Most palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia on land that was once thriving rainforest. As global demand grows, more and more forests are being cleared. In areas such as Borneo and Sumatra, rich in biodiversity, deforestation can be catastrophic. Endangered species including orang-utans, tigers, elephants and rhinos are losing critical habitats, pushing them toward extinction.
In 2004, WWF helped set up the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a group that includes every link in the global supply chain, from growers and processors, to food companies and retailers and investors.
With the RSPO, WWF developed a set of international standards for responsible palm oil production. Producers that show they meet these criteria are able to sell certified sustainable palm oil. That means companies that use it in their lipstick, soap, margarine or whatever else can make the same guarantee to their customers.
Certified sustainable palm oil cannot be grown in place of primary forest or in important conservation areas. Growers have to use the best growing practices to keep soil and water supplies healthy, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. They also need to pay a decent wage and respect the rights of workers and communities.
The first certified sustainable palm oil came on to the market in September 2008. Today, about 6.4% of all palm oil is certified sustainable.
By looking out for CSPO, the label for sustainable palm oill, you'll be able to buy these products safe in the knowledge that you're not contributing to the destruction of the rainforests.

What do lipstick, ice cream and orangutan-suited activists have in common?
Palm-oil.
This cheap and versatile material is in about half the stuff on the world's supermarket shelves. Close to sixty million tonnes of it are consumed each year, and demand is growing fast.
But the palm-oil industry has a bad reputation. Over the last three decades, growers have cut down huge swathes of South-East Asia’s tropical forests and drained valuable peatlands to make room for new plantations.
That has contributed to climate change, destroyed the habitats of endangered species and driven indigenous people from their lands.
In 2004 some growers, traders and buyers introduced a certification scheme to reward firms who cleaned up their act. Critics have said the standards are too meek. But sales of certified palm oil have doubled in the past three years; it now makes up one-fifth of all supply.
Lately many big firms have made new commitments beyond what the certification requires. This is in large part due to environmental campaigners, who have urged Western consumers not to buy well-known products from companies such as Unilever and Nestlé unless the firms can prove that all the palm oil they use is sourced sustainably, or soon will be.
A few of these companies have therefore asked scientists to produce a clear definition of what palm growers should do to expand the industry without further frying the planet. The researchers' draft recommendations, published in June, rule out the use of all virgin forests, most forests that have been only partially-cleared, and so-called 'secondary' forests—those that have been cleared but allowed to grow back for 20 years.
While big producers with Western buyers could adopt the measures, smaller ones with lots of Asian clients may not—and those make up over half the industry. Governments may be forced to incorporate the recommendations into national law. If that happens, palm oil could finally shift its reputation and become a model for sustainable agriculture.

KETAPANG, BORNEO, INDONESIA — After being rescued as orphans, two young female orangutans, Butan and Marsela, have been released back into the wild.
Marsela was rescued from a palm oil plantation in Ketapang, a city located on the Island of Borneo in Indonesia. Butan’s fate was much the same, as she was found motherless, alone, and dying from malaria in 2011.
Once residents of the lush Indonesian jungles, the branches and vines they swang on are no more. The forested areas they lived in have been wracked by logging, deforestation and destruction at the hands of man, to make way for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is the cheapest, most tropical vegetable oil on the planet.
The product used in a variety of everyday items on our grocery lists, from candies and baked goods to shampoo, cosmetics, detergents, cleaning agents and even toothpaste. With demand rising and Indonesia set to double its annual palm oil production from 20 million tonnes in 2009 to 40 million tonnes by 2020, Butan and Marsela’s story is devastatingly common.
Last week, the IUCN reclassified the status of the Bornean orangutan from endangered to a critically endangered species. Some estimates project that at current rates, orangutans in the wild could be wiped out within 5-10 years.
After about five years of attending “forest school” and learning survival skills that would allow them to take care of themselves on their own, Butan and Marsela were set to be released back into the jungle by conservation group International Animal Rescue.
The young orangutans were accompanied by a 25-year-old male orangutan, Sabtu, who was rescued earlier this year after wandering into a village after his home was also destroyed.
On June 28, after four days of traveling to Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, once his cage door opened, Sabtu bolted out of his cage and up into the trees. A day later, the once-orphaned Butan and Marsela did the same.

This film is one of a series of eight that showcases the extent that conservation-related research is embedded in a wide range of academic fields and involves collaboration with non-academic partners beyond the University. The films are produced by the University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute (UCCRI), which was established in October 2013 to foster a cross-disciplinary approach within the University of Cambridge.

Governments may be forced to incorporate the recommendations into national law. If that happens, palm oil could finally shift its reputation and become a model for sustainable agriculture.

KETAPANG, BORNEO, INDONESIA — After being rescued as orphans, two young female orangutans, Butan and Marsela, have been released back into the wild.
Marsela was rescued from a palm oil plantation in Ketapang, a city located on the Island of Borneo in Indonesia. Butan’s fate was much the same, as she was found motherless, alone, and dying from malaria in 2011.
Once residents of the lush Indonesian jungles, the branches and vines they swang on are no more. The forested areas they lived in have been wracked by logging, deforestation and destruction at the hands of man, to make way for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is the cheapest, most tropical vegetable oil on the planet.
The product used in a variety of everyday items on our grocery lists, from candies and baked goods to shampoo, cosmetics, detergents, cleaning agents and even toothpaste. With demand rising and Indonesia set to double its annual palm oil production from 20 million tonnes in 2009 to 40 million tonnes by 2020, Butan and Marsela’s story is devastatingly common.
Last week, the IUCN reclassified the status of the Bornean orangutan from endangered to a critically endangered species. Some estimates project that at current rates, orangutans in the wild could be wiped out within 5-10 years.
After about five years of attending “forest school” and learning survival skills that would allow them to take care of themselves on their own, Butan and Marsela were set to be released back into the jungle by conservation group International Animal Rescue.
The young orangutans were accompanied by a 25-year-old male orangutan, Sabtu, who was rescued earlier this year after wandering into a village after his home was also destroyed.
On June 28, after four days of traveling to Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park, once his cage door opened, Sabtu bolted out of his cage and up into the trees. A day later, the once-orphaned Butan and Marsela did the same.
