Their dreams of running a small resturant seem to be in jeopardy until they decide to dispose of the body, keep the wallet, and to advertise for other sexually oriented visitors who are summarily killed, bagged, robbed and disposed of. This goes along quite well until one night a burglar named Raoul breaks in and cuts himself in for a piece of the action. - Written by John Vogel Directed by Paul Bartel Cast: Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov, Robert Beltran, Susan Saiger, Lynn Hobart, Richard Paul

Between 1964 to 1966, Andy Warhol shot over 500 silent, slow-motion films on 16mm black-and-white portraits depicting the lives of popular individuals who frequented the factory, including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Rufus Collins, Edie Sedgwick, Allen Ginsberg and Nico. Warhol’s films were motivated by his fascination with individuals and his desire to capture the actual experience of living. Mary Woronov is an American actress, and is known as a "cult star" because of the work she did with Andy Warhol. Seemingly, Woronov was one of Warhol's favorite superstars, as he features her in Chelsea Girls and as a whip-dancer during Velvet Underground shows. With light only shedding on half of her face, she remains calm and stern as she stares into the camera, until the very end, where she sheds a slig...
